I might have started your info with the fact that she wrote it when she was 11 years old. Another aspect of an Aurora performance is the relationship between the music and her body movements. See her performance at the Nobel Peace Prize Awards 2015.

her niedarosdomen concert has heavy harpist (ruth potter) engagement. the whole concert is pure magic. thanks for reacting to aurora, she has so much more to offer. and she is better live. the best are her stripped back live pieces.

    • @DonHaka
      @DonHaka 2 місяці тому +1

I will heavily disagree with you with regards to her stripped down live versions being her best. That kind of disregards her talents regarding production. She is amazing live, but I think she shines the brightest in the studio, and I think it really shows in how far her albums have come with regards to sound design. Her first album is, underwhelming, compared to the rest of her work.

Love Aurora, gives me hope for today’s music. Loving the love she is getting in the comments as well. I second the live performances of her. The one concert held in a cathedral is really something to see. Also the one video where she seems to be singing with a Viking in a cave. Bigger Aurora fans than me would be able to tell you more.

I really enjoyed your analysis and reaction to this song. Some facts about Aurora that might interest you and add further insight to this piece:
She wrote this song when she was 11 years old.
She taught herself to play piano on an old electric piano she found in their attic when she was 6 years old - the ON button was broken so she had to hold it down with one hand while playing with the other.
The music she grew up with as a child was mostly classical as well as Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and Enya.
She spent a lot of time in the woods as a child so nature is a major theme in much of her music.
She is also an accomplished dancer and artist.
She is a great storyteller - her lyrics are always thought provoking. Runaway is one of her earliest songs - I believe she was around 19 years old when it was released. She is now 28 years old and her music has become more complex as she matures and been influenced by other music - however, she remains totally unique.
As others have commented she is best experienced live - her stage presence is mesmerizing.
I would recommend you watch her live performance of her song "Winter Bird" at the Nidarosdomen Cathedral in Norway. There is a male choir and orchestra - including Organ and Harp!
She has so many lovely interesting pieces, so I hope you have a chance to look further into her music.

AURORA is a genre of herself, usually very hard to put in a box. And lately she has been defying & crossing genre borders even more. You'll be hard pressed to find a more varied and original artist. Soundpainting is a good way to describe her method, and she is very good at painting a picture in your mind and drawing you in. Especially live. And this dynamic Ebb and Flow feeling of her music is maybe the only way of describing it, if that wasn't already taken for defining speed only it could have been the name of the genre.

  • @BrimirMe
    @BrimirMe 6 місяців тому +5

13:05 This whole comparison makes sense. Aurora started writing this when she was 11, about events and sensations that had transpired earlier (a godfather passing and she mentions dreaming about being 7). So it very much involves a young girls perspective and Aurora has also said that home to her was her mother's embrace. On the other hand she has also described the song itself as a gift to herself from "little Aurora", as she herself feel she has understood more and more what it's about as she grow older.

LOve your reaction to this Aurora song. You are spot on about mother daughter relation here. She has said that when she wrote it, home was in her mother's arms. The people she chooses to form her band has changed over the years but all of them are superb musicians and with great voices, ref her acapella version of 'Trough the eyes of a child' with her and 4 more voices, for VEVO. If you do that one, you should double it with the same song from her Nidarosdomen Cathedral concert where she ads a male choir, church organ, harp and violins, the whole concert is beautiful and top notch produced.
Also you should know that all her songs are different from each other in style, tempo, construction, and they can be found in several versions - acapella, acoustic, electronic and some even with a full philharmonic orchestra. Also, every time she sing a song it differs from the last time she did it. Lastly - she has done a number of superb covers, in her own version - Life on Mars is my favorite - ua-cam.com/video/kJ095S0MmnA/v-deo.htmlsi=CFTMX_QefyFuY5YV.

Billy Eilish, the huge pop star, has said that seeing and hearing AURORA sing this song inspired her to try to record her own music. So, one could say that she originated this breathy style in contemporary anglophone pop music. [Of course, it was popular among French singers for decades before.] Her most recent album, ‘What Happened to the Heart’ shows her incredible growth as a songwriter and singer. I agree that her live performances are even more impressive, especially those recorded at VEVO. ‘A Soul With No King’ is a great example of her recent work.

Runaway was released in Feb 2015 and the music video on Feb 27th, 2015, and just 5 days later Katy Perry tweeted and recommended the music video and Aurora: "Finally. New music that makes my heart flutter. Check this 17 yr old angel." (Aurora was actually 18). She later went to 2 Aurora concerts in the US i 2015 and 2016.
Billie Eilish has said many times that she watched the Runaway music video in 2015 when she was 13, and that it really inspired her a lot to pursue her music career.
In March 2021 when the song was 6 years old, it was used in a TikTok meme and it got really popular and reached top 20 world wide on Spotify.
You should watch Aurora live, I recommend watching this song privately (or reaction video if you want) at the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize Concert, and you will see what we mean.
Aurora turned 28 in June and also released her 4th album in June, and she also has 2 EPs. She writes all her music and lyrics, though sometimes with co-writers.

If you're the the kind of music listener that really admires artists who not only can write and record unique songs but also perform them at an extremely high level, this is an artist you'd be foolish not to devote some time to. It's a great rabbit hole to go down....

Aurora is a remarkable young artist, glad you listened to her. I hope you will watch a video of her performing live, Murder Song or It Happened Quiet would be great picks.

Thank you for reacting to Aurora! To fully get her in my opinion it is necessary to watch her while singing because she is able to transport emotions through her body language and facial expressions as well as through her voice. She tells stories with all of them. She is a very special artist. I recommend "All Is Soft Inside" live at KEXP, "Lucky" live at Nidarosdomen and "It Happened Quiet" live at the Current.

So glad Vlad has put forward Aurora. So refreshing. There is a lot of talent coming out of Scandinavia now, though not that well known outside of Europe. You both really must have a listen to her compatriot Susanne Sundfor - and her superb albums 'Songs For People in Trouble' and '10 Love Songs'. She has excellent vocal control and an amazing range of abilities including producing as well as writing her own recordings. I discovered her through her Oya concert on YT and her work as a vocalist with Royksopp.

Susanne Sundfør is absolutely amazing. It seems she can handle anything. She's probably the greatest musician to come out of Norway in a very long time.

@@TWBK Glad you agree. However I've repeatedly mentioned her name to the best reactors including Amy , the Charismatic Voice and Doug Helvering and so far they haven't featured her. Probably because I'm not on their patreons and they tend to play a lot of metal and hard rock.

Very good analysis of this song that revealed the artist. But AURORA is above all a stage artist where she can reveal all her talents: not only her unique voice, but also her dancing skills, her sensitivity on edge, her different spirit (she talks a lot between songs) and also her way of singing since she does not stay in place in front of her microphone but moves all the time by trotting while dancing and she never stops moving her arms too and her gaze seems to see what she describes in her lyrics. This song "Runaway" was written when she was 11 years old. Before and especially after she wrote other songs but especially for her audience, often the lyrics are committed for example about global warming.
I advise you to listen and comment:
"Through The Eyes Of a Child" (Live at Nidarosdomen) when she totally frees her voice
"A Soul With No King" (Live Performance) | Vevo song written with Brian Eno on his latest album.

Please watch her perform this song and Murder Song at the Nobel Peace Prize.
Watching her sing these songs and how lost she is in them is something to behold.
Also watch her perform at Nidarosdomen, specifically her song "Through the Eyes of a Child".
I will never be the same again, in a good way.

Followed AURORA (no, I'm not shouting, it's how she wants her name credited!) since 2017. She's unique. She reminds me of Elizabeth Fraser from The Cocteau Twins. Not only that, but she wrote this song and its arrangement at age 11. Yes, 11. She writes all her material and directs her own videos in collaboration with a long-time friend. Her sister makes all her outfits for the videos. She's a classically trained dancer as well.
She's a national treasure in Norway. My favourite AURORA songs are Black Water Lilies, I Went Too Far, The M*rder Song, Runaway and Queendom. YT has a few live concerts of hers. One was held in a Norwegian forest mid-winter with lanterns and Reindeer, just magical. Another was in a Cathedral with a choir. There are also a few Capella songs too. Watch them as she's mesmerising, quirky and unique. She totally immerses herself in the lyrics and music, unaware of the audience in front of her. It's just her and the music at that particular point in time.

Thank you for reacting to Aurora. Perhaps you'd be interested in something from her newly released album to hear how she has changed the way she uses her voice compared to the early days of Runaway? I know you generally listen rather than watch for your reactions but Aurora really is a visual artist, may I suggest:

As many other comments points out, Aurora's body language is really huge part of her performances... for some reason (or obvious reasons : ) she reminds me a lot from Björk during her early solo career years.. Aurora's latest album "What Happened to the Heart?" is clearly beginning of new arch in her career, she truly is true artists of our time.

Off topic. I believe watching the performance of Gojira at the 2024 Olympics would be great. Their set is a great example of Heavy Metal character. It's bombastic, has historical context, and an operatic breakdown.
