    Watching this performance of the defence I saw Geordie as an 80 year old man singing this song for an audience for the last time and got sad. Idk why I thought it was so beautiful

    I do not understand the appeal of this. The chord progressions go nowhere, the rhythm never finds a pocket, the talk/singing with a weird accent is just excruciating, the leads sound like someone pretending to play jazz, and the melodies are torturously meandering.

    • @worms8759
      @worms8759 5 місяців тому +7

      me when i approach music at a surface level
      listen to the defence or the magician and come back and tell me if the chords go nowhere. You can have your opinion on how he sings but the musicality is insane. anyone with above a highschool level of music theory knowledge can tell that the chords do in fact go somewhere. Might there be dissonance? absolutely, but so does berlioz's symphony fantasique, or Brahms first symphony. even Beethoven's eroica.
      you dont have to like it, but please dont undermine the thought that goes behind this stuff

    • @tedscanlon4666
      @tedscanlon4666 5 місяців тому +1

      @@worms8759 I’m in fact well educated in chord theory. Give me some specifics as to what is going on here, chord-wise, that is impressive.

    • @worms8759
      @worms8759 5 місяців тому

      @@tedscanlon4666 to tackle the defence, you said the music (in general) goes nowhere in its chords. This is just a flat out lie. The central note / key of this song is C, a pretty average key, and the central chords is C, F, G; or the I, IV, V. This is the basic building blocks of most music, pop, classical, jazz.
      Almost ever phrase starts on the I, finds its way to the IV, and ends on the V. So the claim it has no direction and goes nowhere is flat out true, as it follows the principle rules of direction in music theory.
      What happens between the I, IV, and V is where the real magic happens, it utilizes mode mixture (Major III chord), secondary dominants (E to A minor, or V/vi) which follows proper direction suggestions. It may sounds weird but that’s because of the instrumentation, rhythm, and mood. This is just one song with many others like it that branch out to their own wildness

      Let me just offer some context, I was there. This was greep’s first ever solo set, especially to do it acoustic in a small room which was SUPER hot, he even said please have a kind heart, he was nervous. Listen to the live stuff he has done with his new sound band at most of the shows he has done post black midi, have been so good. And if that’s not enough, just listen to his work in black midi. This isn’t his best performance of course, but cut him some slack lol.
