      Thanks Robert! Yeah, I'm pretty excited to try some new ideas out with it. I'm hoping that it will spur some ideas for others too, so many possibilities =D

    That's pretty cool Zac. This opens the door for the hobbyist to a whole new world of blank making. You can now make blanks that you could only buy before, like the one you used for the video - which turned out awesome! Thanks for sharing.

      Thanks Keith! I have a few ideas brewing in my brain, just need to figure out how to get them out of my brain and into the 3D modeling software. I'm finding that to be the toughest challenge

    Great idea, Zac. Not into pens yet but have everything I need for two months but so busy with mill orders I don't have time. Nobody wants all wood mills anymore. I think this winter I'll be started.
    Cheers, Lee

    Nice Zac, I am more of a Cincinnati Reds fan but I still really like the blank and the idea, I have seen pen blanks with 3D printed honeycomb, I think those look cool, I immediately thought of this video when I saw those
    Happy turning

    Cool I love working with 3-D printing however saying that after I do the 3-D printing I make mould out of silicone. This way I don't have to reprint my project again.It saves you time and money, and I can use any colour I want. As usual you do great amazing work. Cheers .

    That is a great pen! Now can you do that on a bowl(using multiple pinstripes around the outer edges)?

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  7 років тому

      Thanks Rex! Yeah, you could do that with a bowl too. Just a matter of modeling it and printing it out. Or you could just arrange some plastic strips around a bowl too

    What filament did you use, I wonder if their are any filaments that alumilite won’t stick to? If so it would be awesome to make mold out of. For example like a honeycomb mold to make gitd honeycomb to recast in resin.

  • @alexkrause5550

    Awesome video Zac!!! Have you tried annealing 3d printed parts yet? You can increase their strength and layer adhesions along with increasing there resistance to heat deformation

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  7 років тому

      Thanks Alex! No I haven't done the heat treating. It's not really necessary with ABS, that's more of a PLA issue I think.

  • @kevinhart1555
    @kevinhart1555 6 років тому

    You could do a consistent honeycomb so the pattern is the same all the way around. Great blank!

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  6 років тому

      Thanks Kevin =D Not a bad idea with the consistent honeycomb, I'll have to try that out

    I like the pen you just made what type of 3-D printer are you using

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  7 років тому

      Thanks Robert! It's a Cubicon Single printer, works pretty well. It's pretty much ready to go out of the box, I have a video that shows the unboxing of it if you're interested: ua-cam.com/video/gWZsb8yg_f4/v-deo.html

    Nice looking product. How did you manage to find the exact center of the 3d object to keep the lines symmetrical? JimE

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  7 років тому

      Thanks Jim! I haven't found that it needs to be centered perfectly. The blanks are pretty close as is

    • @chartle1
      @chartle1 7 років тому

      So you just drilled it like any other blank? Seems like you could "Print" the hole in the middle 27/64 for say a sierra and then plug the holes before casting.
      You could even add the plugs into the print and when you trimmed the edges, cut away the plugs. You now have a perfectly centered hole.

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  7 років тому

      Yeah, you could do that. Leaving it solid, you can just drill it out and choose any kit you like though

  • @joespina308
    @joespina308 6 років тому

    How do you drill the hole for the tube?

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  6 років тому

      I drill on the lathe. You could do it on the drill press too. Either way you have to be careful how tight you clamp it. Too tight, and it can crack the blank

    Zac: What kind of filament did you use on the 3d printed part?

    • @ZacHiggins

      Hey Rich, I use ABS, but I've tried PLA, PETG, and a couple others too. They all worked pretty well

    Go the Cubs! Well I actually live in Australia so I really don’t give a damn. But I do like watching it Professor! Good vid Zac, the pen came up a treat. Cheers, Sean. Well shit I literally just dropped my iPad fell over and dropped my knee through the screen, and yet it is still working in 735 parts... nothing throw away these days, just ask the Japanese! LOL

    • @ZacHiggins

    • @sjscreations2608
      @sjscreations2608 6 років тому

      Zac Higgins No the iPad is history, my knee still works just need to add more lubricant. Just a silly question mate, when you first started in front of the camera did you umm and aghh a bit, and the video didn’t flow as well? Or is that just me? Keep those great vid’s going mate. Cheers

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  6 років тому

      Thanks John, I appreciate the kind words. More videos in the cue =D I have gotten better in front of the camera compared to when I first started, but I'm still not that great at spitting out what I want to say. I usually have to redo it a few times before I get it right. It's much better to plan ahead and write out what you want to say or at least outline it. I'm usually pressed for time and just wing it most of the time though. Sorry to hear the iPad didn't pull through, but I'm glad to hear the knee is ok at least

  • @fsbell1

    So, finishing...does the PLA need to be sealed with CA?

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  6 років тому

      I used ABS for mine, but I think PLA is the same, just polished it up as I would the rest of the blank. You might get a more even shine across both materials with CA if the PLA/ABS seems more dull than the resin

    Zac, how hard would it be for you to make a 3D printed red flag stripe object & how much would it cost ? Thanks, Jim

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  6 років тому +1

      Hey Jim, I really don't use the 3D printer much, so I wouldn't even try to tackle it. Just not enough time to devote to learning the ins and outs of both the printer and design software. You might see if Chad Schimmel could do it, I think he might have picked up a printer now

    • @TheSafecrkr1

      Zac Higgins Thanks Zac. As always, good advice.

  • @pugwallbelfast

    You could also make a mold of the 3d print and then make resin versions of the 3d print. You would have to be a bit careful though on how you design the print, for example the one you did had a hole in the centre but in a silicon mold with no support that may create problems however if it was solid then it would be better not only for stability but making a bigger space to pour the resin and thus making it easier for the air to escape.

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  7 років тому

      I made an R2-D2 mold that way, 3D printing works great for making masters to cast =D

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  7 років тому

      You could just make a mold of the 3D print too, save a step, or just cast the 3D print in resin ;)
