I love this one…It has such a catchy melody and I love the lyrics! Amazing analysis, as always! When I think about “your chosen family” I kinda think she’s talking about the family one chooses to be with, as as opposed to the family one is born into.
I remember when I first heard this and not WATCHING the lyric video and thinking she sang, "roaring 20's, tossing panties in the pool". I was like, well, this is a hell of a song to start the album!

This album was released at the same time when my previous relationship ended because of a stupid fight and the line "If one thing had been different would everything be different today?" tore me apart. This song will always destroy me.
Taylor is also speaking about regret, and not fully accepting the outcome of the failed relationship.

Have you reacted to hoax yet? It’s the song in between peace and the lakes on folklore and it is lyrically chaotic and beautiful. Highly recommend.
Also - I actually wonder if maybe this was written about Joe, but before the permanent split, when pondering what things would be like if they were to split. “If one thing had been different”…she speaks about her concerns with being famous and how that may affect a relationship she’s in and the way she says “if you wanted me, you really should have shown” and those kinds of sentiments are expressed in “you’re losing me”…I also think it could have been inspired by Harry, too, because of the way she spoke about him not saying I love you back and the way people treated her because they were both famous, so I could see her wondering if maybe they would have worked out, had it not been for them being so famous and in the spotlight, or if there were issues with his mental health/substances, I imagine the “if one thing had been different” could apply to that, as well. There definitely seem to be themes that have been repeated in her relationships, which is really too bad, because she seems like such a kind and loyal person and she deserves someone who will give just as much back and commit to her.

I don't think she's talking about going along with family expectations or the wife he chose instead of her. I think she's using "chosen family" as in the people who are with you through thick and thin, the people who become your family without the ties of biology. To me, this is a wistful song about an ex who is living their best life and wishing that there had been a place for her in that life. I think the "if you never bleed you're never gonna grow" was more self-directed and philosophical. The breakup was painful, but it was a learning experience, and she's stronger for it.
