  • Ronald and Finn discuss generally disappointing results from recent solar battery testing at the Canberra Battery Test Centre. Are Australians forking out big bucks for batteries to essentially be unpaid beta testers? Watch this before you buy a home battery.
    Ronald's studied the very lengthy Centre reports so you don't have to - you can also read Ronald's detailed report summary here: www.solarquotes.com.au/blog/h...

    Iv'e had an off grid system for nearly 3 years now with 30kWh of BYD LV modules (the 2.5kWh modules) and an SMA Sunny Island and have to say the system has been rock solid, not a single trip out in all that time. Can't say I have noticed any degradation and charge my PHEV every day, pricey, but worth it (to me !).

    I couldn't agree more. When You read datasheet you may found that your battery at EOL will have 60% capacity. But you don't know after 5 years if the capacity is 61% or 99%!!!

    Thanks guys. I'm looking into battery storage to complement my solar install and articles like this are very helpful. My research has led me to an odd question that I wonder if someone here could answer.
    Does anyone know if AC coupled batteries such as the powerwall 2 work similarly to a PV string inverter where the output is set to a constant cos Phi of 1? My basic understanding is that means they generally produce real power and ignore the reactive component. Are they smarter than this?

    G'day Ron & Finn,
    I would be keen to learn of Enphase's new Encharge batteries that are designed specifically to work with their IQ8 microinveters, and their new ecosystem - Enphase Ensemble.
    Perhaps Solarquotes could investigate this system and dazzle us with brilliance on this new system.
    Finally, thanks for the chit chat review. As always, nicely laid back and uniquely Australian.
    Merry Christmas & happy New Year
    Cheers
    Peter

    Ive had a Tesla powerwall2 since August 2017 and it's worked perfectly. 13.5 hour grid outages dues to powerpole replacement and the powerwall2 worked perfect.
    Extremely pleased.

      When I had my Tesla Powerwall 2 installed, I had 8 people turn up, I'm guessing that I had one expert and the rest were learner installers. Compared to today that Powerwall 2 purchase and install was cheap, really cheap and totally through Tesla. Today I probably wouldn't buy one the cost is crazy now.
      It still working as good as gold. Hopefully I haven't jinxed it!

    Good question raised at 15:41. Does any know of a battery that clearly indicates/displays the current capacity of the battery? And is capacity mentioned in it's warranty?

      @@nateb3105 Finn said his car displays battery capacity. Also, the method you describe to measure capacity (which reads as sound to me) could be included in the battery management circuitry? So maybe possible if manufacturers include this extra hardware?

    I'm thinking of getting a Q Cells Q.Home package - the new Core H5 model with the 6.8kWh battery (apparently Samsung SDI-based). Probably too new for reviews on the particular model, but any feedback on the previous Q.Home batteries?

      You'd need a battery inverter like Deye three phase, and feed the power from the symo to store the excess energy .
      Other alternatives are 3 single phase inverters like Victron

    • @tirivaenim
      @tirivaenim 2 роки тому

      It’s unlikely one experiences problems at 5years, sometimes it’s at inception due to teething problems. The real test is how to know when the battery pack or even solar panels are reaching End Of Life so one can begin planning or investing in the next upgrade or replacement.

    • @jamesmotchman7913
      @jamesmotchman7913 2 роки тому +1

      My panels are 2nd hand and are 15 years old and still putting out about 90% of the manufacturer original spec, the batteries have had over 600 cycles with no drop in oerformance so far and expectations are they will be down to 80% after 3000 cycles. So I my need to add another battery at some point it's no big deal they are getting cheeper all the time.

    I’m still not convinced that home batteries are the way to go. The battery needs to do a lot of work. Most substations use 110v batteries that are only a ups supply and they are replaced every 10 to 15 years. They are also maintained by trained electricians and they live in a couple cool room. None of which exist in an Australian garage.
    The grid still needs some form of synchronous power.
    With any luck we’ll convert the mine voids into pumped hydro and use that as a “battery”
    As far as testing capacity of the battery you should be able to check its performance with a known load over a period time and check how long it lasts until it powers down and then compare that to the battery name plate. A torkel battery discharger would be able to accurately run this test.

    Batteries have problems (say some) and are no good.
    They are still comparatively new tech. New cars have had re-call issues for more than fifty years, yet we still use them. Same for TV's, building construction, aircraft, and the list goes on.
