I've had always felt like Tommy was just an ass to everybody. But over time I've realized he's just brutally honest and won't bullshit you. The more I watch, the more I respect him for his knowledge and the love of car culture. At the end of the day, he truly wants to help others and ensure they don't do something they will regret. Those historic HKS catalogs are a gold mine!

I really respect Tommy’s dedication to the hks builds will all the trinkets. While I won’t say it’s not feasible for the rest of us, it’s just harder for anyone else to do the same, and mixing brands just looks sloppy, like a bunch of random spot tattoos vs a sleeve. @@legros731 I won't say they are junk, but a lot of it is old tech at this point with a brand name and some lipstick. I rarely comment on videos but I think this is a video worth commenting on.
Talking with Tommy and just chilling was a good video. Then going to the roots of the car and explaining YA, everyone can do custom 1,000 hp cars, but is that what the car is really about ? Reminiscing back in highschool buying car magazines at the local grocery store and “building” my car over and over again. That’s what it was all about. Really, I miss that part of cars. Building for me, and not to appeal to the masses, or worrying about if I’m faster than the next guy.
Great video. Was good to see Tommy as himself.

I was stationed at Kadena AB, Okinawa and one of the civilians that we worked with had a huge collection of Nissan. Toyotas, Mazdas, etc. He had just about every iconic year and model in this massive warehouse. He drove every single one. A different car every day. He had an R33 GTR Nismo Edition with some special options. I believe it was #1 of 2 with those rare options. I had the opportunity to ride with him during one of their daily drives up into the mountains. That was one hell of a drive and that car was amazing. He offered to let me drive it, but I was not skilled enough to handle a car like that. I told him maybe is some massive parking lot with nothing around to hit! He just laughed and told me some day I would have the opportunity. The day before I had to leave to go back to the US, I got that opportunity. That was one hell of a send off and I'll never forget the feeling of driving that car!

I know Tommy loves his HKS turbos, but at this point they are old tech. If I'm not mistaken, they are just modified Garrett GT series turbos. Sure they are ball bearing and have billet compressor wheels now, but the Garrett G series and the Borg Warner EFR series especially are leagues more advanced. Personally, I'd go with a single turbo. It simplifies everything and with a modern turbo you'll get similar or better response and more top end power anyways. I agree the G35-900 is too large. Unless you are shooting for 700HP or more. Surely the G30-770 is plenty. Very efficient from 250-600HP, can stretch to 700, and loves the 400-500 range. I could be wrong. Just my thoughts looking at the maps.

  • @slvrbakslpz4690
    @slvrbakslpz4690 2 роки тому +3

its 2022, go single on an inline. the turbo tech has improve drastically. Only reason to stick with twins is if you're dickhard on keeping it twins (OEM + and all that stuff). Cleans up everything on the hot side and the the performance is closely comparable depending on what you choose. Single and twins on a 2.6 feel sluggy under 4k anyway. IMO you should go with a Borg twin scroll equivalent to a GTss/2530 setup.

    • @802Garage

Everyone says go twins have never dealt with a tt car themselves. There's a reason why 98% of owners of tt rb/jz engines go single. They're are way less complicated and more efficient in every way and it's been proven. I myself have had an rb for 14 years now and also a jz. It doesn't take 2 days to fab up a new hot pipe and downpipe especially with trevors skills so Single>tt there's no question. Also g35 900 is way too big for standard 26. It'll be laggy af!

Go with some twin NiSMO or HKS or Tomei turbos with TiAL V-band turbine housings for less weight. Response is king

Maybe a g30-770 single for a stock rb26 im no pro but a g35-900 does seem a little big so maybe hks twins let tommy guide you

I started modifying cars in the early 2000s. We had internet but aside from a few forums there was nothing.
We just went from shop to shop. Japan imports were a dream we couldn't afford! Everything was custom and still way too expensive.

I've had twin hks gt-rs and g900. You need boost to get g900 to wake up so E85 is a must but you would be pushing a stock motor. My GT-RS's made 425awkw (aussie dyno) at 20-21psi which is the limit of those turbos. Twins have a lot more linear power single kicks harder. Up to you mate neither is a bad option. But Tommy's right if you want it done quickly with little to no modifications or fab work.

It all depends on what you want to do where or how you want to drive it
I have an BNR32 in Australia I've had for 13 plus years which
I use as a daily sometimes (because who doesn't want to go to a shit day job then drive a GTR home) anyway as a road driven and hills driving thrash car twins give it plenty of power for a street and regular pump gas car (mates had twin E85 pullin 10 sec quarters on untouched engine's stock but cams and that was sick
if you want serious power you strap on a big single and everything else to support it

GT-SS turbos, I thnk throwing a single big Garret in there in Tommys shop would be considered heresy, lol. No matter what you decide on I'm stoked to see the new shell begin to take form.

You don't go to The gatekeepers shop and not take his suggestions. Go HKS gt-ss and do it right one time. Have a bad ass gtr r32.
