I really respect Tommy’s dedication to the hks builds will all the trinkets. While I won’t say it’s not feasible for the rest of us, it’s just harder for anyone else to do the same, and mixing brands just looks sloppy, like a bunch of random spot tattoos vs a sleeve. New to the channel, loving the content🙌🔥

The HKS GT-SS twins kit is like $6,000+ and you could get something modern and more capable for less. Just kind of different styles and mindsets. If you want to look as factory or period correct as possible, I get it.
@@802Garage maybe I was exaggerating but it not the 90 and quality is not what it was And you not gaining much spool with twin because you only get 3 cylinder per turbo and small turbo that spool fast on a 1,3liter 3cylinder don't flow well at high rpm = need to short shift because the engine fell flat on is face Garrett make turbo that can make 600hp and will have full boost by 3000rpm on a 2.4 4cylinder let Twin are good for v8
Hks twins get my vote. Proven efficient setup and reliability. Do it right the first time or do it twice. In the long run it will cost more if something goes wrong. Tommy is brutally honest but but he knows his craft.
I rarely comment on videos but I think this is a video worth commenting on. Talking with Tommy and just chilling was a good video. Then going to the roots of the car and explaining YA, everyone can do custom 1,000 hp cars, but is that what the car is really about ? Reminiscing back in highschool buying car magazines at the local grocery store and “building” my car over and over again. That’s what it was all about. Really, I miss that part of cars. Building for me, and not to appeal to the masses, or worrying about if I’m faster than the next guy. Great video. Was good to see Tommy as himself.
I was stationed at Kadena AB, Okinawa and one of the civilians that we worked with had a huge collection of Nissan. Toyotas, Mazdas, etc. He had just about every iconic year and model in this massive warehouse. He drove every single one. A different car every day. He had an R33 GTR Nismo Edition with some special options. I believe it was #1 of 2 with those rare options. I had the opportunity to ride with him during one of their daily drives up into the mountains. That was one hell of a drive and that car was amazing. He offered to let me drive it, but I was not skilled enough to handle a car like that. I told him maybe is some massive parking lot with nothing around to hit! He just laughed and told me some day I would have the opportunity. The day before I had to leave to go back to the US, I got that opportunity. That was one hell of a send off and I'll never forget the feeling of driving that car!

For me, pre internet, all that nice HKS stuff (and other J brands, like Trust, RE Amemiya, etc.) was sold in Dynamic Autosports in Irvine (most of them are Japanese Americans and they always ordered stuff from Japan… used to be featured a lot in Turbo magazine, etc. back in the day). I used to love going there just to hang out and look at all the parts after high-school.
That’s all we had to use was magazines and books like you have . Some people still don’t realize how much it did change the whole game… we had to fab, mock up , tear dn, rebuild, use stuff like pvc pipe to mock up 4 links or custom bag setup’s… man have the times changed..now just order 90% of what you need to “build” something…
Yes less complex piping less heat in the engine bay and as fast or faster spool with a bigger HP potential And surely less expensive that a hks twin setup A correctly sized single is the way
Dang I hope you go with a single Garrett. I would not wanna work on a Tt one personally. But you could do twins for now to get it going without having to fabricate the piping etc. Then switch it to the single if you wanna get crazy with it.

I know Tommy loves his HKS turbos, but at this point they are old tech. If I'm not mistaken, they are just modified Garrett GT series turbos. Sure they are ball bearing and have billet compressor wheels now, but the Garrett G series and the Borg Warner EFR series especially are leagues more advanced. Personally, I'd go with a single turbo. It simplifies everything and with a modern turbo you'll get similar or better response and more top end power anyways. I agree the G35-900 is too large. Unless you are shooting for 700HP or more. Surely the G30-770 is plenty. Very efficient from 250-600HP, can stretch to 700, and loves the 400-500 range. I could be wrong. Just my thoughts looking at the maps.
its 2022, go single on an inline. the turbo tech has improve drastically. Only reason to stick with twins is if you're dickhard on keeping it twins (OEM + and all that stuff). Cleans up everything on the hot side and the the performance is closely comparable depending on what you choose. Single and twins on a 2.6 feel sluggy under 4k anyway. IMO you should go with a Borg twin scroll equivalent to a GTss/2530 setup.
Yeah maybe twin Borg Warner twins or Nismo twins with the TiAL V-band turbine housings for less weight and better packaging. I went in a R32 GTR from Japan with Nismo twin turbos with 480HP atw and that thing was mental neck snapping response! went from 70Kph to 180kph in no time at all.

The problem is with modern turbo tech and a correctly sized turbo you gonna have as fast or faster response and a bigger HP potential less complex piping and less heat in the engine bay because of the 2 turbo crammed together Twin turbo setup are dumb they where great in the 90 when turbo where laggy and not efficient especially on small engine like a rb
I like the single Idea better. Its you. The HKS flex that Tommy does is Nice and Clean. But then you have two turbos to keep serviced and working correctly whereas single turbo is "simpler" in the long run. But Tommy knows more about Nissan in his pinky than Ive ever known lol
Everyone says go twins have never dealt with a tt car themselves. There's a reason why 98% of owners of tt rb/jz engines go single. They're are way less complicated and more efficient in every way and it's been proven. I myself have had an rb for 14 years now and also a jz. It doesn't take 2 days to fab up a new hot pipe and downpipe especially with trevors skills so Single>tt there's no question. Also g35 900 is way too big for standard 26. It'll be laggy af!

I started modifying cars in the early 2000s. We had internet but aside from a few forums there was nothing. We just went from shop to shop. Japan imports were a dream we couldn't afford! Everything was custom and still way too expensive.
I've had twin hks gt-rs and g900. You need boost to get g900 to wake up so E85 is a must but you would be pushing a stock motor. My GT-RS's made 425awkw (aussie dyno) at 20-21psi which is the limit of those turbos. Twins have a lot more linear power single kicks harder. Up to you mate neither is a bad option. But Tommy's right if you want it done quickly with little to no modifications or fab work.
It all depends on what you want to do where or how you want to drive it I have an BNR32 in Australia I've had for 13 plus years which I use as a daily sometimes (because who doesn't want to go to a shit day job then drive a GTR home) anyway as a road driven and hills driving thrash car twins give it plenty of power for a street and regular pump gas car (mates had twin E85 pullin 10 sec quarters on untouched engine's stock but cams and that was sick if you want serious power you strap on a big single and everything else to support it
GT-SS turbos, I thnk throwing a single big Garret in there in Tommys shop would be considered heresy, lol. No matter what you decide on I'm stoked to see the new shell begin to take form.

HKS - there is so much more you can do with the car. This allows you to drive and enjoy the car without all the little things getting in your way.

Agreed Borg Warner EFR would be the peak tech to go with. I know they work with Garrett though, so G-Series is a good option.
