  • This is a video taken of a performance by the Shizukuishi High School Traditional Dancing Club at that school's Fall Festival in 2008. Shizukuishi is a small town about 20 minutes west of Morioka, the capitol of Iwate prefecture.
The Sansa Odori represents a joyous outburst of thanks. The story goes that a village was attacked by a vicious ogre, but that the ogre was repelled by good spirits or something. The villagers danced the Sansa Odori to celebrate their village not being annihilated. The dancers produce all their own music and rhythm using flutes, drums, and vocals. It's pretty sweet.
