**cough** Metrodome, Kingdome, RCA Dome, Montreal Olympic Stadium, Silverdome.. all low-budget domes that were outdated the moment they were opened.
(I guess the Carrier Dome managed to stick around despite being garbage, but colleges have lower standards. (Or at least Syracuse does.))
That was the initial idea for the GA Dome, until it got hit by a tornado.
The damage inflicted, and the cost to properly repair it, was in large part what led to Mercedes Benz Stadium.

I thought it was because Atlanta was being stupid and wanted to replace their already good stadium with a billion dollar one just to keep up with other cities' clout.
There's actually some examples of outdoor stadiums that were converted into dome stadiums, such as the Arena da Baixada in Brazil, the Belluna Dome in Tokyo and the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid!
Also, Sochi’s Olympic Stadium had a temporary roof added for the games. It was not part of the original design, and was added partway through construction because Putin wanted to waste $70 million or something on a roof he’d deconstruct after the ceremonies.
To be fair, Arena da Baixada was built with a roof planned for the future, and Santiago Bernabeu is only just building a roof after decades of planning, supporting the key point of the video. Belluna Dome has just a canopy and the sides are open all the way around (oh, and nobody likes it because it turns into a sauna in summer...well, even more of a sauna than the rest of Tokyo).
@@rockinmel1 yeah and for Seibu their canopy was built over a bowl, any shape more complicated would be very difficult and Lambeau while being round and bowl like would absolutely want to be enclosed
@@matthewlaird4009 Exactly, plus Seibu's stadium is also dug out rather than built up, making it much easier to build a canopy with the bare minimum of support infrastructure (basically equally spaced "feet" on the ground). I was kind of impressed when I first saw it in person, although inside...not so much.

Living in Detroit I've been pretty spoiled going to Lions games because we had the Silverdome then Ford Field. Building a new stadium with a roof has all sorts of advantages. With the roof in Detroit we have hosted 2 Superbowls one in the Silverdome and one at Ford Field. We have hosted the NCAA final 4 and the NCAA frozen 4 and a college bowl game. The list goes on with all the extra events that a dome can host, which brings well needed money to the city of Detroit. I love your channel and your videos. I always learn some really cool stuff watching your videos. Keep up the phenomenal work my friend!
Minnesota is almost identical, except we had indoor MLB baseball with 2 World Series, plus Big 10 college football - meaning September and October often saw the Vikings, Twins, and Gophers all jockeying for stadium prep each weekend.
I see a lot of Ford Field influences in US Bank Stadium, only taken to the technological extreme to allow full sunlight onto the field.

Having a stadium outdoors isn't some pussification of 🏈, it's to rack up more revenue from events. A stadium used 10 out of 12 months per year is a good venue

there is the santiago bernabeu in Madrid that is doing the exact thing though at $700 million, it isn't cheap. mind you that also includes the cost of installing a retractable pitch and a number of interior and exterior upgrades
As nice as domed stadiums are I always hope that there are still a majority of teams playing outdoors, it just adds another level of interest to the game for me. Some of my favorite games I’ve been too were in the snow at Heinz Field. Adds a whole other level of atmosphere to the game and I just like that when you travel somewhere you have to play in that climate whether it’s Florida heat or snowy winters up North. It gives more of a uniqueness to each city that they are playing in
To hell with that. Taking so long to play 16 games going into freezing weather
and competitive edge.
Especially with NFL prices, I'm not paying to be in disastrous weather. The outdoor events in poor weather is stupid. This is why in the winter I'm only going to NBA games or indoor NFL.

Not having a roof on Lambeau makes it a snow globe in December and January games. This is one stadium that would lose it's mystique if one was added.

In the 2000's there was some semi-serious discussion about putting a dome over the Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, VA. While not a race fan myself, I did have some morbid curiosity wanting me to see it happen, it only to see how many people it deafened.
With the past few years races getting constantly rained out, those discussions actually resurfaced earlier this year, and if I recall correctly, the organization that owns the track actually said it is being considered again. Though, that was back in March, and there hasn't been anything said about it since, unfortunately.

Wimbledon added a retractable roof and air-conditioning to two of their stadiums. The first was added in 2009, and cost approximately $165 million. The second was added in 2019, and cost approximately $85 million. I'm not sure why it cost so much less to add one in 2019.
Centre Court was practically rebuilt over three years in addition to the roof, so thats why it cost more. No 1. court was newer, opening in 1997, so didnt need as much structural work
Well I don't know about many sports stadiums but I know Citi Field which is the ballpark the Mets play in, the softer soil in the area (due to the bay) is the reason adding a roof would cost at least $2 billion because of the extra support it would require to make sure the whole structure is stable.
Little-known fact: the Truman Sports Complex (Chiefs/Royals) was originally intended to have one retractable roof movable between the two stadiums. Also, as other commenters have mentioned, the "building inside a building" concept has been done numerous times to build or retrofit canopies over stadiums large and small, but as you've pointed out, to make it climate-controlled is a whole other animal.
The canopy thing that the Dolphins did would be great for baseball diamonds and soccer fields since they play in the summer.

The total cost is said to surpass 700 million USD, some estimates indicate as a high as 1 billion USD.
After renovation are complete, there’s rumors that the NFL could schedule a game at the Santiago Bernabéu.

@@DownriverBusinessEventsGroup so this is the biggest part about the pitch…it’s split in SIX sections (I think 6..) and each section will be moved 6 floors UNDERGROUND right next to the pitch on the ground level. It’ll be natural of course and they’ll have state of the art equipment in those 6 floors to maintain a natural field 👍👍

I went to 1 winter game at the Seahawks stadium (it keeps changing names). I would never go to another winter game, it was absolutely freezing.
The Kansas City roof proposal is an off shoot of an old idea to have a moveable roof between the baseball and football stadiums when they both build in the early 70's. The roof would ride along a rail (you can kind of see the path intended in the photo) and open on either side. I think one consideration would be it could a roof withstand severe weather, with KC being in tornado prone area.

Yeah, it was more of a covering and not meant to be climate controlled. Really, just to control for snow and rain.

There was a proposal to turn the Cotton Bowl in Dallas into the Cotton Dome. The website for that proposal depicted a structure architecturally similar to American Airlines Center covering the stadium.

Actually it's very possible to put a roof over an open air stadium. Seibu Stadium in Japan & Montreal's Stade Olympique come to mind. Also,, did you see the sarcophagus they did in Chernobyl? That thing covers the entire nuclear plant zone that caused the famous meltdown in 1986. Anyway, it should have been attempted at the old Globe Life Park in Arlington. But Nolan Ryan was one helluva smooth talkin Texan when he pointed out that the cost of the roof would have been as much as it would be for building a new retractable roof stadium (Heh, yeah like 50yrs down the road it'll be worth it). Stade Olypique was always meant to have a roof. In fact a retractable roof. But it was finally finished 10 years after it was finished (outdoor). It was also renovated and no longer opens.

Now demolished Shea Stadium in NYC was designed to have a roof added to it. But apparently the ground was 2 swampy for the weight.
Technically the stadium that hosted the first indoor college bowl game in 1964 opened in 1929 so you could say they've existed since then
I'm sure you COULD do it, the architecture expertise and technology is there, but like you pointed out, the cost would, at best, be negligibly less compared to a whole new stadium where you could have every aspect controlled to a much finer degree. And beetlejuice has terrible ideas, that's another issue
I absolutely hate when people say they're trying to put a roof on Heinz Field (now Acrisure). If that happens, expect the fans to leave.
Vancouver did it for the Winter Olympics. Changed from a fixed bubble inflated roof to a complete retractable design. The supports for the retractable design was not part of the original bubble design. The cost benefit analysis was overtaken by schedule and the cost was comparable to a new stadium built from ground up.
But that was already a dome to begin with.
They did it after the Olympics, the Loins played 2012, and 2013 at Empire field. I'm from Hamilton, and a big CFL fan. I like that a city with money like Vancouver, was willing to build what I feel is the best stadium in the league.

After Shea Stadium opened, there was discussion of enclosing the open end and putting on a roof. Engineering studies determined that ground where Shea sat could not support the additional weight of the roof and the idea was abandoned.
Especially Baseball. The old blue jays stadium had a dome and players couldn't see fly balls so they couldn't catch it
Some crazy ideas I have in mind:
1. Build a smaller shed or canopy inside the stadium (meaning the posts or poles would be nearby the playing field). Probably not because it would have obscured the view from the top levels, also the risk of players crashing into those poles
2. Build a stadium underground (??????)
3. Hold events or games at midnight. Would definitely remove the problem of sun exposure but the timing wouldn't be fine with spectators
If MLS actually gets a team in Vegas, midnight kickoffs in the summer seem like the only sane solution.
I always envision a clam shell ( rolling roof) type deal where not only it covers the stadium but also a hundred yards around the perimeter of it.
Your Hvac systems ( chiller , boilers) don’t necessarily need to come from within side the stadium but can get pipe underground into the stadium. What’s left ( and an important factor) is you have to develop some type of exhaust systems on this rolling roof.
Indoor stadiums have a sameness to them: - Never inclement weather - many of them have none of the field in sun, with some in shadows (heck, some don’t have the shadows of the players) - no views of the local hills or city (yes, I know Allegiant has a ‘tease’ type lanai door for this), but because the stadium needs a roof, you don’t get distinct stands with gaps between them that might reveal the local area. - While some have grass, it is not the same as playing on grass outside (no chance of a rainstorm and some mud). The concourses are typically completely enclosed, giving the feeling of an arena instead of a stadium. I always loved the ramps and concourses when entering a stadium - The sky, the sounds etc. in indoor stadiums it doesn’t have this, it feels like going to a shopping mall. In short, there is a SAMENESS to domed stadiums. We have now entered the latest COOKIE CUTTER ERA and it consists of domed stadiums.

A good example of it working is BC Place in Vancouver BC, hosts CFL, MLS and quite a number events while still seating 55,000 people

They could have done it with Chicago Bears, Soldier Field because the tor thing down and rebuilt it. The Facade was the only thing left of the original building. I can't understand why you would spend so much money to pretend your building is old. Lambeau Field never gutted the building and rebuilt. They actually added on instead. Lambeau field just got bigger and bigger as I grew up. And right now they are adding on to the structure again. It's insane the structure that surrounds the old part of the bowl.

I get the excitement of the outdoor stadiums for Football but it is also very nice to not have to worry about the weather when going to a game lol. Baseball is a sport that has the biggest problem with this, so many games getting postponed because of rain outs

True- but who wants to sit inside on a decent weather day, let alone a beautiful weather day? The thought of spending a spring or summer afternoon or evening inside a dome is unappealing. Give me the elements.

Check out the U.S. Open National Tennis Stadium in NYC. It was built as an open-air stadium, and years later - a self-supporting, retractable some was added. This is no small stadium, as 23K+ and the self-supporting principles here could be scaled to meet a larger stadium.
I did i go into it in the video. 23k is not much bigger than a basketball arena so its a bit different doing it at a larger scale. That worked better because the stadium was more square and had no gaps either. Tennis court is a lot easier to cover than a baseball or football field.
They put a roof on Olympic starting I in motel cannda for the Montreal expos back in 1982
Oita Stadium a.k.a. "The Big Eye" in Japan initially opened without a retractable roof. The retractable roof was later added.

Montreal's Olympic Stadium was open air for a decade before they added the roof. Doesnt really count because originally the roof was suppose to be ready in 1976 in time for the Olympics and baseball and football.

Most of these football & stadiums should have retractable roofs and domes from the start before building them.
I will agree that it's a bit expensive. But it's worth it.
I'm from Pittsburgh, PA and I wanted a roof on top of Acruisure Stadium so I can enjoy a concert or a BIG Wrestling Event.
The Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis had a roof made of Teflon-coated fiberglass fabric. The roof was held in place by air currents from below. Unfortunately, the roof collapsed so many times, the entire stadium had to be taken down.
Those air currents especially from the Large Air Conditioner behind Home Plate are what help propel The Twins into hitting so many Homeruns. Baseball was never meant to be played in a dome.
NOt why it was taken down. It was taken down so the Vikings could build a stadium with luxury suites in order to make more money.
Strangely, the Carrier Dome in Syracuse is designed by the same architects as the Metro Dome and is quite similar, yet has never collapsed. Even with the weight of Upstate NY’s considerable precipitation, the Carrier Dome’s fibreglass roof has held firm.

It *can* be done, it's just doesn't really make financial sense most of the time. It's going to be very large and expensive, not a $100 million upgrade, and if you're building that big of an additional structure, the owner would rather knock down the stadium & build a new one to make other revenue generating improvements (like luxury suites) and have all new building infrastructure.
An interesting side note, I know it's a much smaller scale, but I remember going to hang out with my friend at a different college in Boston, and we go into the lobby of this sleek modern glass & steel skyscraper building.... and inside the lobby is an entire 1920's-ish brick & marble building. The original college's building, like a giant for it's time bank-ish building, they just built the new (enclosed & climate controlled) building around and above the old one. It was pretty trippy to see glass and steel walkways going *into* where windows on the old building were. It's doable.
Center Court at Wimbledon
My father and uncle were engineers. They didn't design sports stadiums but impressed upon me that engineering issues are a part of our everyday lives. Those darned engineers will get you every time! But for the money to add a dome to an existing stadium, it's easier and more cost effective just to design and build a brand new domed stadium from scratch. Financing it with public funding in today's environment is another matter entirely.
Football stadiums are Just TOO LARGE to add a roof! Might as well build a new Dome!
If the old doughnut stadiums still existed, you know the ones that looked like huge ashtrays, had roofs added it may have been as easy as putting a lid on a coffee cup maybe this could have been done. Think old Three Rivers Stadium or Riverfront Stadium or Veterans Stadium (Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Philadelphia). Bad sucky a suspended roof and enclosing the round concourses and perhaps it would be feasible.
Today the best that could be done to stadiums that are asymmetrical would be to use something like Miami but that wouldn’t keep out the cold in places like Minnesota, Detroit or Cleveland. It would be better to start all over again instead of attempting to retrofit a ceiling on an existing stadium.
Baseball stadiums would just never work. Think of all the odd angles of Fenway Park and you understand that it might cost more and certainly be inferior the just plowing the old and building the new.
In the old days of automobiles there was a market for aftermarket air conditioning that was both costly and looked like a unit hanging out a bedroom window. The same can be said for stadiums.

The roof lights up at night, doesn’t appear to be of heavy weight… and a game was delayed for lightning (rare in LA) because the roof apparently can’t handle it.
It’s not as open air as T-Mobile for the Mariners, but air can flow through it (and in some surprising places). So fans at the CFB championship in January were getting wet because of a storm blowing through.
Parken Stadium, Copenhagen. They retrofitted a retractable roof to that one.
The stadium opened in 1992 but the retractable roof was added in 2001. It might have been that the design allowed for a retractable roof to be added later. I can’t seem to find any information that confirms this though.
Rather than a roof, what about a canopy for baseball stadiums. Removable in the summer, not to be used in rain. But enough for cold weather teams to keep drifting snow and the super cold out during fist week of season and during world series?

It helped that The Meadowlands had already been there for some time when they did that.
They proposed building a roof over Levis Stadium shortly after it’s inauguration. When designing it they didn’t take into account the California heat.

Can't turn an outdoor stadium into an indoor one you say... tell that to the Saitama Seibu Lions. Seibu Dome used to be an open air stadium, but they added a roof to it in the 90s, and left a gap between the dome and the stadium proper to let air in so that the ball would still carry.
Just a covering, just like ashe stadium.

Idk man we don't do it in America but there are stadiums that have been converted overseas. Obviously the whole point though would be to mitigate precipitation like snow and rain. It wouldn't necessarily need to be climate controlled.
I'm sure fans from Wisconsin and Chicago wouldn't mind the harsh cold. They already attend in the freezing temperatures anyway, but if you can keep everyone from getting wet that would probably be an optimal situation. The problem probably lies in the thousands of pounds of snow and ice on a makeshift roof.
Like So-Fi Stadium (which is a must visit stadium) has a planned overhead structure that's part of the building, but its still an open air stadium, obviously in LA this is ideal because you hardly have to worry about snow. So you're shaded and protected from rain, but still technically outside.
I'm sure it's cheaper for most NFL orgs to just build a second slightly smaller enclosed stadium for harsh weather days anyway as you would probably only use it a few times every few years.
Edit: like the Bills game this week was re-located, which doesn't happen often but if every team had a "backup" stadium to conduct game day operations it would probably be worth the investment, at least to the fans lol
Even if The Bills had one there was 7 Feet of Snow there. Unless there backup stadium was hundreds of miles away it wouldn't have mattered.
I wouldn't be surprised if an outdoor stadium ever got a dome someday. Somebody's gonna be "bold" enough try it! 🤷
They put a roof on the Olympic Stadium in Montreal. They did a horrible job of it, but they did it.
Also, the University of Idaho enclosed their previously outdoor stadium. It's not a big stadium and not much of a "dome", but it was done.
Olympic was built as a dome, it just wasnt finished and capped off until later

The most I could ever see is a roof like the Mariners stadium. The roof isn't sealing, instead functioning like a shed, but you still have to build a roof structure about the existing stadium and worry about some ventilation. It just doesn't seem worthwhile.
The Mariners play in an outdoor stadium now and have for awhile.

It is my belief that the next stadium trend everyone will go crazy for is when a retractable roof stadium truly makes the stadium feel outdoors. AT&T stadium for example is not outdoors even with the roof and end zone doors fully opened. I've always wondered why carbon fiber isn't the go to roof material since it's stronger and lighter than steel.
Seems like the NFL is listening to people like you because both Tennessee and Buffalo are building new stadiums that are indoors with artificial turf.

As far as Kansas City is concerned, IIRC the roof was rejected because, not in spite, of "the elements": voting Chiefs fans decided that the home-field benefits of open Arrowhead (as far as baseball is concerned, if Kauffman is roofed the Royals still lose to Bumgarner in 2014 and take care of the Mets the next year) outweighed the off-field benefits of an enclosed stadium.

It's not about millionaire athletes playing in weather. It is first about increasing your attendance fanbase by being able to have them watch a game in a climate controlled environment and second and more importantly it is about being able to increase the amount of events that the stadium can host. Which equals BIG $$$$$ 🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑!!!!!!

You forgot to mention that the Harry S. Truman sports complex (Arrowhead and Kauffman stadiums) were designed to have a rolling roof that could cover either stadium from the very beginning. The rolling roof is the reason why Arrowhead's upper deck has the unique shape it has. Cost overruns during the original construction of the stadiums ultimately caused the roof to be scrapped. Had the measure passed in 2006, the complex would have actually been completed as initially planned, which obviously never happened. Kansas City was going to have the world's first retractable roofed stadiums 17 years before the Skydome opened in Toronto... THAT is how far ahead of its time that sports complex was when it was built. Over 50 years later they are still two of the best stadiums in the world. When everyone else was building shitty cookie cutter multipurpose stadiums that sucked for both sports, Kansas City couldn't have gotten it more right than they did.

This makes sense if you have essentially a disposable stadium, like Washington, where they are going to build a new stadium not just keep up the old one. A place like Green Bay, where the idea is to keep Lambeau open? If they want to put a roof on it, why not do it? Yeah it may be expensive, but they aren't replacing the stadium and NFL franchises aren't hurting for money. Also, like how they added concourses, they could have added the roof then, let the concourse buildings support the roof and solve an issues with the stadium not being able to support it. The climate control part might be difficult, but definitely not impossible. You're right though, for most places, building a new stadium would be a better choice. Teams like the Red Sox, Cubs, and Packers might be willing to spend the money to make their places more comfortable, yet keep their 100 year old stadiums

@@DownriverBusinessEventsGroup I'm not saying they should do it, necessarily. What I am saying is if you have an iconic stadium that you don't want to get rid of, but you need or want an indoor stadium, that's a reason to spend the money and add a dome to it.

I disagree with you on that. Going to a football when it’s outdoors is classic and entertaining. You don’t get that experience in a domed stadium.
