Great idea to showcase the "mistakes" - It's the only way any of us learn anything so thanks for the honesty. Great job on this ad - 99.9% of viewers will not notice anything wrong at all. I also use the phantom LUTs but only "neutral" ones to convert to red 709 then grade from there. The new versions are even more "Arri-like."
Really fascinating video, thanks so much for your openness, and letting us learn through your learning! A good value monitoring setup is something I’m working on at the moment, especially for multicam interviews. I’m experimenting with an HDMI split screen 4-to-1 adapter going into a 27” 4k monitor but never considered the convenience of V-mount. Would be interested to see your video about your setup if you get the time.
Great video as always! I didn't even notice the pod but you definitely blended it in well! The most visually jarring part for me was the space surrounding the different glasses as they were being swapped out (perhaps a lower f-stop or green screen might have made that easier to hide). I really appreciate these types of videos and think retrospectives are a great way to keep improving each shoot 👊
I’ll be honest, I’ve got way more story questions than anything else. The spot is a bit all over the place with both creative decisions that are confusing, and an edit that misses a little more than it hits. Currently it reads more like he doesn’t know how to use a gravity feeder vs what I think you’re going for, these coffee drops are so good you won’t miss the gravity feeder. Shot wise, the gravity feeder is a bit of wasted prop here, and yes, stopping down on the lens brought more of the kitchen in focus which serves as a distraction in the one time you actually show the feeder in action. Also shot wise, she crosses the frame from right to left here too, why? This is the only time she’s ever on the left and given the following close up quick cuts she could have done that from anywhere around the island and never crossed at all, leaving you an even better option to put them on the same plane without the added distraction of extra movement. Anyway love the post mortem, I’m not trying to tear anything down here. I’ve worked on a lot of commercials at this point and I have regrets in just about every one of them - that’s part of the gig. That said, your 5 fixes were great overall, non of them stood out enough to give much thought. Better “in the moment” direction would have helped this even more though. This felt like it probably worked perfectly on paper and then on set the goal was to execute the shot list as is without a guiding hand to keep a close eye on the bigger picture. This is why I love B Cams because more often than not, those few extra angles can save a project in post where the storyboard might miss the mark. Thanks for sharing, love the channel!
Hey Eric, fun watching you guys getting creative - loved your music video - I feel like a small focused light could have given that product shot some pop but admire your skills with the camera because there is a lot more skill on show than mistakes - nice spec ad and thanks for going to the effort of sharing.
Great video! Love the honest insight. Watching the ad for the first time, I didn't understand the conflict. For example, the look she gave him was not something I noticed.
Yeah the cup comp is tough. May have been better to use the box it came in. Aligning a square box onto a flat surface is easier (without cam tracking markers and full lens unwrap/rewrap etc. that's a whole different thing). The denoise worked out very well, looks good. The phantom utopia lut feels a little strong on the green. But that is totally subjective/art direction choice. I think stopping down was a better choice than racking focus. The viewer may not glance over to her face, staying focused on what the guy is doing. In that scenario, the focus change would look like the camera went out of focus, leaving the viewer to hunt to where they are supposed to be looking (centre left) then the next shot is in the middle again to read the box. The product shot where he grabs the cup and moves to the back, the actors feel a little far in the back. Not sure what the physical limitations of the location were, but going with a long lens keeping everyone closer together may have been nice. Not totally sure on that though, hmm To be fair, I'm a nobody on the internet, so what do I know haha. I think you did well considering the circumstances, all the best dude 😎
Thanks for this. I thought the Phantom luts had a green hue that I didn’t like compared to your colorist. Looking forward to all of your C80 videos in the future.
The non-Phantom grade was better. I never would have thought twice about the pods shot, especially if I only saw this ad once. Overall, great work - you are brave to air your mistakes. We all make them, and that's how grow.
Phantom was too green in this example, but might have pulled through better with some minor adjustments. Nick’s color was way better for skin tone and maintaining the natural whites and brightness of the tile in the background, though over all look was bit cool given the subject matter could have used a touch more warmth.
Her look at him is too early. Locads of reflections in various glass items. The pice of cardboard product boxes is a mess. Someone needed to square up those boxes. To defocus the background you could have moved the big coffee machine forward. (if there was space) You dont need a 1200 to do CU of the white coffee.. but you need the light to be 4 inches out of shot.
Luts .. the wall was obvisouly white.. your 'coulrousits' delivered that which is basic. The lut makes it green which might be OK for a zombie movie. You must develope an eye here? or show it to your mum.. she will say .. why is that green.
More videos like this please! This type of content is really helpful as someone who is working my way into the commercial world.
Thanks for having me help out! Was a blast brother!

I noticed that too! Even just an opacity mask with a frame hold from the first drink would have worked

You’re spot on. The goal was to light a few fun frames, story was an afterthought and it shows... Appreciate your thoughts!
Super thanks. . . always good to learn from what we've done so thanks for sharing

spec ad turned out so good

Great tips as always would love to see an editing breakdown
polarizing for the reflections on the glass/mug? Thanks for sharing btw!
Definitely like the color grade better then the luts
Keurig is good for me!!!

thx
Badazz realworld video 🔥💣💥never would had picked it out until you pointed it out🤯💯🫶Thank You
I just came back from my first music video shoot, let's see what mistakes I made ^^
Colorist's work is FARRRR better than Phantom LUTs for this application in my opinion. Don't love the green cast the Phantom LUTs put on the footage.
