I would truly love to watch the senate interviews of John Mitchell and H.R. Halderman. I still do not understand why those interviews are not available.
These hearings are fascinating to me now, when they first aired I was a kid, and we all hated the Watergate hearings, it interrupted pretty much all television for quite some time!
General Walters was an extremely smart man who knew much more about the Watergate matter than many know. He made it clearly known to all that he would not compromise himself or the CIA for anyone, including the president who appointed him. He also said many years later, that had Watergate happened during the LBJ administration and with Hoover at the FBI, it would have been a 1 day news story, and never heard or read about again.
On the last sentence: would that be the result of LBJ's actions or of those of Hoover ? And what, in the end is the best: that such actions as undertaken by frivolous "grown up" boyscouts as Liddy and Hunt end up under the carpet or are exposed ? Is "international prestige" more important than the domestic side of the story ? Let's remain fair; some "over-enthousiastic" actions of the FBI in those days were dangerously coming close to fascism, while there was a whole Maffia waiting to be caught while counting their illegally obtained millions. And all that, because a wrong, unwinnable war in a country with no oil, no titanium, no diamonds, no pipelines.
As we know, Watergate was only 1 of a series of illegal covert activities by the Whitehouse "plumbers" which started around a year before the burglary. Hoover was still alive at this time. Before the plumbers were even assembled, Nixon tried to get Hoover's FBI to carry out these personal illegal assignments. Nixon told Hoover that presidents had a 'divine right to do anything they wanted'. Hoover was apparently appalled at the suggestion, he outright refused and even threatened Nixon if he ever bring up such a suggestion again. That's the entire reason the plumbers were assembled. Nixon couldn't get the FBI to do his dirty work and the CIA doesn't operate domestically, so he had to assemble his own 'personal police force' directly in the Whitehouse to do these things he wanted done. Luck would have it (from Nixon's point of view) that Hoover died just over a month before Watergate. He used the opportunity to hire a new FBI director who had never been in the FBI or had any law enforcement experience at all. He knew that someone unfamiliar and unattached to the FBI would likely be willing to do whatever he asked both because that person would be very grateful to him for the appointment, and that person might even assume that any orders from the president have to be followed. This is why why L Patrick Gray, someone who no one had heard of before was thrust straight into the position of Director instead of Mark Felt who was the Assistant-Director, had essentially been acting as the Director since Hoover's death, had over 40 years serving in the FBI and was the obvious choice. Felt, who was revealed to be the mysterious 'Deep Throat' source after his death, chose to leak info to the press mainly because he was disgruntled at a completely new outsider getting the Director job instead of him. If Felt had been appointed Director, it can be said with almost certainty that he wouldn't have ever leaked a thing.
Washington DC typically gives at least 80% of its votes to democrats. I would guess that is how much of the federal bureaucracy votes as well. So I agree that it would be covered up in a democrat administration and certainly would be leaked in a republican administration.
I don't know anything about LBJ but no question about it - had hoover been alive - none of this ever would have happened - Hoover would have easily made it go away probably before it even got processed by DC police
yeah - and that is because they never really adequately prosecuted the people - lets face it - Nixon got pardoned the rest "all his men " basically got slaps on the wrist @ club fed - does anyone wonder why there has been increasingly worse crimes against the constitution each time a republican is elected president
On the surface, you're right. But the hearings kept avoiding why the Democratic headquarters were bugged. It was because Larry O'Brien's possible knowledge of the details of Nixon's supervision of the failed attempted CIA Castro assassination which led to the use of the same trained team to assassinate JFK. This is why Nixon kept trying to limit the FBI investigation in the CIA Mexico reference, which was code for the plans to invade Cuba and change the government.
Thank you for posting the entire testimony.
I enjoy watching these tapes. A great public service.

That check found in Bernard Barker's shirt pocket opened up a can of worms for a lot of people, the Agency included.

Love them all!! No Haldeman testimony?
Compared to what has happened ever since Ronald Reagan took office, Watergate was a lame fraternity prank that went awry.
