A native of Aichi, Japan, Masaya Kamei-at the age of 20-has achieved major piano accolades in his home country. He was the first to be accepted to the Toho Gakuen College Music Department a year early (in 2019). At the same time, he was the first to win both of Japan’s largest national competitions, the Music Competition of Japan Piano Division and the PTNA Piano Competition Special Grade, in a single year. Other awards include the Masuzawa, Nomura, Iguchi, Kawai, Miyake, and Steinway Prizes; the Argerich Arts Promotion Foundation Award; and the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award.
Those early wins not only provided many invitations for engagements-they also changed the young artist’s performance perspective: “I realized that I would now be playing the piano as the champion of Japan’s largest competition. A new kind of professionalism sprouted in my heart that has always exceeded expectations.”
His vigorous concert schedule the past few years includes recitals and concertos at major halls in Japan, such as Suntory Hall, Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall, and Tokyo Metropolitan Theater; and with the Tokyo City Philharmonic, Tokyo Philharmonic, New Japan Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony, Chiba Symphony, and 21st Century Tokyo Orchestras.
In 2021, Masaya was selected as a scholarship student of the Rohm Music and Ezoe Memorial Recruit Foundations. He is currently a fourth-year student at Toho Gakuen, under the guidance of Hisako Ueno, Michiko Okamoto, and Shoichi Hase. He recently placed third at the 2022 Maria Canals International Music Competition.
Masaya, if you’re reading this know you absolutely deserved to be in the finals and top medalist and we’re all shocked by the decision. Keep doing what you’re doing, you’re going to have a great career and I’ll certainly be buying tickets to your next concert!

I am shocked that Masaya Kamei did not reach the finals. Yes, the Waldstein is a touch soft-grained, but the rest of the recital ranges from excellent to jaw-dropping. The final section of Scarbo is off the charts.
A most insightful musician with a phenomenal technique.
He makes everything interesting.
I look forward to his concerts when he comes to the US.

カンパネラ、良かったけど、アンコールで弾くような曲かなと思いました。モーツアルトの19番も含めて、全体的に印象が薄い。他のコンテスタントのアピール力が強いので。でも彼の演奏は誠実さを感じますし好印象です。まだ若いので、これからに期待したいですね！

@@miyakoyokoyama8847 同じ曲も誰が演奏するかによって、またはそれをどのように解釈して接近するかによって観客に伝わる感動は天と地のように変わる。 この演奏者は本当にうまい演奏者だ。 しかし、そのような部分で大きな印象を与えることはできなかった。 ところが、曲も感情が平易な選曲だ。 食べ物で言えば材料の味はそのまま生かしたが、全体的に味が薄すぎるのと似た状況だという話だ。

Went back and rewatched this performance. His Mozart concerto was LEAGUES better than some of the finalists and this performance was outstanding. How on Earth did he not make it to the finals?

Many are baffled with Kamei not being one of the finalists. The bright side is that he just gained scores of new fans, probably more than the finalists.
Some? It was the best mozart i've heard. Better than Radu Lupu's famous reading of this

Unbelievable he didn't advance. I found his poetry to be stronger than any of the other contestants. The best performance of Gaspard I've heard live.
He just tied for Gold in the Long-Thibaud Competition. Completely agree about his artistry. His interpretations are modern, unique, completely authentic to themselves, yet show complete respect for the compositions. He revels in the music. His articulation is crystalline. And he seems to have a completely uncomplicated relationship with the piano. So many other performers come across as though they are struggling against or trying to control the instrument.

I’m Japanese and can tell his modest and pure personality from all scenes. He is only 20 just started international career, i think god left him brighter opportunities in the future thanks to juries this time
All selections were incredible. I fought the Waldstein for years, and never ever got with 50 miles of his performance.
This is one of the best interpretations of these pieces with excellent technique.
The Cliburn this year will be remembered as much for the jury's omission into the Finals of Masaya Kamei as for who is selected.

Ha, nice programming - the piece Ravel wrote to be the hardest in the repertoire … and then the piece previously considered the hardest in the repertoire, inspiring Ravel to push the limits even further with Gaspard
Definitely, Masaya Kamei is worth listening to! I don't like to question the jurors' decisions because they were just their personal opinions, which don't affect how I feel about the semifinalists who were not advanced to the final. However, I sincerely hope their decisions, were NOT influenced by something else... but the competitors' musical merits ONLY.
Everyone is questioning the jurors’ decisions. To avoid the wrong impression, they should show us the score sheets!

I think it's exactly the complexity of the program that might have got him cut. In some ways, it's too technical and despite it being highly musical, are all in some ways too virtuosic

Just wondering why you think so. Is it a technical component of his? Or something else? Genuinely curious, pretty new to the piano scene and was introduced to it through Yunchan
@@dionariestanto9286 Many, many people claim that his Rach 3 and Transcendental Etudes are the greatest of all time. I've watched both performances in their entirety, and while they aren't easy pieces (and his interpretations aren't boring), I didn't feel like they were anything unique or innovative.
