      Hey, thanks! Channel members get a sneak peek of the latest videos. This way, I can thank you for the extra support (and catch mistakes before a video launches. Additionally, I will respond to all channel member comments and questions. I'll respond to public comments as I'm able.
      So, I'm glad you caught this early access to the video and I now know this works. I hope you'll share some feedback about the video's specific content. Are you excited about this series? Do you think I'm crazy? What other thoughts do you have about this video?
      Now that I know this early access for members works, I'll work on email announcements. Stay tuned. I'm getting everything set up.

    Have missed seeing you. Glad you're back.
    This project sounds quite intriguing and something I am interested in with some of my Military ancestors.
    I've found while researching my father-in-law's (fil) WWII military service (which I'm still working on) that I really didn't (and still don't) know a whole lot about how the draft was handled. Found looking at local newspapers at that time to be pretty informative. I've also found reading many books written by officers in his unit/battalion/etc to be quite informative and helpful at filling some of the blanks. I should add that my fil's military file was "destroyed" in the major fire at St. Louis and he never talked about his 5 years of service, but did earn a Purple Heart and Oak Leaf.

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  3 місяці тому

      Wow. I'm always surprised, even though I shouldn't by now, when veterans won't talk about their experiences. After reading the Red Badge of Courage, perhaps there is something in that book that explains why they didn't speak of their service.
      BTW... I love newspapers. However, for this project, I didn't consult them as my goal was a quick snapshot not a deep dive. If I decide to become an expert on the 133rd, then newspapers will top my research list.

    Just found this video at the suggestion of the all-knowing algorithm. The kind of research you are doing is, in my view, the best that genealogy has to offer. Understanding the actual circumstances of an ancestor's life in a vastly different time, not just accumulating dates, names, stray facts, etc. It takes a great deal of hours and relentless curiosity about the human experience. I look forward to reading your blog and learning from your videos.

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  3 місяці тому

      I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video. I honestly think that the future of 'genealogy' research is group based, rather than just individual based. It will benefit family historians, historians, sociologists, anthropologists, and so forth. I just don't know if we have the tools for such work just yet, and that's seems to be a problem.

      @@FamilyHistoryFanatics I am researching the original owner of a 1900 handmade English shotgun recently bought by a family member at auction. Quickly learned that the first owner lived in the mansion believed to have inspired Toad Hall in the Wind in the Willows and that his close family included the estate manager for Balmoral Castle under three kings, the man who brought the first hippopotamus to London, the host for a Royal Regatta, and a spy working as on Hogan's Heroes during WWII while a prisoner of war. Groups are indeed interesting.

    I am looking forward to this. I have recently become more fascinated more by the tiny townships/census districts as a whole where some of my relatives lived than just my individual relatives - wanting to study them more to see what they can tell me about their pre- and post- Civil War lives, so this will help me feel out if this type of research can go and some more ideas of how to get started in a community where the courthouse kept getting burnt down decade after decade.

      Nice. I hope you enjoy the journey. I think you'll discover just as many ways NOT to do the research as how to go about it. I really feel 'group' research will have more lasting and powerful impact on genealogical and historical research. Hopefully we all can collaborate to find the right tools for the job.

    Glad to see more videos. I watched a lot of them when I first got my DNA done during the holidays last year and wanted to figure out how to find lost relatives. Eventually a lost relative contacted me, someone my mom had thought died in infancy and who she thought she'd never see again, but in a tragic twist in fate she contacted me shortly after my mom passed away this past May. So, they never did get to see each other again.

    It is a noble quest to embark on. I too have had an interest in the endeavors of ancestors for some time now, a greatgrandfather was in the unon army at the time of the civil war, the information I got was he was in the 171st. Ohio national gaurd,and I was told he was 17, when he entered service, there is more I wish to discover, so this a facinating topic.😊

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  3 місяці тому

      Oooo... you have enough to begin diving into documents. Three record collections that I would suggest looking for:
      1. A regimental history for the 171st. While you're ancestor might not be specifically named, you'll learn about the unit, more than a brief summary in the Rosters or the Soliders & Sailor Database at the NARA
      2. Seek out the Civil War Pension Index. Since you know the name and the regiment, you might just find your ancestor.
      3. Once you find the file numbers on the Civil War Pension Index, then see if the full pension file is available at the NARA website. Or save some money and request a genealogist from the Association of Professional Genealogist website who does Civil War Pension copying work to go to the NARA and make a digital copy of the record for you.
      Good luck!

    What an interesting project! I did a similar project with a neighborhood, but nothing with this large of a scale. Have you considered using the tree on Storied to help you map the relationships? I don't think it would work for a lot of your data analysis, but it might help you visualize how the men in the unit are interconnected since it allows you to connect the FAN club.

    Fortunately I live in Missouri which has the Missouri Military Museum. Even though they have a large amount of holdings, it isn't complete. One thing is to have an understanding that National Guard Units aren't always considered a part of the entire federal forces in some battles. This can leave you looking for information that isn't there. Start with the closest information before moving outward. - Next part of things to consider in the bigger picture is that Ohio is what I think of as a crossroads state. It had cousins that were parts of families who moved on over the last 60 to 70 years before the war. - Newspapers - newspapers - newspapers were the media of the time and some interesting in formation can be as far away as the west coast. However some isn't going to be available on internet websites. I've had to request reels of film and use the geneaologist's aerobic exercise of cranking through the images. Perhaps it sounds intimidating, well ok I confess it is. Each unit has records in diferent places and families can have records in different places. Good luck in your hunt!
