This game, along with Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Adventure, came out about the same time and were the first that I remember as an 11 yr old having a story. To me, it added a lot of replay value until I had gotten to where I could finish them in no time. They all had their problems but they were a whole new genre of game and it carries on to the top labels of today.
I'll always have fond memories of this game, and it's always in the 'go-to' collection for an Atari quickie. I vividly remember buying this game from a store called Eckerd's, similar to Walgreens or CVS, with saved allowances and old pop bottles. You know, even as a kid, I never had the issues that seem to plague so many of the players today, and I still can't understand why it attracts so much hate. With all that said... excellent video Greg, and easily the definitive tutorial for completing the E.T. quest! 👍
I remember Eckerds! There was one at the end of the shopping center where I worked (as a bagboy at Publix.) Thanks for the kudos, I hope it helps people get over their PTSD of the game. lol
Dude, thank you for this. I know I beat it as a kid but it must have been dumb luck. 🤷🏻♂️. Now I know exactly how to do it. You rock brother! I hope all is well, it’s been a while.
My brother and I got this for Christmas and we always appreciated any gift; especially Atari cartridges. I didn’t think it was that difficult compared to other games. The ironic part of my story is that I didn’t see E.T. the movie till 10 years after it came out. I didn’t understand why it sold so many tickets. So I am one of the few who like the game more than the movie…
Not a bad game at all !!! Lots of imagination and manuals needed during the Atari 2600 years. I think people were subconsciously screaming for better graphics by the early to mid 80s. Still, I'd rather play this game over most current gen junk. Great video !!!
Haha this is one of the dozen or so Atari games we had as kids and I'll be honest, we liked the game. Even though we had no idea what we were supposed to be doing. We knew we were supposed to collect pieces of the phone but never knew what we were supposed to do with it once we had it all. We always ended up running around to avoid the bad guys and running out of life haha. Never had the manual unfortunately which is absolutely necessary. A few years back I made it my mission to finally figure out how to play it and beat it. Which I did haha. Good video like always.
5 year old me, found the game frustrating because I didn't know what to do and I couldn't read. If I fell into the pit I would reset the game or play Combat.
A really great adventure game, once you go home just press the button the game continues with same score but starts to get harder and harder. Signs get harder to find, candy pieces are not as plentiful, it can get quite challenging after a couple of times making it home. Fun game.
Since I'm blind I can't actually play this game, but I've always loved its sounds. Sometimes I would just stick the game in and wander around till I fell into the pits and see if I would happen to find any phone pieces. It was fun.
Whoa.. You're over driving the brightness on that CRT! You're going to drive it into an early death with it so bright even the black areas aren't exactly black.
Well this is different. Every time I heard/watch about E.T. for Atari 2600 it's always the "[American] video game crash". Now this is actual walkthrough video that worth watching (from a perspcetive of a person's first console is PS1)
I uploaded this on June 11, 2022, which coincidentally is the 40th Anniversary of the release of the movie! Unbelievable and totally unplanned!

Playing the game makes me want to see the movie again. Been awhile...

If only there was an in-game tutorial like nowadays. :D

Have you beaten it since?
Spent hours of my childhood playing this game. Wouldn't trade the memories for anything.

...huh. I never knew you could float at the last second to avoid fall damage in a pit.

It needs service, but I'm not about to go rooting around in there. I'm just lucky it works.

Shoulda read the manual!
@@GregsGameRoom I was very young, nobody got time for that! Lol
Why didn't they just make game 3 the first one in the first place. Every harder games are after game 1!!!!
Was wondering that myself.
