I think the reason why Mario is atonal while DoopMario has a tonal is because Doopliss is speaking without thinking of how Mario would actual say things. The real Paper Mario has always been a little mute other than the occasional wahoo, but Doopliss talks in full on sentences when you confront him. Imagine someone impersonating one of your friends at school. Strangers would get easily fooled since people normally talk and that’s probably just the voice they haven’t heard yet. YOU’d know immediately, because your friend barely talks to strangers. It’s like that.

You know what would be cool ? A mod where you play as Mario against Dooplis in his Mario Shadow form (because he takes this Shadow form himself in the first battle before taking your identity) only to reveal when Vivian arrives that you've actually been playing Dooplis the whole time. From that point on, instead of looking and acting exactly like Mario, he would have the beady eyes and slow creepy movement he has in the actual game, showing that he isn't Mario, and that the Shadow form is the real Mario. And at that point you would swap to playing as the real Mario and Vivian.

I was playing paper mario ttyd for the first time on my hacked wii, just today, when i last saved after the doopliss fight, the usb that had the save file and the game just randomly died. I tried a lot of stuff restoring it, but it seems that it just died. Im happy that atleast i didnt get spoiled about the doopliss boss fight
