This mini portable wireless travel router is quite handy if you are on the go as you won't need to input the hotel wifi password multiple times. It also you to connect through a VPN to be extra secure.

I am not too sure, it does have VPN function of which I haven't tried out. I suppose your idea could work if you set up some sort of killswitch where your computer only connects with the internet only if the VPN has connected (and intenet disconnects when the VPN stops working for whatever reason). I know Surfshark VPN has this function inbuilt to the windows app. Hope this helps!
