- In this video Dave and I explore the ancient BATU CAVES in Gombak, Selangor, Malaysia. From central Bukit Bintang, getting to the site was a quick monorail to Nu Sentral station and easy (30 min) train ride to the end of the Blue Line. This series of limestone caves are one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside of India. The caves are approximately 400 million years old and have been recognised as a place of worship since the late 1800's. There are a few temple caves at the site, but the most spectacular is the main cave which is dedicated to Murugan, the god of war. A 150 ft golden statue of Murugan guards the 272 colourful steps to the MASSIVE Temple Cave. Don't let the steepness of the steps deter you, it's worth the (at times) white knuckle and (always) sweaty climb. There's delicious local fare to be had during the visit and plenty of pigeons to feed. We did eventually find the monkeys hanging out in the jungle around the caves and cheekily stealing bananas in the car park. The energy, colours and exotic beauty of this destination will capture your imagination and keep your finger on the record button. Don't forget to dress respectfully for your visit.
