Great to see two of the games I designed and programmed on this tribute video: MoonMine and Hopper.
Whoa, THE John Phillips? I recall your name. Dude, I loved Moon Mine. I only wanted the best games and anything with cool 3D fit the bill. Played my fair share of Hopper too! What else did you program? I own about 90 carts and probably have other titles you wrote.
Yeah those were fun days and fun games. Here's link to the complete catalog I programmed: www.99er.net/jphillips.html
Moon Mine was first out of the chute when I went to work for TI in Lubbock, TX. Some of my favorites are Munchman II, Beyond Space (originally named Beyond Parsec), Star Trap (originally named Star Wars like the movie), and Strike Three! Hopper was a blast, too. It was modeled after a coin-op game named Pengo. 4A Flyer was a biotch to program in 8K or ROM, but I like the dogfight mode I threw in there for kicks.
John Phillips I most certainly do have Munchman II which is great. Not even the Pac Man series had a double wide maze at the time. (mind blown) I played 4A Flyer for kicks. Beyond Parsec isn't what I thought it would be. If I could only find someone to play it with me. I tried playing against myself to little avail.
Did you know the woman who did the voices in Parsec? I think I looked her up once.
John Phillips I found 4A Flyer to be super slow to the point of being unusable.
Dude, I loved Hopper! I played that game for hours!
I haven't seen some of these graphics in at least 20 years, and I still remember them. Seeing this takes me back to my childhood, when my dad had a TI-99. I loved Car Wars, Hunt the Wumpus, and Alpiner.
This was my first gaming console, I actually had one of these before I had an NES. Such a great system at the time. Back then the TI-99 was the pinnacle of technology.
The sad part is I had most of those games. Tunnels of doom was close to being a first person shooter. The TI was a good system for its day
I remember buying a joystick called slik stick and that allowed me to play for hours!! Parsec and MoonMine, classics. My tan Ti994a from JC Penny was on clearance and my parents bought it not knowing how that machine inspired me. I loved basic coding with TI basic, just endless possibilities. I still have some cartridges laying around. Great stuff guys!
Same here, mine started a lifelong gaming hobby. So many fond memories.
Wish I'd never given away my TI99-4A. Loved playing QBert and Parsec.
Ya Applemctom, I did not expect you to have this console in your collection of videos - but I am very glad you do! Thanks man. For me the TI-99 is also known as the Only console game system my father used to play with me! Good X'ms. HEY also did anyone else who owned this console hear while playing Parse that occasionally (it wasn't that bad) the console would freeze up and make a crazy high-pitched odd sound!?!? I still remember that sound to this very day LOL. Ya the TI-99 made for some GREAT memories back in the day
Wow, thank you for taking the time to share that!
My grandma had a ti 99 hooked up in her game room when I was kid. Loved it
Awesome! I had about 1/3 of these and now I want them again!
Awesome. My dad & I used to play the crap outta Munch Man in the 80s. He busted so many controllers because he applied so much force when trying to get away from all those little baddies. We made up weird names for them all along the way. So much fun.
The screen play of TI Invaders here shows an awesome player’s game... that’s a high level!
Parsec and Tunnels of Doom were my go to games on the TI. My preferences haven't changed after all these decades. Space and RPG games are still my go to games.
This takes me back to my early pre elementary school days lol
The first computer we had in the family! Played Munch-Man and Indoor Soccer a lot! Had forgotten about CarWars and Tombstone City. Think we had Tunnels Of Doom too but hated it (at the age of 7 or 8) or maybe I am mixing it up with a similar C=64 game. 🕹📺👾
the graphics on certain games had me believing there were more than 16 colors on this system. Since three of those colors are black, white and TRANSPARENT, that really blows my mind.
You can also get TI stuff from TheOldCOmputer (Google it), although the cartridges don't seem to be named properly for use in Classic99. Also, you'll have to register to download.
The TI-99/4A was my first computer and I had most of the games shown in the video. My computer was the black/stainless one, but I always wanted the later one that was beige.
Anyway, nice video.
Hey, no Dungeons and Dragons or B-17 Bomber?
Great video. Lots of classics listed here. One of my favorites was Microsurgeon.
What’s the name of the MIDI in this?
Google for Classic99. It's a TI99/4A emulator and should be the second result.
For the games, go to 99er dot net, click on Download > Emulators > Emulator Utilities > TIMRaD and download that. The game cartridges are in the MODULES directory. Most of the cartridges come in 2 files.
Run Classic99, go to the Cartridge menu, go down to User and select Open, then double-click on any of the cartridge files to run the game.
I remember playing football and A-Maze-Ing when I was about 4 or 5. We have come a long way since then.
I was a Parsec addict back in the day.
I remember it a tennis game that great on the TI 99 but let's not forget to runner.
Cool 16-bit in 1979.
Honorable mentions:
Alligator Mix / Dragon Mix
Legends / Legends II
Moon Patrol; Ms Pac-Man (can't leave these out if you are including Pac Man and Donkey Kong!)
I think I had all of the 20 in the video except the 2 sports ones and Space Bandits.
Where is Microsurgeon? Absolutely the most mind-blowing TI994a game ever created. The concept, graphics, sound, multiple screens, and detail were unmatched. My jaw drops every time I even think this game came out when it did.
I have been playing video games for over 40 years and I still rank Microsurgeon as one of the most impressive video games ever made.
Microsurgeon showcased the power of 16-bit technology long before the SNES or Genesis. It was only available on Intellivision and TI-99/4A -- both 16-bit systems.
Dude, rocking the SkyShark music!
Thanks Christina Lafferty! you rock!
one note is that the song was from the NES skyshark not the MAME version or some other version. (this caused me some confusion)
Yeah NES is the only one i know of
My first Computer, great games at the time.
Oh god wumpus game scared the crap out of me when I was a kid I loved it but it scared me for some reason
There is a version for Android if that's any good for you :)
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tcksoft.wumpus
Andrew Pointon oh nice I might check it out thanks man :-)
Andrew Pointon oh nice I might check it out thanks man :-)
Ha Ha. Same here!
wait a second... I used to program and play on the TI994A and the Commodore .... the Commodore struggled with a faithful port of stuff like Packman and donkeykong but the TI had better renditions of both???
I swear this system was way more powerful than people thought. I used to play a game similar to tunnels of doom but it was more generic? not so graphical? it was a 3d maze with text based encounters.
I agree. My friends had Atari 800 and C64 and would come to my house all the time to play TI99. My uncle had the disk drive and Tunnels of Doom. Just wish it had more titles. That was the only setback. The game crash did a ton of damage to home computers which is very unfortunate.
munch man
Chisholm trail
football
parse
wumpus
and possibly one or two more you had on screen I remember we owned but I didn't know pacman, donkey Kong or qbert were available on it. parse was a personal favorite of mine, car wars we owned too, but parse with that voice box was just it for me...lol
How does Q*bert look so good on the TI-99?
3rd party devs made games that pushed the limits further. Imagic had way better versions of their games on Ti994a then on Intellevision, Atari, or Colecovision.
Just got one of these for free today. Now I wanna start collecting games for it.
You will wand to go to the link below for sure!
You'll be able to download HUNDREDS for free games and other programs.
atariage.com/forums/forum/164-ti-994a-computers/
Be sure to check out the link on the FlashROM 99 too!
How the hell could you possibly forget about thief? I still have it on cassette. Great job tho.
Car Wars, A-Maze-Ing, Parsec, Chisholm Trail, Alpiner, Moon Mine, and Hopper... Childhood.
Parsec and Munch-Man for me!
nice vid and great music too! can anyone tell me the name of the song? Thanks!
Lol just read the previous comment! thanks Christina lafferty!
one note is that the song was from the NES skyshark not the MAME version or some other version. (this caused me some confusion)
Hunt for wumpus scared the crap of of me with I was younger. I loved this I wish I still had it.
Parsec: the name of a true classic.
bummed i didnt see my fav game in this video...bigfoot
A 16-bit CPU ment jack when the graphics hardware was so simple. But then this wasn't really a games system. Still cool.
Will Pitts The problem is when uneducated people hear "16 bits" they assume it will "look twice as good as 8 bit". In reality, the bitness of the CPU means jack because it's the graphics hardware doing the graphics. You could have a monster of a CPU ("512 bit") but without a graphics circuit or graphic functions it won't even be able to output a picture.
no jawbreaker? or that one with the mouse where you had to get the cheese?
A-Maze-Ing was on that list.
This thing was technically a 16bit system
Not a single mention of Scott Adam's text-based games...
Pac-Man said Atari on the screen 😂!!!
Rad!!!!!!!!
These deserve at least a mention:
Bigfoot
Protector II
Sewermania
Slimoids
Shamus
Star Runner / TI Runner
The Adventure module and all it's games
Miner 2049er
Arturus
Espial
Driving Demon
Blasto
On disk:
Spotshot
Angler Dangler
Mission X
Barrage
Cannonball Blitz
Oh and MICROSURGEON! That belongs near if not at the top!
yeah, Shamus was great.
Microsurgeon was beyond awesome. It should have been something revolutionary in gaming. Especially the TI99 version that dwarfed the Intellevison version.
Nice Song ! :-)
Is there a law - written or unwritten - that says that Top Something videos *must* have a soundtrack that drives 95% of its viewers crazy? 🙉😫🔇
Actually, the law says it's 96%. So I'm glad I managed to make it under that percentage!
@@applemctom L😅L! 👻
i have parsec
Same, I got the TI-99 emulator just for Parsec.. Still holds up as a great game even today.
I remember having to MASH that fire button so hard on my controller.
@@danoz25 where can you download it
What's the name of the song?
Anyone know what the music is, whom its by etc
The music sounds very familiar. Like a game from regular Nintendo.
+Amanda P Garza whatever its from it is great
+Amanda P Garza thanks
+Jimmy N13
Your welcome. I had to think for some time about it.
It was from a game called Sky Shark, a kinda-WWII inspired vertical shooter. I played the hell out of that game in my NES.
You're welcome. I know most people still prefer the real thing, but emulation is easy and cheap and you can always buy the real thing later if you want. :)
What about all of the Scott Adams Adventure titles which were incredible, not to mention Return to Pirate's Isle which had some of the best graphics for the TI-99/4A. Not everyone can agree on these lists, but you skipped an entire genre :)
IIRC, those came on a single cassette...I remember ordering it, and it sure took its sweet time getting to me...4-6 weeks, more like 4-6 months...
+cubaneight The TI 99/4A was the first place I ever encountered them. We bought the games on cartridge for our VIC-20. So many hours wasted on those weird puzzles!
Neither of those games pushes the 16bit cpu to it's limit,it's time for homebrewers to make games for it wich pushes the graphics and sound chip as well as the cpu chip sooo hard to their limit that it will come close to standard sega genesis quality games, because i know it has the potential.
EDIT as of 2023 am astonished that popeye wasn’t included in this top 20 list,oh well atleast donkeykong did made the cut into that list and if all nintendo fans will ever buy a ti99 along with those two mentioned nintendo games, then they can pretend their ti99 to be a nintendo product as well😁🤣
You don't know shiiitt.....
GigBy Din, ever heard of the Geneve 9640? I'm pretty sure that you can make stuff on it that is at least comparable with the NEC pc engine.
Someone made a perfect flappy bird for it and its amazing.
What the heck was the name of the game where touching the walls was like electric and killed you and you had to find keys to advance?
Maybe Shamus?
@@NeilLoehlein that's the one!!! Had to look up a video to confirm!!
@@firestorbucket Nice! Yeah, I used to have that game back in the day. Fun to play…easy to get lost. :)
Parsec is a great game
SKY shark soundtrack!!!! Probably the Best 8bit songs ever
I expected the TI99/4a to have better game graphics/play than my Atari 800. Sorry but the games I've seen here are disappointing. The sprites seem slow and sometimes flicker. Perhaps there are better games out there and this video is not accurate.
60 fps? jajajajaja
Along with the Dragon32/64 this must be the worst home computers of 1982-84 when it comes to games. They all look rather bad, with the graphics standing out as particularly bad. Maybe its OK for text based stuff, but graphics... nah.
Graphics suck but gameplay is the shit dude
@@goldwolf0606 Yes sometimes the gameplay doesnt get in the way of shitty graphics. I never played anything on this machine so I have to take your word for it.
