Hey guys, I got those Space Shuttle prints last year at Comic-Con, from artist Kevin Dart. You can find more of his stuff here: kevindart.tumblr.com/ Higher-res samples of those prints here: www.frenchsampleroom.com/?sampleroom_sample=construction-recycled-white-4
I know this is an old “Tested” video, Noem, but I just recently purchased a afforable heavily modified/modded Playmates Toys STTNG tricorder that has been modded inside and outside to more closely match the actual 3rd season and later, STTNG tricorder prop. Has a more current and complete electronics kit, lights all the lights on the opening, lower door/control panel, too! It has all moving LED lights ( even for the main, inside screen ) and all accurate sound effects! Uses a reed switch in the casing to activate all the electronics! The only sound effect missing is the lower door “racheting” sound, when that lower door is being closed upwards. The external case has been cleaned up/puttied, of any extraneous seams, sanded, gray primer-ed and finished painted ( Tamiya for all plastics, metallic/metalflake dark gray ) the top, outside scanner lights panel has been painted a gloss black to allow the active LEDs to really pop! The bottom panels/sufacea of this toy tricorder have been painted in a matte black color. This is a full toy to near prop replica quality/accuracy conversion and looks incredible and all the functioning electronics are just fantastic! I even ordered/purchased a custom, well 3D printed and assembled, belt/pants waistband compatible holster that I thinly lined with some paint protective microfibre fabric, to mostly protect the custom finished paint job on this replica STTNG tricorder. This STTNG tricorder with custom holster all just looks incredible!
Haha! Love this review. I actually bought two of these tricorders I love them so much. People here complaining about the price of these. If you look around, you can find them for as low as $360. But quite frankly, they're worth the full price. They are really quality made and the heavy metal case is phenomenal. If you made one yourself, they're not cheap and the time it takes to make one alone would be worth the price of one of these.
Wow! I used to have the Playmates Tricorder! Oh man so much of my childhood has been lost over the years... I REALLLY want one of these so bad! Going to look on ebay for the retrofitted playmates one now!
Man, have times changed. I got that Playmates TriCorder and fooled around with it a bit. Making blinkie circuits on your own was a real chore. Now, internet at the ready, there's info all over the place. But this really cool-- die-cast huh? Yeesh. Nice, Norm.
I just rewatched the props dreamlist episode last night and wondered if you guys had found any of your dream props, and here we go! Nice! I remember the feeling when I got my Force FX Darth Vader Lightsaber..such a great feeling!
That is super badass. My dream star trek prop would have to be O'Brian's tool box from DS9....I have the case for it already, got to modify the insides and then actually build all of his tools
Can you guys do like a prop sonic screwdriver video? Maybe try and make one? They are actually a challenge and I think it'd be great to see you guys make one!
www.tricorderproject.org/tricorder-mark2.html This is a really cool project. I've been thinking of building my own version of it, replacing most of the circuitry with a Raspberry Pi, but I could probably use a lot of his code
Hey Norm. YOU ARE AWESOME! keep doing what you are doing man. Your personality and the way you talk is very inspiring to me. Hope that didnt come off as weird lol. I just wish i could speak as well as you
I think what we're all starting to discover is that Norm has a decent on-air persona, when he's able to go solo. Not a slam against Will but when they're together it always seems like they're trying to 'one-up' each other with seniority and/or wit.
Not only is it overpriced, but looks pretty bad, too. The build quality on this looks horrible. Pause it at 2:40 and notice how the stickers aren't even lined up properly. Some of them even look like they're too big for the indentation they're placed in, or seem to have excess material on the edges from the original sheet they were cut out of. This looks like something that should be priced at $100 tops, not $500.
I'm actually a little disappointed they didn't just put a ratcheting mechanism in the hinge instead of making it a sound played by the speaker. And for that price, they could have made it actually do something (like change to the 'detecting' sound when you face some arbitrary direction). For $200 you can pick up a flawless reproduction of a Sonic Screwdriver, and it also functions as a remote control...
This updated Tricorder doesn't have the ability like the earlier ones to turn off the sound when you want to. The sound effects going on way too long and way too loud. Nor does it have any interactive buttons. I'm glad I've had a review of this by others so as to save my money of what could have been a great prop.
***** It always depends on budget - true. I find it cool that there is even a market for such high quality movie replicates. It shows how much pop culture is actual culture and so on. But surely - I´m not into this market. But it is lovely that things like this exist. I mean: Some movie replicates from now are better fit for purpose then their originals that is just lovely.
For that price, you could buy a smartphone and download an app to give atmosphere readings. This is just for those kids who bought the toy and grew up rich. Nice piece, but lets not kid ourselves. $499 is ridiculous.
DOES ANYONE REMEMBER... In the mid 90's the official star trek magazine was selling for $300 a working tricorder, and I mean WORKING!! it did not have the lower flip piece and in fact was shaped like a thick small tablet but it could measure light, barometric pressure, atmospheric moisture, electrical fields and even deadly radiation among other abilities. I have not been able to find it, though i have yet to scan through star trek magazines.
I prefer the Tricorder that Seven of Nine uses in the VOY episode Relativity. The one that's from the 29th century. That one was really thin and it looked like a high-tech piece of technology. The Mark 9s just seemed far too chunky. Alternatively I also really liked the ENT Tricorder / scanner for the same reason, it looked small enough to be from the future. Even the TOS tricorders had a sort of retro-future styling to them, but the TNG/VOY/DS9 Tricorders just seemed too chunky. But it's nice to see one properly up close with all the lights and all. It doesn't reveal how you're meant to get any information from it though.
This seems exactly the same as the limited edition efx tricorders. I have an efx and I can't see any different at all, only the efx comes with a plaque signed by brent spiner and they are all numbered (only 600 made I think.) It's too bad that neither has button sound FX though.
The ones Mike and Steve made for set didn't have sound. These look identical to the EFX that came out a few years back. Did Rod buy up all their old stock?
A handheld scanning scanning, computing, and recording device capable of determining the complete molecular structure of nearly anything it is used on. I'd imagine that in the event of a disruption of subspace it just becomes a glorified spectrometer...
I know it is a prop, but i am a tad bit disappointed at the fit of the flip cover. most flip phones are much better fit. Might be interesting to make a modified version with a tighter fit and finish more like something that might actually be made in the future.
A working tricorder was made some years ago. It was called the Tricorder Mark I. I was in the room (at a local SF con) where one of these was presented to Majel who was one of the GoHs that year. You can see some info about the Mark I here -> treknostalgia.blogspot.com/2009/04/trek-tech-tricorder-mark-1.html I was
Bought this in September 2016 almost $1000 with shipping & CDN exchange. On arrival the screen stenciling was lifting from the face. Emailed them right away they told me to glue it down and referred me to their community message board. You cant see the lights or hear the sound unless you have batteries in it and open it so I installed some batteries and not wanting to put it on display with batteries in that could leak, I used it till the batteries died. Today I dropped a new set of batteries in it to show it to a friend and the lights in the bottom "Flip out" part weren't working any more. A tiny wire in the hinge had been made too short and ripped completely in half UNDER the hing mechanism. Roddenberry's response to this $1000 purchase.. "Yeah you have a loose wire but you no longer have any warranty!" I know NOT using it defeats the purpose of having lights and sound but DON'T use it. They have very poor paint adhesion, The edge sensor area has surface decals that rub off real easy, the plastic color displays won't stay down and its very easy to break!
Ever since I was a kid I wanted a tricorder myself. About 15 years ago, some dude from germany was supposed to send me a Playmates TNG Tric but that never happened :/
So Norm is a huge TNG fan... a man after my own heart! Hands down TNG is my favorite of all the Treks
Of course!
It's very nice to see that you're very enthusiastic about these things.

I really like the Medical Tricorder, with it's little secondary hand scanner for more indepth medical scanning that stows on the top

Sweet
That sound when it opens is an endorphin rush. The tricorder at work is one of my all-time favorite sound effects.

Those shuttle prints are awesome.
I've honestly never been a Star Trek fan, but when Norm opened up the Tricorder, even I thought it was pretty badass.

That's just beautiful!
I really hope Peter Jensen completes his TriCorder project... he should kick starter it...
Amazing piece, i have made one of these kits but with no lighting, always wanted this always....feel just the same as you Norm!!
I just rewatched the props dreamlist episode last night and wondered if you guys had found any of your dream props, and here we go! Nice! I remember the feeling when I got my Force FX Darth Vader Lightsaber..such a great feeling!
My favorite Star Trek prop, the mark IX tricorder is so popular that these replicas now go for 2-4x the original price.
Norm, you make Star Wars props interesting to a guy who doesn't even watch Star Wars.
I must have missed the Star Wars props...
Shea Doherty Oops
djokawari
A classic epic fail, lol, mixing up Star Wars and Star Trek.
djokawari biggest mistake on the internet. confuse star trek for star wars.
Haha, good one
Tested/Norm: Where did those Space Shuttle framed prints come from? Those are beautiful. I NEED THEM.
Very nice tricorder the thing is totally cool I'm re-watching deep space 9 right now on Netflix
That is super badass. My dream star trek prop would have to be O'Brian's tool box from DS9....I have the case for it already, got to modify the insides and then actually build all of his tools
I love the giant Isopod plush on His couch!

Can you guys do like a prop sonic screwdriver video?
Maybe try and make one? They are actually a challenge and I think it'd be great to see you guys make one!
I made my own years ago, but that one is better!
Very cool!
Now I want a working tricorder!

That sound. It's just right.
It looks great and would love to have one... but $500 for a metal/plastic handheld with stickers and some LED lights is WAY overpriced.
Not only is it overpriced, but looks pretty bad, too. The build quality on this looks horrible. Pause it at 2:40 and notice how the stickers aren't even lined up properly. This guy died way too young. He was my favorite cast member on MythBusters. RIP.
Great clip as always even though I'm not a startrek fan. Keep up the good work.

Perhaps there was not enough space internally for a dedicated ratcheting joint (that is also loud enough to hear), because of all the internal wiring.
Nerd-gasm when ya opened the tricorder LOL Great Vid!!
This is the first time Norm looks almost happy on Tested.
awesome Norm
you should do a show and tell on that awesome captain america shield
R.I.P lernard nimoy

I've never seen Star Trek but I really enjoy this type of video. That's a fantastic prop.
2:39 That product stamp at the bottom would look at home on a Commodore 128.
I would really like to see Adam build a tricorder.
Cool! I love tricorders!
You showed a photo of Data with a Mark VII (from Star Trek: Generations) when referencing a Mark IX.
I wonder if you'd want to install a Scio sensor in one, or use it in conjunction with this. So fun!
thats a great book on you left norm my brother got me one for my birthday

I'm going to be 37 this year, and I must has this
$499 is a pretty reasonable price imo. Great share!

Damn $500 and the sticker on the bottom part wasn't even lined up correctly.
kornskydiver For that price I would expect it to detect tachyon surges.
Norm has the best toys!!!
ive always wanted one of these
And just $438.99 on Amazon as of now, May 2016. A lot, but it sure does look great.
why not the medical tricorder with the separate spinning lit spool thing that you use to scan the patient?
Do the buttons do anything?? Is it only open=on and closed=off?
do they make a medical tricorder as well?
Wasn't there one with a removable sensor on top???
That would be the Medical Tricorder, which had an extended length to accomodate the extra hand-held sensor and a different lighting pattern.

Best Handprop... EVER!
I loved this!
The tricorder from TOS seems a lot more iconic.
4:06 I'm getting abnormal readings from this couch Captain.
Hey Norm why dont you get a interview from the guy with the tricorder project?
The "Emg" button dumps all readings taken to the ship. Source: Star Trek TNG Technical Manual.

Amazing.
Coolest hand prop ever made - Alien: motion tracker
Fantastic. My geek gland is swollen.
Could you do a tour of your man cave there?
I have to say. The iconic version I would expect to be the one from the original series.
Maybe it's a generational thing though, ey?
Excellent. You forgot the obvious question, though: how much?
What happened to the shop? It's disappeared. Really want this tricorder. Guess that's impossible now 🙁
Norm,
Where did you get the Space Shuttle orbiter posters? I have to have some of those!
A handheld scanning scanning, computing, and recording device capable of determining the complete molecular structure of nearly anything it is used on. I'd imagine that in the event of a disruption of subspace it just becomes a glorified spectrometer...
Does anybody know where can I get posters like those in the background? They're awesome!
Where did you get that Captain America shield? I've been wanting one for a long time. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
RIP Leonard Nemoy
Pls tell us the source of the holster...
Looks awesome. Also, does anyone know where one can buy the space shuttle posters on the wall behind norm?
That is so cool!!
Are the walls the old studio colour?
not too shabby!
Ok have to admit that's pretty cool.
Anyone know where he got the space shuttle prints hanging on the wall?
NIce shuttle prints!
What did that military surplus holster carry in the real world?
I know it is a prop, but i am a tad bit disappointed at the fit of the flip cover. most flip phones are much better fit. Might be interesting to make a modified version with a tighter fit and finish more like something that might actually be made in the future.

Hi Tested ;)
I have one tricorder, but this is from Master Replicas 1/1. Greetings.
Can anyone tell me where norm got those awesome batman and robin figures?
I NEED to know where I could find those Batman and Robin figurines.
how do you open that door?
You should get the medical tricorder next.
Ever since I was a kid I wanted a tricorder myself. About 15 years ago, some dude from germany was supposed to send me a Playmates TNG Tric but that never happened :/
Ooooooooooooooooohhhhh yes! I want one of those. God!
I been looking around at these now . They are going for 1000 bucks. Very cool though.
I used to watch this british ghost-hunting show, "Most Haunted." I am 99% sure I saw them using a Next Gen tricorder to sense for ghosts. Seriously.
Them portal book stands in the bottom left of the room...
