    Been riding for close to 5 years, went from 300lbs obese guy to 210 fit guy with monster calves lol. Did mountain bike 1st with shocks, switched to hybrid performance for last 3 years and after breaking 2 frames from riding hard in pothot city (montreal), i switch to steel frame single speed. My free wheel eventually broke and i started riding fixed. 5 months later, i don't think i can go back to a non-fixed bike.
    I always thought people were pretentious with their fixed gear stories how it's so much better blah blah blah.... well, i finally get it. It's harder, tougher because you have to earn your speed and earn your braking but it is so satisfying and feels so much more visceral, like the bike is part of you. I also feel very proud of myself as a 35yo former fat guy to have made it to this level when i am constantly smoking everyone on their expensive bikes, and i hear them shift speeds when i pass them but they can never catch up to me, amazing feeling from a former fatty =).
    These bikes are amazing!! Bamboo bike are you kidding me? Awesome!

    • @albr4
      @albr4 5 років тому +17

      @@DatBaataR It seems like a really bad idea to have wide bars in a crit race, just more likely to catch on other riders and crash, and less aerodynamic aswell but I guess they're not going too fast around that tiny track.

    • @dc8890
      @dc8890 5 років тому +3

      @@albr4 Exactly, that's what surprises me, not the fact they're flat necessarily, but that they're so wide. Surely in a crit race you need to find gaps and navigate around people so wide bars seems weird.

    • @SamuelBlackMetalRider
      @SamuelBlackMetalRider 4 роки тому

      It’s because of the Bike Messenger culture. Haven’t you noticed that MANY riders were in jeans & sweaters or tshirts? Such races are all about skills. And you turn better in super tight corners with such flat bars. I’ve seen riders winning such specific races with flat bars over drops

  • @Heavywall70

    My favorite thing about riding a fixed gear is the incredibly low amount maintenance needed.
    I ride daily and apart from keeping air in the tires and checking chain tension
    Maintenance is virtually zero.
    I don’t care about weight, I want durability, 4130 frame and fork, double wall rims (steel of course) KMC chain, and rolling on Gators.
    Nothing fancy at all. Just a go machine.

    • @albr4
      @albr4 5 років тому +12

      @@mklightemup3567 most of the fixed gear riders you see on the streets are only riding it because it's trendy, they don't actually do it for performance and don't push hard on them. I ride with a 52 on front and 16 on back and cycle at about 24 mph average in the city and up to 30mph when I go out of the saddle. For me I'm passing all the road cyclists with full pro outfit and carbon road bikes, they just can't keep up. The only time someone on a road bike can go faster than me is up hills because my gear is too big.
