Pesticides are chemicals used to control, prevent, or eliminate pests like fungi, bacteria, insects, rodents, or plants. They can also act as soil stabilisers for nitrogen. When pesticides, which are substances meant to manage a pest, hurt non-target creatures like people, animals, plants, or bees, it is known as pesticide poisoning. Three different kinds of pesticide poisoning exist. The first of the three is a single, very brief, very high degree of exposure that both those who commit suicide and those who create pesticides can experience. Long-term high-level exposure, which can happen in pesticide producers and formulators, is the second type of poisoning.
The third type of poisoning is long-term low-level exposure, which people can get from a variety of sources, including contact with pesticide residues in the air, water, soil, sediment, food, plants, and animals, as well as exposure to pesticide residues in food and contact with them in these environments. Pesticide poisonings from short-term, very high levels of exposure (acute poisoning) are the most concerning type of poisoning in developing nations like Sri Lanka. The situation is entirely different in wealthy countries like Canada, where acute pesticide poisoning is managed and long-term low-level pesticide exposure is the primary concern.
