Based on the MITB briefcase that squirted slime and the exploding TV, I think Vince McMahon's booking of Dean Ambrose was inspired by Nickelodeon and Looney Tunes Acme Corporation respectively.
A sad, lonely, Vince, in a dimly lit office, watching that episode of Double Dare with Gorilla and The Brain on a ten dollar television that still has knobs and dials.
Small correction, the Battleground match with the Rhodeses was just a 2v2, Reigns and Rollins vs. Cody and Goldust. Ambrose was managing the Shield the same way Dusty was managing his sons.

For real tho, 2015-2019 WWE was just so bad for Dean. Creative could have absolutely booked him in the title picture for YEARS had it been headed by Hunter. If he ever decides to come back, I hope they give him the Cody treatment. "Death Rider" Jon Moxley can work in the WWE space, he's already proved more than enough that he can hang with the legends of NJPW.
@@heyyoitsmebrian Nah, 2016 was one of the company's best years creatively. Smackdown during the first 7 months of the brand split was must-watch, and Raw wasn't too bad either. How? I get if you're poking at certain storylines. But with how you've worded your comment, it'd be as if he won NO titles. When at a point, he went from Money in the bank, to WWE title, to IC title, to then tag titles, and tag titles again, then the IC title again. Again, I get his last story was poor. But he was constantly in title pictures. Stuff that some wrestlers could only dream of. Beforehand, I'd say yeah, it looks bad. But during that run, he was constantly involved in title, after title.
Looking back, it really is kind of amazing that he lasted as long as he did within the WWE system considering hie style on the indies, shows they saw value in him, just not nearly as much as they did with Roman or Seth. And it's also a credit to him being able to adjust for as long as he did. He is living his best life now and I think it wa important to highlight the good and bad. We'll see him again in WWE when they do the HoF induction for The Shield in however many years, but I do not ever see a full in ring return for him.
When you look back at his CZW tapes etc. it's completely insane he was ever considered employable by the company at all. His resume is absolutely not what they typically look for or want. I would be interested to know what the behind-the-scenes negotiations were like to bring him in and spit-shine him for Vince's appraisal.
He signed a massive contract renewal last Fall and even has an official behind the scenes role in AEW now. Definitely do not expect to ever see him inside a WWE ring again until that induction.

From what I remember the reason why Ambrose acted the way he did on the Stone Cold podcast was because he really couldn't talk about what he really wanted to. Like his last drug abuse and all that bc he was the face of WWE at the time and he knew the higher ups wouldn't have been happy about that.
Man, Dean Ambrose post-Shield run was weird, wasn’t it? P.S. Who had the most boring championship reign? Dean Ambrose U.S. Championship or Brother Devon’s TNA Television Championship?
With how great Mox has been in AEW, it is safe to say WWE really dropped the ball with him. He has become the undisputed ace of the company and is the guy they call upon when shit hits the fan. His debut at Double or Nothing took the wrestling world by surprise and his various feuds with Kenny and Jericho have really shown what he is capable of.
I really believe that the night the shield was supposed to break up the way went down backstage was Vince to Roman & Seth: "OK after this break-up going forward you two I'm going to be my top guys" Dean: And me? Vince: yeaaa, we'll find something for ya, Pal 🤷🏾♂️
I graduated high school on the day of MITB 2016. I feel a kinship with Mox/Ambrose because we both had a great day that kicked off a run of disappointment and frustration _on the very same day_
That C.M. Punk sound bite at 3:42 would be even better if Brian Zane was able to attach the clip of Bret Hart saying "Shadup" from Wrestling Bios Reliving the War series.
My first wrestling show was WrestleMania in 2017, so I didn’t know anything about Ambrose prior to that until listening to his book (which he narrates) I had no idea about the whole Mick Foley thing until the book, and man that (and everything else in there) just made me appreciate the man so much more than I already did.
With regards to the stone cold podcast thing, that one honestly isn't on Moxley; he explicitly told the producers he did NOT want to talk about childhood/personal life, and they straight up just _didn't tell Austin._
Dean Ambrose is like the awkward middle evolution of a starter Pokemon. Is in between the novelty of the first years of Moxley, and the fully realised main eventer Jon Moxley of AEW.
Current Moxley has no dimensions to his character or his matches. Jon Moxley on the Indies had a fleshed out character with dynamic promos, telling really interesting stories. He was a believable character of an unhinged guy who had a tough upbringing. He is now just a recovering alcoholic who has replaced booze with razor blades and thinks he's Stone Cold.
@@jackhughes7637 Yeah I agree, one has to wonder if he has any passion left. LIke he will say he does, but his work has been awful for a year and half. He doesn't sell, he doesn't cut promos. He just runs a group with no purpose...
Yeah I don’t understand why they treated Dean how they did. Especially towards the end. Like I’ve never seen a company try so hard to make someone look bad.
For what it's worth, the fans refused to boo him despite the nonsense booking he received towards the end. Surely didn't help that AEW was preparing to launch at the same time and there were lots of rumors of some WWE talent wanting out before Double or Nothing that year.
The night Ambrose/Mox won the world Title at MITB was one of the Greatest Nights in TV history: MITB where all Members of the Shield held the Title on the same night, Game 7 Warriors-Cavs where it came down to the final minute and Game of Thrones Battle of the Bastards episode. WHAT. A. NIGHT

The segment where Dean puts slime in the mitb briefcase was only funny because of the look on deans face after the slime shoots out of the briefcase. Priceless 😂
Man time flies. I remember when the shield was new, they mainly just let Moxley talk because the others still weren't that great on the mic, but he was great...Time flies.
Ambrose was my favorite member of the shield, I always wanted him to have a big WrestleMania moment, but it never came. It's a stretch, but hey, maybe one day.
I think an argument can be made that Ambrose/Moxley is the best at being a face of the three members of The Shield He’s just so fun to watch in the ring and on the mic with his unhinged and risk taking character Roman and Seth both have the same problem of often being rather bland and repetitive at times, especially as faces Roman didn’t have the charisma that other heavily pushed main eventers had when he was a face Seth didn’t really have much going for him as a face until early 2018 when he introduced the Monday Night Rollins and Burn It Down stuff, but people got tired of that eventually Meanwhile, Ambrose’s only times as a heel in WWE were being part of The Shield and a very short run from late 2018 to the start of 2019 And has been a face for his entire AEW run if I am not mistaken
Its so weird that I was never a fan of Dean Ambrose in WWE, but I instantly became a fan of Jon Moxley when he left WWE in 2019. And man, did I forget about the potential Foley feud at the beginning.
Dean ambrose is the most blatant example of WWE holding back a wrestler by making him into something the company wanted him to be versus what he was capable of. Instead of making him the tough edgy jon moxley character they wanted to use him as comedy relief. It's really sad but at the end of the day it all worked out for him
To this day, I maintain that Dean should have been the one to turn first on SHIELD, to join the Wyatts. He had exactly the mindset and exactly the vulnerabilities Bray needed and wanted in a partner, and for the first months of their feud it seemed like Bray was mostly only interested in Dean and in promos & matches targeted him specifically. Bray & Dean had the most chemistry, too.
3:13 Mox said about this in his book, he was tweeting a bunch of stuff about Foley’s family, but he was abroad and didn’t have his phone, so like a day after he did it, he gets all these texts from Mick asking him to stop over the several hours it went on.
Mox/Dean is great. Sadly for me, he reminds me too much of a guy who was like 30 that showed up to some of my friend’s parties in high school. That’s all I’ve ever been able to think of when I see him
Hot take: I prefer Dean Ambrose. Jon Moxley is way into cutting his head open every week and having matches where he spends four minutes fighting outside the ring while the ref just stands there not counting.
He started having much better promos as Moxley but it also dialed up all of the wannabe stone cold mannerisms up another 100%. I'm not really into his work when he's too silly or hardcore.
That is a scaldingly hot take, and one I can’t take seriously. Much less hot, though, is your justification. Somebody should set up a swear jar, where you need to pay money every time you make a joke about Mox bleeding a lot.
The initial run of the Shield was so damn good. You can easily forget just how effective and believable they were as a unit. Especially in the six-man matches. But man, this brought back memories after the split and you can see faint glimmers of Mox in his run as Ambrose but it was just completely him being held back. All it took was to let him loose and look at his AEW run now. He's the damned heart of the place and it shows so much. I hope he gets that time off he was going to take before the All Out madness soon, dude has more than earned it.
I'll admit, his antics made me want to watch every week. I also compared him to Stone Cold because he did seem to be that rebel against the system like Steve was in his heyday. And even during the heel turn it felt like he his heart wasn't really in it. When they booked it to be that he was taking a sabbatical for a while, I thought he was being written off due to injury or he wanted some time away like some competitors have done in the past. Little did I know or expect him to show up in AEW where his talents have been showcased better. I do hope there is at least a little bit of a chance he returns to WWE, and like Cody Rhodes, is shown to be that main event tier talent he has always been.
I love these styles of videos when you focus on one person or topic and bring out some of the comedy. The program reviews are great, but these make me laugh :)
I'm not promoting another channel, I would like to see you do a collaboration with wrestling bios. You two are the only wrestling channels I can stand. With that being said you are #1 Mr. Zane. Thank you for the great content with a sense of humor.
As silly as it was, I do like Dean Ambrose silly moments, especially with Miz and Bray Wyatt. At least you got to meet his future wife Renee Paquette in the company as well as work with Bryan Danielson, Claudio Brodie Lee before coming to aew
The story of how Dean got Mitch the plant is great. Whatever arena they were In they went looking for a potted plant and found one in the offices. Thing is they didn’t know if they could take it or not so they just stole the plant and never returned it
Dean Ambrose was always my favorite in the Shield because he had the most charisma in the group. They practically buried him in WWE, but I was still a supporter of his, especially when he won the belt at MITB. Moxley now is one of my favorite modern wrestlers. Good that he's doing better for himself these days.
They never understood the appeal of Moxley's initial gimmick - the street kid with anger management issues and violent tendencies. Go watch some of his PWG promos to see how good he could be.
Counterpoint: We can't criticize WWE for having the Shield's 1st loss as a team come on a 'random episode of TV' when two other things we criticize the product (rightly for) are a lack of week-by-week plot advancement and no-long term storylines. At the time they lost, their storyline was 'What 3-man group in WWE can _possibly_ beat them?' Was Big Show, Orton and Sheamus a thrown-together team? Sure, but we already know WWE doesn't care about teams and will rank two World Champion team _members_ above an actual team. They'd beaten damn-near everyone on the mid-to-upper card and Orton, Bryan and Kane were their longest running feuds. Sure, it wasn't a pay-per-view, but it made that episode one of the few 'as good as a ppv' episodes that year; like Punk/Cena earlier that year.
Can't believe it's been 10 years since The Shield came into the fold. I was a huge fan of the group, Loved their debut TLC match against Kane, Bryan and Ryback and was happy to see them win belts! Wish the reign Dean had as a U.S Champ was treated better, but overall I was always a big fan of his time in WWE.
Moxley's whole wwe singles run can be defined as "relevant but *not really.*" Not a minor player but not treated with the same level of stardom as Seth, Roman, Cena, Styles, or Daniel Bryan.
In 2024, it’s wild seeing how the Shield trio has progressed: - Mox: A stable stalwart of AEW for the foreseeable future - Roman: Recently wrapped a generational title run and is poised to return as a mega babyface at Summerslam - Seth: Still over as a top face in WWE and had a big role in WrestleMania 40, even in defeat
I gotta be honest outside of his terrible heel run in 2018/2019 I really look back fondly of Dean Ambrose WWE run from the shield days to his babyface run. Was Dean a watered down version of Jon Moxlet yeah but he was very entertaining. I think he had a great career in WWE as part of The Shiekd & his singles run minus that last year. I do think they missed the boat with boat with him by not making him the guy in 2016 by not making him the guy he should of dethroned Triple H at the main event of WrestleMania 32 for WWE Championship as he was the most over guy in the company. While I am enjoying his AEW run assuming Trips stays in charge of creative in WWE I hope to see him back in the company some day
I always felt that we were told Dean was some kind of dangerous lunatic while being booked as a clown that lost a lot. how different the business could have been had they seen Roman not working and put their stock into Ambrose instead.

I was a huuuuuge Ambrose fan during this time. I was a teenager and freaked out when he won the MitB and the title
Honestly, being reminded how he was winless and just falling short for a while had me thinking how did I manage being an Ambrose fan for such a long time. I guess it just had to do with the fact he was my favorite member of the Shield and I believed in them pushing him to be a big name like Seth and Roman are right now. I feel like if the cards are played right and when Mox feels like it’s time to come back to the E, they can have the former trio face off one last time for the Tribal Chief’s championship and determine who is the true face of the Shield
He was more talented than Rollins and Reigns but wwe ignored him
Hearing some of his points just remind me how bad I wanted dean to win and he just wasn’t able too
Based on the MITB briefcase that squirted slime and the exploding TV, I think Vince McMahon's booking of Dean Ambrose was inspired by Nickelodeon and Looney Tunes Acme Corporation respectively.
A sad, lonely, Vince, in a dimly lit office, watching that episode of Double Dare with Gorilla and The Brain on a ten dollar television that still has knobs and dials.
Considering Vince's secret obsession with Mighty Mouse, that wouldn't surprise me.
Mox: are you callin me a liar?
Bray: i ain't callin you a truther!!
@@dr.snakes 😆😆
but it was SUCH GOOD SHIT, PAL!!
Small correction, the Battleground match with the Rhodeses was just a 2v2, Reigns and Rollins vs. Cody and Goldust. Ambrose was managing the Shield the same way Dusty was managing his sons.
You're one hundred percent right I was there Buffalo New York
That kick off with Foley was such a great way to bring him in.

That Stone Cold podcast appearance physically hurt. I got bummed out as they went along.
It still feels weird how, even in the 2010s, we still have to worry about VHS-level quality of videos. You can COUNT the pixels in that Foley/Ambrose stare-down. XD
That one was shot on a cell phone so that’s the main reason the video was bad.
@@thetribalist6923 Exactly. People got lazy in the 2010s, and early mobile technology wasn't great either, so now there's a decade of early 21st C. time where everything on video looks wonky and hard to watch and visually horrible because hardware hadn't caught up to file-sharing, streaming, multimedia transfer etc. It's weird, sometimes you'll find much higher and smoother quality transfers from pristine 90s/early 2000s tapes than you will from the late 200s/early mid 2010s.
Your average early 2010s cell phone quality wasn't that great. Most people had barely just started getting smart phones around that time.
After listening to mox's book, it gave me such an appreciation for him. He seems like a solid dude.
I liked Mitch The Plant. Dean sold it like "Fine I'll leave!" as he grabbed Mitch and kinda sadly walked away. I like the idea that he had no cool set so he spruced it up with a nice plant and took it with him when he got cancelled.
The way Jericho pissed and moaned about all the Mitch posts was gold.
Now I'm reminded about how Dean Ambrose really was a watered down version of Jon Moxley when he was in the WWE.
What WWE could have done for him instead of pushing Roman
@@ericthomas917 I wish he would have won the 2015 Rumble.

Moxley has seen what the WWE wanted to do for him and he left. He hated the WWE creative and the scripted BS. It has nothing to do with Roman.
As much as I wanted to see Dean Ambrose get to the top of WWE. I am glad he went to AEW, he going there has gotten me into watching AEW. I watch AEW now, and may not have without the intrigue of seeing an unleashed Moxley. Now I have discovered a whole new group of wrestlers like Starks, MJF, Jungle Boy, Acclaimed, Wardlow, Hobbs, Hangman, Omega, Bucks, Lucha Bros, Top Flight, Thunder Rosa, Hayter, Baker, and many more.
🔥
The Inter-Consulation title. I love it.
I loved the promos he was cutting in the shield with a quiet voice. Then when he was solo he wasn’t allowed to cut those Jake Robert’s type promos. He had to be crazy all the time.
2015 til the thunderdome ended was the absolute worst creative has been in the history of the wwe
@@heyyoitsmebrian Nah, 2016 was one of the company's best years creatively. Smackdown during the first 7 months of the brand split was must-watch, and Raw wasn't too bad either. Hell, I'd even say that things started getting good the night after Wrestlemania 32, with a fantastic Roman-Styles program for the belt as well as a great IC title scene shared between Miz, Zayn, Owens, and Cesaro.
@@aidanator8008 i think youre conflating "creative" with roster. just because the IC title scene has guys you like in it, doesnt mean that "creative" is good. there are def plenty of matches from 2016 that are amazing, but im not going to give "creative" any credit
Jon Moxley wouldn't work in wwe they wouldn't let him be himself at all thy would want him to turn it down
Between pay-per-view revisits and "Wild and Wacky Tails", I think you've got a whole new series of videos here, sir.
I think he gets inducted solo too. Probably won’t be the main event induction but I can’t think of a world champ that hasn’t gone in the Hall.
I was at WM32 and I remember the big screen told the crowd to chant “WHOOOOOO” during Charlotte’s match.

From what I remember the reason why Ambrose acted the way he did on the Stone Cold podcast was because he really couldn't talk about what he really wanted to. Like his last drug abuse and all that bc he was the face of WWE at the time and he knew the higher ups wouldn't have been happy about that.
very mature of him to act out because he couldn't talk about his drug abuse 🙄
That and they mentioned his childhood which he was not okay with so he shutdown

If I recall, Dean had 3 title defenses. He defended the title against Seth Rollins in a banger of a match on the Smackdown before the triple threat.
They fought for the title on both the Smackdown and Raw before Battleground, with the first one ending in a no contest after a double pin.
25:20
I hate how that’s not a random reaction clip. That is the actual on-screen explanation for Dean’s character regression.

I really believe that the night the shield was supposed to break up the way went down backstage was

My first wrestling show was WrestleMania in 2017, so I didn’t know anything about Ambrose prior to that until listening to his book (which he narrates)
I had no idea about the whole Mick Foley thing until the book, and man that (and everything else in there) just made me appreciate the man so much more than I already did.
That's a great way to put in. Jon Moxley was in that Wade Barret category in which he was a Charmeleon that would never be a Charizard.

WWE and Vince are petty like that, they even almost had Dean feud with Nia Jax for fucks sake

For what it's worth, the fans refused to boo him despite the nonsense booking he received towards the end. Surely didn't help that AEW was preparing to launch at the same time and there were lots of rumors of some WWE talent wanting out before Double or Nothing that year.
it is their typical character assassination when someone is WAY MORE POPULAR than their chosen one.
@@Venom-lr3sq it’s almost like they book good by accident and then try to fix it with bad booking 😂😂😂😂
WHAT. A. NIGHT
Dude, I LOVE these bio videos! You really dig deep and get to the nitty gritty and present it in an entertaining way. I know you work in TV, but have you ever done documentary work? It feels like you got a knack for it! Keep up the great work, BZ!
25:48 years later…we had no idea how long that list actually was
The funny thing is that foley back in ecw also tried to get over with an anti hardcore gimmick
Damn, Jon Moxley leaving WWE was the best thing that happened to him since the Shield.
Ambrose was my favorite member of the shield, I always wanted him to have a big WrestleMania moment, but it never came. It's a stretch, but hey, maybe one day.
The "shield reunion" gag you did was incredible
I think an argument can be made that Ambrose/Moxley is the best at being a face of the three members of The Shield
He’s just so fun to watch in the ring and on the mic with his unhinged and risk taking character
Roman and Seth both have the same problem of often being rather bland and repetitive at times, especially as faces
Roman didn’t have the charisma that other heavily pushed main eventers had when he was a face
Seth didn’t really have much going for him as a face until early 2018 when he introduced the Monday Night Rollins and Burn It Down stuff, but people got tired of that eventually
Meanwhile, Ambrose’s only times as a heel in WWE were being part of The Shield and a very short run from late 2018 to the start of 2019
And has been a face for his entire AEW run if I am not mistaken
Man, it’s so nice knowing that my Birthday will forever be overshadowed by Kane‘s obsession with it -.-
Its so weird that I was never a fan of Dean Ambrose in WWE, but I instantly became a fan of Jon Moxley when he left WWE in 2019.

It was a misunderstanding and he apologized to Mick and they are on good terms now
@@zarinshapurjee9430 Exactly. Mox even said he felt really bad because Mick thought he was just being an ass and ignoring him
Mox/Dean is great. Sadly for me, he reminds me too much of a guy who was like 30 that showed up to some of my friend’s parties in high school. That’s all I’ve ever been able to think of when I see him
And keeps trying to get the football players to punch him in the stomach to prove how tough he is.
Do you blame him for that ?
I remember watching him face Daniel Bryan at a WWE house show around 2010-2011 when Bryan had the MITB briefcase. That was fun!

Thing is they didn’t know if they could take it or not so they just stole the plant and never returned it
It was Jericho's idea to have a potted plant for his feud with Dean so they stole one from an office block at an arena

A lot of work must have gone into this. I enjoy the individual-focused content.
They never understood the appeal of Moxley's initial gimmick - the street kid with anger management issues and violent tendencies. Go watch some of his PWG promos to see how good he could be.
Mox is actually the closest to who Jon really is
Counterpoint: We can't criticize WWE for having the Shield's 1st loss as a team come on a 'random episode of TV' when two other things we criticize the product (rightly for) are a lack of week-by-week plot advancement and no-long term storylines.

In 2024, it’s wild seeing how the Shield trio has progressed:
- Mox: A stable stalwart of AEW for the foreseeable future
- Roman: Recently wrapped a generational title run and is poised to return as a mega babyface at Summerslam
- Seth: Still over as a top face in WWE and had a big role in WrestleMania 40, even in defeat
While I am enjoying his AEW run assuming Trips stays in charge of creative in WWE I hope to see him back in the company some day
My favourite part about mitch the potted plant is finding out it was entirely deans idea and it was a stolen plant
I always felt that we were told Dean was some kind of dangerous lunatic while being booked as a clown that lost a lot. how different the business could have been had they seen Roman not working and put their stock into Ambrose instead.
I always thought Ambrose was more comparable to Bugs Bunny than Stone Cold
That Stone Cold podcast was rough listening/viewing. Kind of felt like Mox was trying to be a good company boy and really censoring himself thus he came off as boring. If Austin were to interview him now it would probably be really great.
