    I run a 1 on 1 game with my wife. A year later, and she has 4 more party members. For us, the key is to have the DM (me) run the personalities of her party, but she runs them in combat. We are having fun, and it works out pretty well.

      If you ever see this, any tips you could give me? I'm about to start doing this with my fiancé so I'd like to hear how others handle things

      @@Matthew-Fair Sure--we haven't had the time to play too much lately, but the main practical challenge is remembering all the abilities of the different characters--so anything to make that easier/more accessible is really helpful when trying to run that many characters. I in character creation I took some liberties to streamline the companions a bit with abilities that compliment rather than overshadow my wife's character. My wife's character is a wizard, so one of the first characters was a fighter that could tank hits and has a special defensive ability to let my wife's character get her spells off in a battle. In terms of the characters personalities, I spent a lot of time thinking about what was connecting them to the party and to my wife's character in particular, trying to strike a balance between not having them just be lackies but also constructing them in a way where they won't overshadow my wife's characters abilities. Also, we added new characters to the party over time--that helped since we were both pretty new to D&D and it would be overwhelming to try to manage 5 characters right off the bat.

    As someone who is getting into DnD in regards to actually playing, I'll be DM'ing a game for my little brother. Picked up the essentials kit, and just making his character alone was fun for him, and he can't wait till we get to actually play. We shall see where his adventures go. (:

    I've done more one-on-one sessions than group sessions and as a DM I have to say I prefer it. I notice that some UA-camrs have to give reasons why one-on-one sessions occur, such as "only one player could make it" - I don't think excuses are needed. In many ways, it is much more challenging for the DM - you get no breaks, and you have to inject a lot more character and detail, so it is very good DM training. I still use the game rules, but I have some homebrew rules for one player. For D&D 5e it is quite easy to modify the rules: have the PC start at level 3 but do not call it level 3, call it level 1 and set encounters accordingly. Also, large groups are more challenging than single monsters, so either keep the groups smaller or use the minion rule (1 hp), and be careful with creatures that cause the PC to be paralyzed or stunned. Its also good the let the PC hire some extra help, or get some NPCs to help. As long as the NPCs are not more powerful than the PC, and the PC is clearly the leader and decision-maker, the player will not mind the extra help.

      what do you mean by set encounters accordingly?

    • @inky5595
      @inky5595 2 роки тому

      Ik you wrote this a year ago but I imagine it could confuse the player quite a bit if you call it level 1 though they have all the abilities of level 3 and I don' t see really any benefit in calling it level 1

      I think what they mean, is start them off at lv 3 but set the encounters at level 1

    I like 1 one 1 games, haven’t done any in a long while but they can be a lot of fun.

    Hey, Anto. I love the videos. I have an idea of some content you could cover. There is a D&D 5e conversion for Star Wars. If you just google SW5e, it should come up. I think it would be cool if you did an overview of the differences and how faithful of a Star Wars version of D&D it is. Keep up with the good videos, Anto. Cheers!

      Oooo I've never heard of SW5e before! I've taken a quick look and the website is certainly polished and well put together which makes me hopeful for the rules themselves. I will take a look at it.

    I ran a 1 player game with my little sister over the summer once. I got lucky and she was easy to please just I just haven’t her a bunch of cool stuff. She ended up being a 15th level lich wizard/warlock who killed a god and took over the capital city of the continent.

    I want to try to run a Duet game, but it's a bit tricky knowing whether or not to make my own Sidekick character along with the pre-gens that the book came with. I checked the creators' website, but it's a blog so everything is sorted by most recent.

      There's an adventure called The Blood Hunter on DMsGuid that is designed for 1 player and the DM ad is very highly praised: www.dmsguild.com/product/303709/The-Blood-Hunter
      Another option is incorporating the companion mechanics from the essentials box so the player has some NPC friends.
