- This hot melt glue gun was seized by security when I took it through as hand luggage (for safety!). They implied that I might brandish it and hijack the small island-hopper propeller plane.
I'm sure my movie-villain appearance had nothing to do with the decision.
Fortunately I was able to pay to have the glue gun posted to me. (Total cost of both tools £30 - cost of recovering them £20!)
Turns out that it's a very capable little glue gun with a ridiculously fast heat-up time and the circuitry and heater assembly were well worth making a video about.

No joke , i was sitting on a plane once waiting for it to set off from the gate and no joke there was a guy putting the wing back on with foil tape. I joke i don't think he was sticking the wing back on but he was putting foil tape over something on the surface of the wing.
You're lucky they did not realize you could brandish your hand with 2 fingers bent and threaten people like all kids do.
In all fairness, airport security's job is to take no risks. If a layperson could reasonably believe it's a weapon (and thus be threatened by its brandishing) then I don't blame them for leaning on the side of caution by not letting him carry it on the plane.
One of the last things you want while 30,000+ feet in the air is mass panic due to the appearance of a threat, even if that threat isn't genuine.

@@arstulex Ah well... if you want to make it look like a real gun, you can just take something plastic and xray-invisible and take it out. Or maybe as simply as 2 rods you put together under an angle later... for sure the untrained (European, UK) person will not recognize them as beeing real or not in a couple of seconds.
Not that it will make much difference in flight anymore with always closed cockpit-doors...

...there are actually countries where it is illegal to carry sand in your air luggage - apparently some tourists have disassembled some formerly pristine beaches. (Google "sand theft" for some fun on this.)

They prevented a possible terrorist attack in which the passengers were glued together with the crew with hot melted plastic and then tiny holes were made in the fuselage using a little dremel clone (using toothpicks as drilling bits)! They deserve a medal, we all feel a lot safer now ;-)

When I did my first airport security training, the chap who did the course carried with him as his "tools of the trade" a real but deactivated gun and several fake but viable bombs, with plasticene substituted for the plastic explosive.
While passing through airports, where he had to identify himself and notify them of the contents of his luggage, on several occasions he had to stand by the side of the X-ray machine operator and point out "That's a gun. That's a bomb" etc, which demonstrates that these people had no idea what they were looking for or at.
I've done similar training when I was running a security checkpoint for the Olympics. It was shocking to see the sheer scale of staff who simply couldn't comprehend what they were seeing.

My father traveled across several countries and airports back in the 90's. On the way back he just out of curiosity asked to look at the monitor when his things were going through and was shocked to see a handful of 9mm cartridges forgotten there at the shooting range in the pocket of his overcoat. At least 5 security inspectors had seen those and none of them had said anything.
I on the other hand had to have my old mechanical film cameras separately X-rayed a couple of years ago at Helsinki airport because the security personnel probably had never seen such things before and got all suspicious when they saw cameras that were full of gears and springs instead of circuit boards. I guess they thought they were time bombs but nowadays a time bomb probably would not be mechanical. They also said to me I should have put the cameras in a separate tray with my phone and my digital cameras while the instructions clearly said the separate tray thing only concerned devices containing batteries which the film cameras don't have.
But from what I've heard and read many (not all of course) of the people working at airport security probably are some very special kind of idiots who try to conceal their gross incompetence and ignorance with arrogance and aggressiveness. Goes for many police officers and other public authorities too. I really hope airline pilots are smarter, a person who mistakes a glue gun for a firearm and gets hijacked with one should have no business with airplanes.

@@Murgoh You'd be amazed how simple it can be to make a time bomb. The airport security training I mentioned showed that a timer can be made with a clothes peg and a short length of fuse wire. It's not precise, of course, but close enough to be effective.

In conversations, let us calmly and repeatedly draw clear distinctions between guns and firearms. My caulking gun, my grease gun, my hot-melt glue gun, my vaguely-gun-shaped electric drill, and my Weller soldering gun are not firearms and are not weapons.

I've had similar problems with UK airport "security" in my case it was pen/carbide scribe, and a block of self hardening modelling clay, The some how thought that the pen/carbide scribe was a weapon (in their words a "Tactical Pen") and they thought the modelling clay was a "Plastic Explosive",
I demonstrated that the pen/carbide scribe functioned as a pen and then scribed a couple of straight lines with the tungsten scribe tip, as for the “Plastic Explosive” I demanded that they checked it with the Ionscan 600 that was sitting on their desk that was 20 foot away, they were very put out when the Ionscan gave a negative reading. I'm always willing to educate government employees on things they should have been taught day one of their training.
Watch out, everybody! We got somebody with a tactical pen! Might end up storming the cockpit and then write slightly rude things on the pilot's forehead!
@@BaconMinion I found the "Security" peoples antics quite amusing, If I'd wanted to get a weapon/IED onto the plane I'd have easily been able to do it with the engineering skill I have, watching them fuss over the Pen/Scribe had my friends chuckling as they totally missed the 3 foot of Para-cord and a 10oz spherical fishing weight that was in my pocket clutter ans my friends had the same length of Para-cord along with a brass 1 1/2" Whitworth nut a piece which could easily have been used as impact weapons like a Monkey's Fist. And it was not like we tried to hide them they were in our hand luggage .

Funnily enough, they took no issue with my mum bringing her full set of knitting needles (each ~25cm long) on board. Probably thought she wouldn't risk dropping a stitch to stab someone. Her tiny nail scissors on the other hand …
@@rolfs2165 few times I got away with small knife that I had hanging with my keys that I used to open boxes(folding keyunity, size of normal door key), I totally forgot to leave it at home and they didn't notice it... Thats how good they are at spoting real dangerous objects... But screw knifes! Take your shoes off! Now! And you are not allowed to transport hot glue dispenser! And remove your belt! 🤣

Airport security is the longest running make-work project for otherwise unemployables. Anyone old enough to have flown pre 2001 knows this.

I was hoping Clive would tell us how much value they thought they added. (Maybe quite a bit of value, because not many people can boast they own a previously confiscated glue dispenser.)
I once watched in awe as customs accused a travel friend of smuggling goods inside his tape recorder - those top loading mono sound ones. We watched as customs dismantled the whole machine in front of us. It never worked again.
TSA saw my small set of drivers (collection of about 30 bits and a driver handle) and told me "drill bits aren't allowed!" in a snippy tone. When I politely informed them they were small screw driver bits and not drill bits they supervisor let it through although gave me some "well ya know...". Now the case has "SCREW DRIVER SET" in bold sharpie on the front of it and been through multiple TSA checkpoints. I seem to always get the trainee (but maybe all they have is supervisors and trainees).
TSA does have a nearly 20% turnover rate, so you may well have encountered a newbie.
Our techs make maintenance calls at shops in airports. To get around the hassle of security screening they began to “mail” tools via FedEx or UPS to the shops in advance. It’s amazing how easy it was for their tools to bypass security. 😮

If the plane catches fire mention to the cabin crew that it was probably your hot glue gun, but you couldn't take it through into hand luggage because of the crayon eaters doing their little bit of drama.
Have known many people who brought things you shouldn't onto planes.
Security never noticed or cared, more concerned with cans of deodorant and bottles of water than strips of pills, fake vape liquid with other stuff dissolved and people with stuff in their prison pocket carry on.
About 20 years ago I received a fireside companion set (poker, shovel, tongs etc) as a Christmas gift and packed it in my hold luggage when returning home to Ireland. My wife and I were paged in the lounge of Leeds bradford Airport and escorted to a little room by armed coppers and made to unpack our case. Afterwards a grinning copper showed us the x ray and the unassembled utensils looked a lot like an automatic gun, down to the pointy brass ferrules in a line like bullets in a magazine, the shovel looked like the handle, the bundled shafts like the barrel and the poker end like a trigger.
Maybe everyone should get on to carry on the plane to help hold the plug doors in place.

Your situation here reminded me of what happened at Dublin on my way to Isle of Man....my hand baggage was the same one I used when hunting here at home. The side pocket was full of coins that I did not bother to empty out. My bag passed security in Los Angeles without incident. When departing Dublin to go to IoM, that bag was diverted at the security checkpoint. An officer went through the side pocket and pulled something out and placed it in a plastic bag. He asked whose bag it was. I told him it was mine. He showed me what they had found. It was a live .22cal round! I was horrified, and explained that the bag was the same one I used on hunting trips, and the round must have been left in from my last hunt. After some questions from him, he said that the Ireland Police would question me, and if I had no record I would be let go. As Clive knows, I obviously was and made it to IoM on time. I must say that all of the officials were very kind, non confrontational, and very understanding. (I hate to think of what would have happened with TSA here, they aren't so understanding.)
The mystery to me was, how did that same bag get through TSA in Los Angeles? I did ask the officer whilst waiting for the police, and his guess was that the coins shielded the round when x-ray'd in LA. Lesson learned: Completely empty out ALL pockets and compartments before packing for a trip!

My parents had a very similar thing happen, but it was in Miami Airport, on the way home from Jamaica, and instead of a bullet, it was a cannabis seed.

Back in the 90:s my father had a handful of 9mm rounds in his overcoat pocket, they had been left there at the shooting range. went through at least 5 airports and nobody noticed, on the last airport he out of curiosity asked to see the screen and was horrified to see the cartridges in clear sight but the security personnel didn't notice anything.
I use the same large British army duffel bag I use for my shooting equipment as luggage on holiday trips as I usually go on sailing vacations and hard luggage is impractical in a cramped boat. Before a trip I make sure to empty every compartment so there's nothing like cartridges, magazines etc. in them, I also put the bag in the washing machine to wash off any powder residue that could trigger explosive detectors.

About equipment turning on unintentionally: I happen to have a small gas torch which I sometimes use at work. One day I stuffed it into my backpack a little too carelessly and when I came home and set it down on the floor I noticed a faint hissing sound and had no idea where it came from. That question was answered quite quickly by a jet of smoke making its way through the hole the torch had melted through the bottom of the backpack, followed by a nice blue flame.
Following that incident I tend to be more careful.
At an African airline security: "You dash me $20, you can go now and take your gun and lady toy with you"

In the times that fluids were allowed in bigger quantities in an on-board luggage (around 18 years ago), I transported the 24 pack of mini coca-cola cans as a novelty.
In the bag (on top of the cans), there were also: a motherboard for repair and some ignition cables for a rare car, some clothes and shoes.
The X-ray must have looked pretty interesting, so did the reaction of the X-ray operators and security... a lot of security... but - after all the emotions went down, they let me through.
Times have clearly changed.
I had several small 1/4" torque sockets confiscated at Newcastle Airport, they stated that no tools were allowed. They probably wanted them for themselves.
It would be all I could do to not say "No tools allowed? That's a lie, they keep you here."
My grandma bought some toy revolvers for her grandsons. Metal, life size toy revolvers. Which she carried in her handbag. The whole line going through customs was stopped for 1/2 hour.
The Airport staff were clearly disappointed with them not being Ladies Tools. Next time put big pink foam extensions on them. But then again, they might get confiscated for other reasons! 😂🤣😅
When I flew to London for FFXIV fan fest last year with British Airways, they stressed like 20 times in their luggage guidelines that all devices with internal batteries HAVE to go into your cabin luggage. With such rules in place, I really wonder what you're supposed to do if you need powered tools (like those 2 you had) for your job and take them on a flight. Confiscating them for dubious reasons and then collecting a fee so you can get them back is IMHO total BS and if that happened to me I wouldn't stop complaining until they drop the BS and let me keep the tools where they force me to keep them...
Anyway, interesting device, and that tiny heater disk kind of reminds me of the modern round heating blocks used on some 3D printers.
They say that, and then because everyone has roller carry on bags now because they charge to check luggage, and the bins are too small, they make you check it all at the gate anyway - batteries or not, they don't care. When you tell them "it's chock full of lithium batteries", they just say "that's fine"
@@gorak9000 probably depends on airline and how badly overloaded the cabin storage is. On my flight they picked out a few bags in the waiting area before boarding to go into "the hold", but only if they didn't contain any batteries.
I learned this the hard way... Tools are always seized by airport security. They seized my RC airplane starter motor when I flew with it in my hand luggage.
I got the multitool and a wireless soldering tool recently in Aldi. So far they've been pretty useful. Also I might mention that the tools are made by Positec, the same company that makes Worx tools. As is often the case with Aldi / LIDL if you look at the warranty of the tool it'll normally say who made the thing in the first place and often it is major manufacturer, often from Germany. They might even make the same tool under different names but similar spec.
One time, I was flying in the US, and I had a pneumatic impact wrench in my carry on luggage. The safety officer told me I couldn’t carry it on because power tools are not allowed on planes. Not sure what I could have done without an air compressor, but regs are regs. I checked my bag and it was fine.
Maybe they were afraid you'd somehow gain access to the plane's compressors and hook the impact wrench up to them (somehow) and go insane repairing the plane.

Just returned from Portugal, a quick repair job on a car and a bit of golf, security at Edinburgh Airport decided that the short reach 14mm combination spanner was a major security risk and nicked it. They did miss the 12v test lamp with a 4 inch metal spike.
At least they gave you the option of getting them back. Before the TSA existed, they took my dads old knife from me. Gone forever. No options to ship, no chance to put it in a carry on (I checked them at curb), nobody left to come get them. Terrible feeling to hear of irrational confiscation. Bad memories. Glad it worked for you, Clive.
Over on the tsa subreddit, a couple people mentioned a "hack" for this, if you happened to be on the outbound leg of a round trip, and have time. Go find the airport lost & found. Give them your sob story, and ask if you can "lose" dad's knife for the length of time until you're coming back through. Couple people reported success!

I almost lost my Swiss army knife at a ball game (forgot I had it), until I pointed out that if I threatened anyone at a ball game with a Swiss army knife I'd be promptly thrown off the upper deck.

Oh for happier times, I recall flying with Swiss Air in the 90s. The stewardess handed out complimentary Swiss Army knives as we boarded the plane.
The security theater actors sized you up as a peaceful teddy bear quite unlikely to throw a loud fit, so they determined they could perform their theatrics safely on you and feel better about their otherwise useless career choices.
There's two things I'd want different about this before I switch from a dirt-cheap AC mains glue gun. First, replace the spotwelded battery with a battery door and spring terminals so it is trivially easy for a user to replace the battery. Second, a big chonky disconnect switch on that battery. Without it, I'd feel just a tad uncomfortable about throwing this in a toolbox or bag. Too much chance of accidentally turning it on and starting a fire...
I suppose both of these are hacks I could do myself...
Keep in mind that the unit can theoretically pull 10A from the cell for short bursts, so a friction contact might not be a good idea.
True. But I suspect it's solvable without every user needing a spotwelder. Maybe we're ready for an improved standard contact system that's still user-servicable. I mean, tool battery packs can put out more than 10A continuous, and those contacts are just copper-coated springs and blades...
@@oasntet Yup, it's all about the contact area, that's why the blades are as wide as they are, the springs are divided (so irregularities don't lift the whole spring) and there are there are often multiple springs, to boot. In fact, the home battery tool lines all have hot melt glue dispensers, just not as nice and compact as this one.

I learned the hard way to remove batteries from adult toys in checked luggage. Nothing like getting called by airport security to address something vibrating in your luggage!

@@bigclivedotcom When I made my trip from Paris to Marseille in France about 3 years ago I had to choose between the train and the plane.
Plane tickets were a bit cheaper but I knew I would have had to deal with airport security and didn't want to have to show my toys to everyone in the line.
Also putting them in the checked bag wasn't really an option as those also get security screened and I had read about some passengers who had found their toys on the outside of the bags on the conveyor belt at the destination airport.
So I chose the train and sure enough, no one looked at my bags.
But that could have happened thank's to the current security measures against terre-or attacks and in that case it would have been as embarrassing as if I had chosen the plane.

I have no need for a glue gun, but that looks so cool I want one now.
Found an unopened portable Ferrex soldering iron in the dump. I took it for the 18650, but it actually heats up quick, works well and has become a useful tool.
Imagine how much easier would everything be if those tools have removable batteries lol. Just remove the batteries and put them in the luggage and don't worry for the accidental turn on situation.
You are not allowed to put Lithium-Ion batteries into your check in luggage.
You would have to bring the batteries in your carry-on regardless, but you could pack the bare tools in your checked luggage

It's a tax on the value added to a product. When a distributor sells a product that it received from a manufacturer to a retailer, a tax is paid based on the difference between what the distributor paid and what they received. Then when a retailer sells it to a consumer, a tax is paid on the difference between those two prices.
You can make a lot of arguments about this practice, but the idea is that when something is sold, the intermediary provided some sort of additional value, whether that be creation, or distribution, or storage or whatever, and there's a tax on that additional value. The term is perfectly descriptive.

Normally these tool schematics for eg other Ferrex stuff or Parkside, I find hard to understand and can be quite overwhelming. However this one seemed a bit better laid out, and felt more logical. Thanks for the teardown Clive.

I had a similar incident at Newcastle airport on the way to Aberdeen... I'd been fixing up a car that wouldn't start earlier in the day and didn't realise I still had a couple of spanners and a mole wrench in my coat pocket. They let me through with them but not before holding me there for a good five minutes.
This was not nearly as embarrassing though as the day they found some Japanese porno DVDs in my bag that I'd brought back from a trip to Tokyo (including one with the rather unfortunate title of "R**e the Student", which of course I'd bought specifically because I thought friends down the pub would find the title funny). This was in Copenhagen though where they're quite laid back about this sort of thing and the woman security officer found my red face highly amusing.

My brother was traveling somewhere in Europe and found this sign that explained all the international symbols.
He was familiar with most of them but one was new to him.
It was a woman's torso with her bare breasts exposed.
Apparently that is the international symbol for sex shop.
In Europe that is as much of a necessity as fuel or food apparently.

I've gone through TSA with all kinds of electronic mumbo jumbo in various states of disrepair with no troubles. It always boggles me when i do, like it very much has 'this is a bomb' vibes 😂
If you travel often maybe you're in their system as a non-risk?
Hint, called "security theater" for good reason - you'd be horrified about all the things that do make it through, and that's just the ones they know about because they were undercover internal people auditing the process to see what they could get through - there's usually a report once a year about that

@@samholdsworth420 Yeah, Lidl/Parkside do a gas one, runs off butane lighter gas. I just realised I have 9 glue guns, and when I see the one Clive showed here that'll be a round 10. Think I might have a problem 😀

I am quite happy that I having been flying since 2018. If I can’t drive there, I ain’t going. 😂
side note, I would love to have one of those, cordless is amazing, one of the biggest hurdles with using hot melt glue guns is the cords are always too short, or the outlet is on one side of the room and the thing I need to glue is on the other.

In australia i've been reading y tubers reports on ferrex in aldi uk for a while. And their finally here (well the drill is) and a decent price rise also. Think i'll wait till next year.
The trigger switch probably puts it in sleep mode if not used for a while.
Might also increase the power and temperature when actually working, keeping the temperature a little lower when not gluing would decrease oozing and preserve battery life.
I've got one of these Ferrex glue guns and it is really good. A handy thing to have. It does have an auto power off feature so maybe that switch in the trigger, if it sees no input from that over a preset period of time then it will turn off.
The "business end" looks a lot like a newer 3D-printer hot end, though the ceramic heater in mine at least is longer, a cylinder maybe 15mm long instead of just a thin disc.

@@holysirsalad Yeah that's one of the examples I was thinking about. The ones on drive shaftes that will almost certainly be rounded out by those not in the know using a torx bit. (May also ruin the bit).
Torx is a fantastic bit / screw shape. very hard to slip, excellent power transfer and good quality bits hold for a very long time. We almost exclusively use them in woodworking, T20 is the most common size.
@@DrakkarCalethiel Yes torx is one of the better ones used in europe. 3 and 4 square are also good but can be confusing to the less technical. Robertson is also good. Chross heads and slot heads should be discontinued unless in building preservation. In mechanics there is really no good reason for using an inferior screw head for reasons of preservation assuming the unit is in active use.
T20 is a good type of screw. I know miele german wasmachines use t20 and t30

When BG showed one before Christmas I zoomed down to Aldi and they were £10 so I got my chum one, great little gun for the bench. I hope they sell gooo sticks. I also got the soldering Iron which was £10, it's ok for the odd job. Very natty design. Thanks BG for your contribution to sanity.

Some guys at my last job did the exact same thing, went across country to install fast access inventory shelves for specific workshops and usually they drive and they need to bring a glue gun for part of the process. One of the workshops was in Edinburgh and we're located near London so they took a plane with most of the parts already sent by pallet but they had the glue guns with them and they got taken at security on the plane

Reminds me of the time I went through customs with some "Bum Butter" in my had luggage. For the uninitiated, this was chamois cream for cycling.
Try as I might, I couldn't persuade them that it wasn't, in fact, a consumable item such as you would spread on toast. Perhaps I should have asked them to eat some to make that clear.
Anyway, it ended up being disposed in their great big bin of future customs officer Christmas presents.

that heats up quick! i have one that uses 4 AA cells, plus 2 gas ones and they seem to take ages to warm up enough, especially one of the gas ones! the battery one is weirdly branded 'coldheat' same company as made that instant/'cold' soldering iron thingy with a split carbon tip, which is pretty much useless !
i think the battery one is rated 6w, or something like that so not surprising it takes a while

My first though for the second potential divider was to detect the higher voltage of a smart carger, but i'm guessing the smart funcionality is just current ?

In the states and Canada, Ryobi has a "hot snot" dispenser. As i recall, it met the AVE seal of possible skookum. Id love to see your tear down, you have better goings on with the electronicals than he does.
I bought one based on his video.
Would never even consider taking tools or gun-shaped items on as hand luggage.
