I knew right away cuz he's credited on the back of the album. Always read the liner notes. You find out little things like a band called The Frantix in 1983 wrote grunge-rock rules on theirs. They are from Denver . The band eventually morphed into the fluid and moved to Seattle in 89 or 90. As they were recording for subpop. How many different explanations have you heard of where that term comes from. Find me a reference to that earlier than that and I will agree that liner notes should be ignored.

Didn't know this was Bowie at first either.. when I was 12 a friend of mine showed me Dinosaur Jr, this song 1st and I loved it. Listening to it now, it's awesome how he changed 75% of the lyrics and the guitar too. Same chords but, the way he plays it especially in the beginning, sounds very much like Pink Floyd's song Wish You Were Here. I love it! Btw huge Bowie fan here, the original is timeless!!!
Chords and lead are almost just like David Bowie's song about Andy worhol. However J Mascis' different lyrics are a whole different meaning. Just incredible. I've been both a dinosaur 🦕 jr and a Bowie fan for a long time. One thing about dinosaur jr is that the covers of songs that j mascis does are as good as,if not better than the original versions. Most cover versions of songs by other artists are pale imitations at best.
I accidentally ended up with this album when I was in high school. I remember it being nearly completely un-listenable, but this one gem, it's a great song.

Hopefully you are still loving good music?

J Mascus is actually a genius. Great guy too. This song helped me mourn the loss of my station wagon in high school. RIP
This is the most 90s thing I’ve ever read. Mine was a Ford tempo

Excellent version of Bowies best song
I like how it starts off with them playing Bowie's Andy Warhol and then merges into Quicksand.
Dont
I love the different interpretation Dinosaur Jr. takes with this one.
I captured this song in Aalst in the free record store when I was 17...and got overwhelmed....x
I'm closer to the golden dawn
I can't believe the wagon's gone
It's history
I don't even know why people are so mad. It's a COVER obviously. Let me say that again COVER. This is a great dinosaur Jr cover in my opinion
The bulldog on the cover has eye heterochromia. Subtle touch DJr.
+SuperSparrow45 David Bowie didn't have heterochromia though
little welchs Yes an intriguing finding. However, it still is pretty Bowie-like.

I'm drawing between the light and dark
Where others see their targets

Should I leave the engine on
To listen to that mountain song
Sinking in the quicksand of my thoughts
And I ain't got the wagon anymore
Don't believe in yourself
Don't deceive with belief
The knowledge comes with death's release
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Not too stable
Hanging by a string
Can't face the thoughts
No wheels will bring
I gotta go
It's bad enough being at home
Without a way to leave the damage
Is gonna show
If I don't explain
What you oughta know
You can tell me all about it
At the next ball show
I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thoughts
And I ain't got the power anymore
Don't believe in yourself
Don't deceive with belief

David Bowie :) I love it when Mascus "hawks the loogie"

Aw, no one has this live
J has covered The Smiths, The Cure and now Bowie... He is just a little too cool to be true :O
What Smiths cover?
I love how the intro is "Andy Warhol" and then it turns into "Quicksand".
I listened to the David Bowie original, and although it's good..Mascis really made this track 100% better.

great song!
better than the original
