The classical dance form of Manipur, the Ras Leela, is at most some 270 years or so. It evolved after the then Manipuri king embraced Vaishnavism sometime in 1709. Yet there were other dance forms before the coming of Vaishnavism/Hinduism in Manipur from which the Ras Leela evolved. So Ras Leela is not a dance form whixh is as old as the culture. The tourism department of Manipur government should understand the sentiments of indigenous people of Manipur and stop such misreporting in the name of promoting tourism. Please do proper research before making any documentary related to such topics.
This dance form is at most 300 years old. It is derived from the actual folk dances of the natives. When the king took Vaishnavism and imposed it upon the natives. The state government has adopted this as a classical dance for the convenience of a few Hindu centric upper caste individual at the expense of the sentiments of the native people. Please don't omit the history while explaining the culture of a nation. It is not at all as ancient as the people. They are not at all the gandharvas mentioned in the Hindu puranas.
This is not our cultural dance...it is adopted dance...this dance originates from manipur with outside influence..this dance is not related to any culture and history of Manipur.
this dance form has definetly evolved in manipur and bhagyachandra was the choreographer or creator...you can say the idea or raas lila is not indeginious but dance form definetly is
