"An excellent Barshens episode"
You bastard! You beat me to it!
I would listen to Dan talk about philosophy for hours on end.
I really enjoyed the dynamic of a philosopher and a psychologist grilling a layperson with existential questions.
*Barry says something innocuous*
Stuart and Dan: "Gasp! Solipsism! Hmm, yes, indeed!"
Had to keep pausing, as the cross banter in the 'Sharticles' section was making me cry with laughter. Top notch, gents, top notch.
And if the world was flat... Cats would have swiped everything over the edge by now.
Lovely episode! Dan is such a genuinely interesting person, and I really loved the discussions in this episode.
Seeing Dan defend Barry's interest in learning about Philosophy from Stuart's laughter about his lack of knowledge was great. I know it's just banter, but this showed how much he values knowledge and learning. Would love to see more with him. This format seems a better fit for him than the old Barshens.
West country police officer in America had me in stitches
"Head philosophyist person" 10/10
Dr Stuart ashens, the only human on this wonderful planet that can pull off the once thought extinct comb over.
Thanks, now i can only focus on his hair.
It could just be the three of you every episode, I love it. I would listen to hours more of this.
Edit: You could call it Bardanshens... or Danasharry. Idk
I hate that these get so little views. Hope you will keep them going anyway! Really enjoy all your content
Considering it's also a podcast I'm sure more people are experiencing this joy than the views on here would suggest.
These guys are brilliant at what they do from Ashens videos to his live streams and Barry and his amazing cooking and recipes and all the behind the scenes lot it’s criminal they ain’t recognised more
This is the first podcast in a long time that showed up because I watched the 'not podcast' ones immediately from my subscription feed. I think that putting those inbetween works very well to get them to appear in your recommended every once in a while.
To answer Dans final philosophy question to Barry I'd like to quote the great philosopher Homer Simpson. "What is mind? No matter. What is matter? Never mind."
The longer that I think about it and the older that I get; the more knowledge that I acquire, the less that believe in the concept of "free will"
I have a really long-winded explanation, but it boils down to the fact that because of the person that you are and the characteristics that you have/acquire you're almost guaranteed to always make the same choices because you're going to run into the same chains of reasoning behind said decision. Y'know?
Like how Dan was studying art and because of the person that he is he took a liking to the conceptual side of things and switched gears to philosophy.
Enjoyed this one. Cheers chaps.
I think thse work better when the guest is someone they know, because the conversation flows more naturally.
To the first words Barry says on this episode, I reply:
"Barry, no. Step away from the Meerkats - drop the Nutella, and kick it away from you."
Good to see Dan again - and there's no chance of him being poisoned by some of Stuart's dodgy food, so that's a good thing.
And yes, I can see Dan as 'Darth Excellence' in a Star Wars Movie.
Theres always a chance of stuart poisoning people with dodgy food.
@@turnbull832 - Dan has become a Vegan, and has given food testing with Stuart a swerve, so he's safe.
Loved this, and would absolutely love a follow up. The philosophical discussions were very interesting, and I do wonder if I experience exactly what Dan was describing. I have tried explaining it to people in the past and they just think I'm weird lol.
Imagine being the employee accused by the sheriff of random burger eating.
He would be sat in jail surrounded by murderers and when they ask what he did he has to explain he was accused of eating a burger.
Imagine being the guy who accused someone of eating his burger.
After the investigation he'd be in jail and has to explain that he ate some of his own burger and forgot.
By the way, one useful method to show that the Earth is spherical, is to photograph the sky at night in two different places, and compare them. You'll notice the stars are in completely different positions in the sky, especially if the two locations are of different longitudes, but also because the sky will look like it's wrapping around your observable bubble. If the Earth was flat, the sky would be the same for everyone, and it would be parallel to the planet.
@k Indeed.
I'm genuinely glad to learn that Olivia Colman was cool to Dan. She's one of these artists i would watch in anything, simply because she's there. I think you should all watch the recent series she made with Julian Barratt, "Flowers". Brilliant stuff, that. And, of course, "Look around you" is a bloody classic.
Well..I reside in Indiana. I really wish I didnt.
Now you know my pain.
Now you know.
Save me.
Sorry 😐
Howdy Indiana Brethren!
Be proud of our Burger Eating, Meth Huffing, Bullshit state!
@@mollusk8611 nothing better than a burger and a crystal pipe in the morning!
This one was particularly amazing.
Can DJ the absent-minded West Country expat and his adventures in Indiana be a wacky sitcom please?? Signed, an American West Coast expat
Thank you Barshens team and godspeed.
Dan's great! Haven't gotten past the sandwich part yet, but my belly's already aching. In part because of the spicy beans I ate earlier, but mostly because I'm laughing so hard.
I really loved to see/hear Barry in this one. He's a layperson in scholarly matter but the well is clearly deep. We don't get to see that too often
this is potentally the best thing i have ever watched
An existential video. Bloody excellent.
Dan turned into Jeff Goldblum
This episode really had a Ricky Gervais show vibe, especially when Barry was being asked philosophical questions! Love it!
Barry went full Karl Pilkington.
As a grad student in astrophysics, I would love to come on and discuss flat Earth in this or a show like this!!
Definitely the best episode yet. Dan should be a permanent guest.
8:41 I love that the sharticle writer added "[have management]" to that quotation to make it sound slightly less power-trippy than it is
Dan is hysterical. Only the 2nd video with him I've seen. Love him, fits in well with Stuart and Barry.
That was one heck of an intro Barry, really set the tone for the my expectations of this video.. :D
I had to pause the video at the part where Dan told the hummus story. I've been laughing non-stop for around 5 minutes now.
This is literally one of the best podcast episodes. Always makes me laugh. I’ve watched this so many times.
Stay Fresh Cheese Bags!
But will it stay fresh? And is the content actually cheese? How can we ever know!
Really enjoyed this episode, very funny! Thanks guys :)
"An Excellent Podcast"
I still have my postit notes with his face on them.
This was officially the best episode of Barshens ever. Dan needs to be on this once a month, guaranteed. Someone set up a petition!
I now need to watch every Sherlock episode to find out where Dan is as an extra!
I've missed (the original) Dan but Barry's philosophical musings just make it.
Finally some Brits doing American accents somewhat worse than my fake English accent...
I wish Tom Scott was in this episode, he could answer the " proving the Earth is round" thing with "So basically I'd strap a camera to a weather balloon and send it to the edge of the atmosphere and then review the footage. Also I'd put garlic bread on that because why not"
We now have the first line of dialogue for the third Ashens movie
"Philosophy is just Gandhi quotes"
Just got round to listening to this an excellent episode really funny 👍🏻
When Barry sais the sentence, Dan is later forced to rehearse, in the short part before the intro, I seriously thought "What the F Barry, that's too far, even for you" but it wasn't weird enough that I doubted he would say something like that seriously.
12:10 RoboCop was solving his own murder and DJ was solving his own... burger. ;)
that "indiana" accent is incredible
An excellent chat!
The first time I saw Dan was a video of his where they fight a cat. It was hilarious
Man I could stop laughing watching this
Today, on this episode of Barlinson...
WOOOO DAN FINALLY, start eating horrible foods with Stuart again we miss youuuuu :(
Doris did not move on.
Hi crew, can you please tell Barry that what he described is Dissociative disorder and that he should talk to a professional about it? Please? Thanks 😊
It sounds like dissociation, but it doesn't sound like it's a disorder. I have episodes like that in irregular intervals, and my psychiatrist taught me methods of grounding myself in reality and said it's not something to worry about, as long as it doesn't stay for too long.
Are the old Barshens episodes available on your patreon, or is there some other place where I could listen to them?
Well I wasn't expecting that XD
"Did you mean Chef Existenz?"
0:07-0:12 (intro): I'm worried about Barry
Very funny this week guys but can someone tell me who sprayed Dan that colour.
Dicky humous.......good eatin'.
I love Barry, but jesus christ he's so awkward lol
good episode.I laughed
59:11 the "i" is in what we call the soul I suppose...
does anyone know the name of the moon landing doc that dan was talking about ? sounds interesting
Is it just me or does Dan look huge when he's the only one in shot? Maybe it's a head to shoulder width ratio thing?
Please bring back the 1.0 outro music and soundbites.
Sometimes I like to slather meerkats in Nutella and force them to make love to Yorkshire terriers.
I too believe in free willy
27:50 LAZERS!
Dan strikes me as having an accent slightly reminiscent of “Mummerset,” the stereotypical English actor’s country-bumpkin accent loosely modeled on Somerset. Not really surprising.
When someone asks me the whole "is your life someone artificially manipulating your brain" style question, my answer is always the same. If I am, then meh. It wouldn't effect me if my life wasn't real, because the whole point would be to make it feel real such as to make me not notice. Might as well just get on with it and have fun.
Artificially stimulated brains deserve fun too.
does anyone know where to fight this cat fight thing that edgar wright retweeted? 49:05
If you fight this cat you're on about please record it and stick it on youtube.
...what
Did I hear it wrong. Dan said he was in a short film or something on UA-cam that Edgar Wright retweeted
@@amelialikesfrogs5778 Proofreading does a world of good mate.

My dad did philosophy at university, and basically philosophy is "how to win an argument" class. Because a philosopher will just redefine the question until their answer is correct and their opposition doesn't understand the subject enough anymore to disagree.
Edit: That one was actually come up with by him and my physicist brother, since the physics department at the uni my brother went to had the view "never ever try to debate a philosopher" for roughly that reason.
Would you kindly explain free will to me?
A microwaved McDonalds burger, if it hasn't been that long, actually doesn't taste any different or change at all.
It does. Gets soggy.
I thought you were going back to proper Barshens, but no, still just a "podcast".
Does Ashens use botox? Why does he have the forehead of a baby cherub?
It sounds to me that we all suffer from some sort of mental health problem.
Never heard any american talk like that...
