      Absolutely, some people think that stealing from retail (of any kind) is a victimless crime, of course it isn’t, especially if you are a one man band or a couple just trying to earn a crust. On the street market where we have a stall we often see the same people every week and there is one guy who is well noted for having the occasional ‘sticky fingers episode’ so his face is known by all the traders and any newbies are told to watch out for him.

The picture with the man and his dog is fantastic. You did well today. Wouldn't it be nice if the weather would stay mild for a few more weeks? Good hunt.

    You get the best stuff from the Tote Man! The photo of the man & his dog is amazing. That alone was worth the trip to the flea market. I had the same Cabbage Patch
    Kids sheets back in the 80s. I talked my mom into wall-to-wall pink carpet to match the Cabbage Patch motif I had going on. It was an eyesore, but I thought it was beautiful.
    Thanks for the fun trip down memory lane. Watching you treasure hunt for vintage goodies is always a blast!

    Hi Renee...Is that "Mr Personality" button for me? hehe...the ToteMan brought a kitchen sink to the flea market, but it didn't sell because it was all washed up! 🤣....lots of excitement at the flea market today. A thief was caught red handed today stealing some aluminum. He was embarrassed cause his plan was foiled!......You don't tug on Superman's cape, You don't spit into the wind, you don't pull the mask off that old lone ranger, and you don't mess with ToteMan's stuff!

    Back when I'd do picking very often at Goodwill Outlet (bins) when it was $0.99/pound for most stuff and $0.20/pound for certain stuff, there were a few times when people would grab stuff out of my cart. Plus 3 times when they simply took my entire cart and tried checking out. The first time, they succeeded and were gone, having bought what I'd spent 2 or 3 hours picking. From then on, I'd find something ridiculous to put in the child seat part of the cart (big dirty stuffed animal or whatever), and something (preferably a 6ft pool noodle) to stand up like a flag pole from the cart. On the next two attempts, the cart thieves didn't think to ditch the pool noodle first. When I'd see the pool noodle moving, I'd go grab my cart back with a "That's mine." Pretty bad when you need to do that, plus throw a blanket or something over the cart to keep people from picking stuff out from it.
    At least it showed that the disreputable pickers had figured out which of the reputable pickers did a good enough job that they were willing to pay for 20 or 50 pounds of stuff without going through it, just buying it all for a quick getaway. My general rule there was that, except for certain things, I only picked items which would get 10x what I paid, and a minimum expected selling price of $15. The exceptions to that were things I'd accumulate quantities of, or specialized in, or things I was pretty sure would sell for over $50.

    • @PaperandMoose
      @PaperandMoose  Місяць тому +4

      Your bins sounds a bit like my bins, which I don't go to very often. People use the carts but try to cover up their items, put something ridiculous- like you said - on top. The pool noodle is a great idea! If I found anything really good at the bins, I would take what I had found at the time, pay for it, put it in my car, and then come back in.

    16:18 Beck Bogert Appice album was worth checking date/edition/condition of. Could be $5, could be $50. I was lucky enough to see Jeff Beck in concert twice, maybe 10 or 15 years ago. His mastery of the electric guitar was a full level above anyone else I've seen, and two levels above most rock stars. It didn't even matter whether I liked what he was playing or not, just watching and hearing him play anything, was amazing.

    Mr. Tote Man: "Don´t do it again !" ☹ A thrilling start of this show, that´s for sure. And the Tote Man´s inventory never disappoints as well. I would have taken the old iron (around 1900), highly collectible and decorative. Anyways, you made some awesome finds again like the Sears, Roebuck catalogue reprint, the old magazines, the Dead Shot bottle etc.👌
    By the way, Renée: honorable postal clerk Joe told me yesterday that another little package from Europe arrived yesterday and is available for pickup. Kudos to USPS: they just needed two days from Queens distribution center, Kearny distribution center, Phillipsburg P.O. to Bloomsbury P.O. whereas Deutsche Post needed eight (!) days from Hannover to Frankfurt. The rise and decline of a postal system...🤨Have a good one, first snow today over here ! 🌨Greets from GER, U.

    The illustrations in the Sears Catalog and the Ladies Home Journal are beautiful. Can you imagine how long it took - and how many people - to put out those magazines & catalogues back in the day? All that drawing! The stand-up desk you went by - I know it's not your thing, but they can bring pretty good money in the right condition. That one looked like it had been abused a little. 30 years ago that caned back / seat rocker would have brought a lot of money - now you can't give them away. In 1988 I restored one and gave it to my then girlfriend now wife. I meant to have it done before we left school for winter break but I didn't - so I had to hide all the parts around the dorm with clues. And ... once again we see the flea market as the great leveler - all sorts of people having all sorts of moods / days. Did you buy that Mr. Personality button? I thought you could give it ti the guy if you ever saw him again. Hopefully he's too embarrassed to show his face. Oh well, I shouldn't judge - don't know what he's going through. Nevertheless if I had witnessed that it would have unfortunately soured the trip for me - glad it didn't seem to for you. Thanks for the video & have a great Tuesday!

      Yes, the work involved in those illustrations....amazing! They are pieces of art! A friend's mother had an entire career doing sewing pattern illustrations. Her work was absolutely beautiful. Wonder what she would've produced had she lived long enough to pursue a career of her own original artwork.

      Oh, I loved that desk! Tote Man would have had to deliver it to my place, not sure it would have fit in my car. I was thinking how it would be to actually use it as an office desk now and can't quite picture it, especially if using a laptop because of the slant. Still a nice piece! I might have been the next person to be yelled at if I gave that man the Mr. Personality button :0) I understand people do not want others looking in their piles, but it does happen. My guess is things escalated and next thing, the man is making rude comments about a woman who was just trying to get him to calm down a bit. Then it escalated more, and he thought he could get his "revenge" by stealing something. Maybe it was a full moon the night before! I already heard through the grapevine that the Tote Man will not be at the market this upcoming weekend, weather is going to be a bit colder & he is busy with getting even more inventory. I can sleep in that Sunday! Hope that your Tuesday was swell, as they used to say!

    That electric iron reminded me of one got on either my birthday or Christmas. Mine came with an ironing board. It was funny because it never got hot enough to actually iron my dolls clothes. Sort of like the Easy Bake oven.

    Renee, do you ever end up with paper eating bugs hitch-hiking on the old treasures you buy? I once bought a wool felted rug, new, from a crafter, but it must have had wool moths because for a very long time after, I was fighting a battle against them. Another time, I ordered some grocery food from Sweden, but it turned out something in it was infested with weevils and they spread and I had to throw away so much dry goods and pantry items. Thankfully, my bug battles these days are only from the odd few fruit flies from a bunch of bananas. Anyway....It was Thrifting Thursday today and I did manage to get out and I found two more Paul Bonner items and such an amazing Norwegian pewter piece, I can't wait to take pictures this weekend and put the items up for sale. Happy treasure hunting and swift and easy sales to you!

    You need to bring one of the old fashioned shopping carts when you shop at the flea market. Easier than a bag.

    • @PaperandMoose
      @PaperandMoose  Місяць тому +6

      I find the issue with the shopping carts is that in some areas, there isn't enough room to have it by you/through the rows. I don't want to leave the cart on the side either, because like today, people might have sticky fingers and things end up disappearing.

  • @Gabriele-sv9qg
    @Gabriele-sv9qg Місяць тому +1

    It's exactly as you said, stealing from the Tote Man is ridiculous considering his low prices. What I didn't understand was whether the man who had formed the pile and then got so upset, or the one who touched his pile, wanted to steal? But in the end that's not important, the main thing is that the Tote Man was able to prevent it.
    Important is that you have found some very interesting items again: the catalogue, the old magazines (the paper is a bit brittle), the photo of the man with the dog, Snoopy of course 😍, Ernie, who I love just as much 😍 and... a bottle to kill 😂 (bed bugs). This is perhaps a larger equivalent to the small green poison bottle that you held in your hand at a rummage sale some time ago?
    Enjoy your finds with a good cup of tea!
    Cheers,
    Gabriele - Berlin

      The man who had the pile or bag of stuff, whatever it was, he was the person that ended up walking away with something from the Tote Man. I think he was mad because of the scene that was caused and so thought it would be "payback". Whatever type of liquid that bottle held, it was sure to kill about every type of bug in the house I would think!

    I was stolen from at one sale too many as a buyer. Darned right the guy with the pile raised cain. I would too, unless I was stealing like that prize (word omitted). I spent TIME picking things, and spent years learning what to buy. If you're not paying for my time and expertise and you take something, you're stealing even if I haven't paid for the item yet. That's THEFT. Stealing from the Tote Man or another dealer though... I'd call the cops and press charges. (can you tell I don't like thieves?)

    • @PaperandMoose
      @PaperandMoose  Місяць тому +1

      I don't think the person took anything from the man's pile, I think he just looked at something/touched something without knowing it was someone's stuff. That happens many times at the market, but normally the response is just "That's my pile, sorry" and nothing more comes from it. My biggest issue was when the man said negative & derogatory remarks about the women there, which was completely uncalled for.

    I know you will have a great adventure...as I see your Thumbs Up! I like that sail boat hull, I'd use it for remodeling, I've done that to two such hulls I was given by one of my neighbors. Ah, speaking of repurposing...that toy bus...a fr-g public transit vehicle! I had a similar situation...I was shopping my Walmart...two guys were helping themselves to "free" stock. they were pretty young...one was deciding what flavor gum package to pocket...I had the guts to tell him...put it back...not worth you getting you and your family in trouble...he sheepishly looked away and did put it back. the other guy had left...they were unrelated. His mom was shopping there...she came around to meet him. I did not tell mommy of his potential deed. Hope he learned a lesson...he was, otherwise a polite young man! That sad iron will give you a workout swinging it around the ironing board! Looks like a little 1889 battleship! Like that neat wooden treasure shaped box...is that "Mr. Personality button a fr-g?? Wonder if people still play VHS...a couple of years ago, I donated my collection, as the player died. Still play DVDs and CDs. Looks like a traveler's iron. Boy, those LPs bring back memories of youthful days! I remember those Sears reprints...had three...they went to a friend who worked at Sears. A few of the originals, when new ones came out, ended up in the farmer's outhouse!

      I still have my VHS & my little tv that has a built-in VHS player. Was my tv in college & I would even bring a few of my favorite tapes with me to watch or just have on as background noise.
