The old man was my husband, Jay Shuttleworth, horseman, famous bit maker and love of my life. He had ridden every kind of horse good and bad his whole life, trained them, showed them, taught and later in life made custom bits for everyone, including the international teams - you can read articles about him if you look him up. I found this clip by accident - he had always been the one to throw himself into a dangerous situation to help with a horse and it lit my heart to see him still trying to do this just about a year before he had to stay home permanently because of early Alzheimers. I love that you all noticed him - thank you. Jay died in 2019.

For all angry that the horse could have gotten tangled- he was spooked! It isn't the rider's fault and it isn't the horse's fault. The horse tripped unexpectedly, the rider fell, the bridle came of and pony got spooked. So he ran. That's what horses do.

This is why they're called accidents because nobody is to blame. Could it have been prevented? Why sure it could have, just as most accidents could be avoided, if only,... you fill in whatever fits. Courses are meant to be tough and hard to navigate for the Open Jumper competitions. They test a riders skills and timing abilities to the max. A rider should know their surfaces in order to avoid such a spill, but then there are always those anyway. Always will be.

Anyone who actually rides knows stuff like this happens, generally when you least expect it :) It wasn't "chaos". The horse was pretty laid back even when dealing with the bridle. That's the only thing that gave me a few bad moments.

This was handled extremely well, in my opinion. Everyone stayed quite and didn't try to stop the spooked horse, the let it run itself out, then, they calmly gathered it up. It's always nice to see people that understand horses and how to be responsible around them, if that hadn't been the case, the horse probably would've spooked more and gotten injured. Props to everyone there!

No offense but their are way to many uneducated people on this site. If anyone didn't already notice, I'm almost positive that this rider was using a hackamore, yes I've seen jumpers using them so don't say that they are either illegal or never used in this level of show jumping or sj in general. People saying that this horse spooked at something is completely false, it was a minor stumble and he got right back up and even proceded to jump another fence. And people who are commenting saying that the rider is an idiot for askin her horse to make that sharp of a turn is also false, in show jumping you need to make tight turns no matter what, and they get tighter and tighter as you proceed through the different levels. This horse was clearly capable of making that sharp of a turn, or else it would have been much more drastic if he wasn't. This is in no way chaos, nor a rider error, the horse stumbled and the rider fell off, and the horse even proceeded to jump another fence because he knows what his job is and enjoys it, or else he wouldn't have done what he did. It is no ones fault, it's simply and error and an accident, it happens.

For everyone going on about this rider, can just point out a few things I noticed.
    1. CONGRATULATIONS ON USING A HACKAMORE! BRAVO 👏 👏 👏
    2. I don't see an issue with the bridle coming off 🤷‍♀️ If he did get his leg caught, it would break. And definitely less pain than what a bit would be imposing over the whole course.
    3. She DID NOT pull it off his face! Yes she didn't let go of the reins straight away but sorry that's natural. We all try to save ourselves in the moment!
    4. He shook it off the rest of the way. So do you know what that means? It has been put on CORRECTLY! Bridles/Hackamores are NOT ment to be on so tight that they don't come off. When they are to tight, that's when they restrict the horses natural movement to be able to do what they need. Especially in jumping.
Bloody good horse & Bloody great rider 🥰

What a better response from the people here than those that I recently saw on a video showing a horse cart/carriage event. A horse got spooked and threw his cart driver and then crashed into people and horses, etc. but the people didn't remain calm and quiet like these folks. They were yelling and jumping in front of the horse, trying to grab the reigns and then that horse hit another horse which caused the second horse to be spooked and he started running and crashing into people and horses as well. Had the people remained calm like these people did, there probably wouldn't have been near the chaos and apparent injuries that actually occurred. It was pure mayhem and an embarrassment for people that claim to be "horse people".

What an amazing example of what you should do in a situation like this leave the horse alone to calm down then go ahead and approach it round of applause to these people 👏🏼👏🏼

It'a a natural thing to fall off every once in awhile. The horses hind quarters just buckled and followed by the rider.making my eyes widen slightly. I am glad your okay and I hope your horse is okay as well.
One of my horses named Silver was looking at Penny one of our schooling horses and Silver tripped. He went. down to floor and then got up. He arched his back and I went off breaking my wrist from impact. We were at the canter and so imagine not getting back on due to not knowing what is wrong. Then healing and getting back on to work on the canter when I was ready.
I would go then freeze up with eyes a little scared and stop breathing hence asking Silver to come back down to a trot. It took me 2 months of riding every day to finally be able to get into canter and push on!
Now Silver and I show in the ring with smiles on our faces. We are passionate about what we do and how we do the course.
Thanks for posting this Erin and I was directed to this video by a friend who was talking to me about horses and my fall. I was feeling stupid and how I fell off as my horse was almost up. My friend pulled out his phone and showed me your video just now. I then watched it again on my computer and am tying this now.
An excellent ride and I wish you and your cute horse best wishes! Hope Chaos is well and happy.

Everyone in this video handled this pretty well, especially the audience. Usually when chaos starts the audience gets riled up and loud and that just escalates the situation but besides the gasps here and there it wasn’t that bad, it could have definitely gone worse.

damn that horse is an amazing jumper, it’s such a shame the rider fell! both the rider and the horse had a very good performance until the horse tripped :( and bless the horse even jumped a fence on its own. you can really tell that both the horse and the rider love showjumping!

Good work there old man :)
One of the reasons I don't like show jumping - at least tournament based; is that the obstacles are usually too high for the size of the horse. Also for this one.
The tendons are overstressed and here you can see very clearly how hard the horse touches down at the front.
Don't get me wrong: I often let my horse jump freely in the hall (just for the variety) but then with obstacles that go up to his chest at most.

I definitely agree there’s a limit for most horses! Mine is 4’5”, but I know my horses can handle it and I don’t jump them often (twice a week maximum). I do think that the FEI should maybe modify courses and checks on horses before shows to make sure the horse is in full top shape.

What I noticed about the rider was her stiffness. We all know correcting unexpected movement is impossible when you're that rigid. Having a great connection gives that extra pinch of a second to make corrections. Just my quick observation. The elderly gentleman at the end was the best part of this video for me.

I'm glad to see the old man step out and comfort the horse because not many people would do that people would just think "shit there is a horse running around in the arena🙄" which I know they already do cause I'm an equestrian but still this man had a completely different mind set and went I'm going to help this horse and take it back to the rider which I love about people. ❤️

This is actually what happens at most (if not every) USEF/FEI show when a rider makes an unscheduled dismount.

  • @hejter6633
    @hejter6633 4 роки тому +1

    Basically, what happened:
The horse tripped on a tighter turn and fell, so did the rider. The horse then got up, the bridle tangled around his neck/leg, so he got spooked and started running around. Then the horse calmed down.

  • @RPostVideos
    @RPostVideos 3 роки тому +1

A horse, wearing a hackamore (no bit in his mouth), slipped and his hind legs went out from under him a little. It happens sometimes. Bridle comes over his ears when the ride fell forward. Horses run around quite often when their rider falls off. Bridle got tangled and broke. Horse free jumped. Not that hard to dissect here.

Horse tripped on that hard turn the girl was trying to make, and got spooky with them reins around their legs, I thought that the horse would've tripped again. Good that they didn't trip on the reins. After the horse ran them self out, the old timer was that extra comfort for the horse, their ears really perked up when they saw him. Also, I think it was very good that the girl instinctively let go of the reins, since, well, if she DID hold on, she'd just hurt the horses mouth and probably make them more spooky. Up until the sharp turn, those 2 were a good team. But it'll be a good lesson for the girl. Taking too much a of a sharp turn like that can make your horse fall over. Best that she tries to not do that anymore.

This is lovely. Rider in hackamore, bitless for the horse's comfort. Horse has minor freak out the runs to exit where lovely older dude calms and collects and all is well. Could some ground lessons in trust be of benefit? Heck yes, but for the most part this was just a slip and fall where the rider released the horse once fallen (could have done so quicker but fear-response is hard to combat) and horso quite happy to be caught. SETTLE DOWN

I don't think the situation could have been handled better honestly. The rider had a hackamore (not that they're that 1000000% better than bits bit still) and she had a very gentle hand it's unfortunate that the horse tripped but I'm glad everyones okay.

Always more interesting to go straight to the comments section with horse videos because all the expert horse women like to give their reasoning to what just took place . They all seem to be experts on what a rider or horse did to create a situation . In reality most horse women should really just own a cat instead of a horse .
