I think that you're wrong. A lot of people who'd vote for Biden will NOT vote for a Black Woman. As problematic as Biden may be, he was a white man. There is a huge amount of racism and sexism in this country. I am going to pray that Trump is so obviously toxic and horrific that they will hold their noses and vote for her anyway.

Doesn't matter how morally / ethically good an elected representative is 'cause, eventually, they'll stop acting in the interests of their constituents. As a Trans Woman, Saturday I was scared, deathly afraid of the future and dealing with the panic of all that. Today, while I still have my concerns and worries, I at least have better hope and my sense of panic is less. In 30 years, I've never had a perfect President to vote for, but I have also never had a more obvious decision on who needs to NOT get into the office and which party CANNOT be allowed to lead. I, obviously, was going to vote for Biden. Not just for myself, but for all the targets of bigotry and hate of the right. Now, I am much more enthusiastic to vote for Harris, even with the baggage that she has.

I too felt a sense of hope when I realized that Harris was stepping in for Biden. Some relief, some hope, some excitement that things might get a bit better instead of worse. She actually feels like the perfect candidate for the moment to beat Trump. The narrative writes itself. The Prosecutor vs the Felon.
The road ahead is going to be tough, regardless of the president. However, it feels like that road will be a little easier under Harris then it would under Trump.
With Harris, I feel we can start to plan, build, and organize the infrastructure for a better future on the local level, where as Trump we had to focus on the surviving however long he was in power. I'm still weary of Harris because she is still a cop and I still haven't forgotten what she did to trans people when she was DA, but I'd much rather fight against Harris than I would against Trump.
Plus I would like to feel the schadenfreude of Harris kicking Trump's ass on TV. That feels like a PPV fight.

3 weeks ago, when the idea was first going around that Biden needed to step down, and people were speculating on who his replacement should be, I was in the camp that Kamala was not the best choice, and that they should have a "speed round" primary at the convention.
I've now completely changed my feeling on that. Not only does Kamala make the most practical sense now (after Biden dragged out stepping down as long as possible), but I myself have come around to Kamala. The more I thought about it, the more I could imagine her REALLY motivating people to vote. And I personally feel more enthusiastic about voting for her. Seeing how grassroots donations jumped in the hours since she was endorsed, and all the coconut memes on social media; and also thinking about how her being a black woman could actually really work against Trump (as any attacks he does on her will likely get really ugly and alienating to many people)... I'm now at the point where I'll be disappointed if the Dems go with someone else.

For some reason, the media gave out the opinion that Kamala was this super unlikable person who had no chance of beating anyone. Now, with the more enthusiasm she gets, the more she will have the chance to reinvent that. And I think we have to look at her and see the merit that she has. I am a little skeptical of her public speaking abilities (and why TF she hasn't posted anything in her social media to enhance enthusiasm or made any public appearances last night) but ig well see how she does w her upcoming public apperance. Thank you for the clarification about your anarchist position. I work for a Medicaid/Medicare managed care organization in Washington, and as such, I actually *do* believe in the importance of the state as a valid and useful entity. There's a lot of people out there who don't have the physical, emotional, financial, or social resources to contribute to the kind of community organizations you're describing, and that's where people like me come in. But you're not talking about dismantling those structures, you're simply not engaging with them unless it's absolutely necessary. Frankly, that's how it should be. I'm here for the folks who can't do for themselves, because I think they still matter, and I know that you do too. I get really frustrated with the L/libertarians I know, because they *do* want to dismantle those structures and to hell with the people whose lives depend on them. I agree that the welfare state needs major restructuring; it's designed to hold people down instead of helping give a leg up to the ones who can go further. But in the meantime, if the only available options are to help those in need or let them suffer in silence, I'll keep doing what I do. And I'll be here, doing what I can to support you doing what you do, too.

Harris and the Dems represent a short term survival strategy. Necessary, but not sufficient.
For my part, I’m pushing folks to support Harris and the Dems for national offices, while voting Green down ballot. Yes, that’s still engaging the existing structure, but getting a generally Leftist party built up in the US will help to moderate the worst excesses of the establishment hierarchy.
What made the recent election in France work, was the broad coalition built between the Left and Center.

I just want to point out a criticism of Kamala that I really dislike. It goes "I just don't think that the American will put a black woman in the presidents office so we should consider someone else" so let's break down that garbage take.
For starters I think that this is an insult to the electorate. The kind of voters who wouldn't vote for someone just because they are a black woman already have a very clear candidate and I don't think you should be trying to get their vote by pandering to those values. Whilst racism and sexism are widespread that level of transparency in prejudice is a smaller section of the population than the more banal ignorant types of racism and sexism of the average American. When Joe was last voted in I distinctly remember people talking about how they thought he was going to die in office making Kamala president and that people were factoring that into their vote for Biden. In a way the electorate has already toyed with the idea of electing Kamala and they weren't put off by it.
Lastly that take is doing a classic bigoted thing of enacting bigotry and blaming it on the risk of hypothetical bigotry from hypothetical people. A good example of that is when adoption agencies don't approve gay couples out of "fear that this will lead to the child being bullied." It's preemptive discrimination and I'm going to call It what it is in this case. Racism and sexism. Not running her on grounds of gender or race is doing the bad things. "I'm not sexist. I'm just worried other people will be." Is doing sexism whilst denying accountability. It's one of the most garbage type of liberal bigotry. Another example is attacking immigrants at the border and saying "we don't want to do this but we need to fulfill the desires of the American voters." People are responsible for their own policies. Don't let them blame hypothetical racists for things that they do. A black woman can be president.
Edit: Kamala is mixed Black and Asian and this should be better acknowledged

I generally think that on a broad scale, the less of a fixation the democrats (and everyone else who wants to get her elected so we don’t get Trump presidency 2.0) have on Harris’s race and gender the better. In certain contexts it makes sense to push those as selling points, but overly-focusing on the narrative of her being a black woman/first female president/girl power, etc. feels like a mistake. Regardless of whether it’s intended negatively or positively. I think overly focusing on Hillary being the potential first female president was a mistake that off-put voters - not necessarily because they didn’t want to vote for a woman, but because they didn’t want to be told they should vote for her *because* she was a woman. The first thing out of peoples’ mouths when they push for Harris should not be “she’s a black woman.” It should be “she’s going to do a good job.”
And personally, I think she will. I know there are concerns and frustrations, but honestly I think a Harris administration will be better than a Biden one. And although I have some serious criticisms of the Biden administration, they also did a lot of good. And not just for relatively privileged people. I also believe that Harris has done plenty of good throughout her career, and although the negative things do deserve attention… it feels disproportionate. Like we can and should talk about the negative effects of her policies as DA and AG, but we also have to talk about the positive ones, such as legislation that lessened the penalties of smaller crimes in CA (conservatives and even some moderate liberals HATED her for that one).
Looking at her history, it seems like she’s more naturally progressive but has swayed slightly to a moderate democrat position to be politically viable throughout her career. I think I actually trust that more than someone who is more naturally moderate (and old school) who has swayed slightly progressive to be more politically viable, which is how Biden was. Especially considering that both of these sways still put Harris to the left of Biden. She doesn’t strike me as a moderate masquerading as a progressive. She strikes me as someone who is leaning on moderate stances to win over the middle of the road vote… and then when she’s in office we might actually get somewhere. This also feels like it could be the beginning of the changing of the guard that we’ve been promised for too long.
(Sorry for getting off the point and rambling but… clearly I have a lot of thoughts! As do we all! It is at least a relief to have thoughts other than just “shit, how are we going to convince people to vote for Biden a second time when it doesn’t seem like he’s even in a condition to actively run?”)

As someone who's more of an incrementalist moderate (though very socialist on a few matters), there's a lot I disagree in specifics, but the general idea I'm very much on board with.
However, I do just want to quibble on one thing. You say they weren't able to push Biden left. They absolutely did. There's a reason why Bernie Sanders and AOC were on the pro-Biden train. He listened to their concerns more than any other President that Bernie has ever worked with in government. There's a reason why he says all the time that Biden was the most progressive President he's had.
Now, you can certainly argue that they didn't push him left enough and I'd agree with that, even as someone more moderate in my approach to changing things. But he was far more left than anyone we've seen in multiple generations in the White House.

And it's probably just a perception thing, I'll admit, but it does feel like she just has more of a spine to stand up for what she believes in. The things that really bugged me about Biden was a combo of the Israel issue and the "we respect the power of the courts" message after a blatant judicial power grab. And for some reason I have more faith that both of those will improve under Harris, if only a little bit.
The big issue I have with Dems right now is that they are completely complicit in moving things further right, because they concede ground to the right WAY more easily than they'd ever do to the left. I have some faith that Harris can at least hold her ground, if that makes sense.

And the to try and reach the compromise the left somehow always said "Ok I do another step toward you maybe we were wrong". And the other side says "This isn't working, can't we find a middle ground".

For me, my stance on this is that literally no one else could have replaced him and also had a chance of surviving a potential legal challenge a la Bush v. Gore. Harris was on Biden's ticket during the primary. In this way, she is the only person who could be the Democratic nominee and survive that kind of a legal challenge from the right.
I still have my reservations about Harris. While I tend to look at policy over demographic, if we have to look at demographic, I would have preferred a Nina Turner presidency over a Kamala Harris presidency, but that's not going to happen this cycle. And I think that's acceptable for now. Not forever, but for the sake of getting someone competent who won't immediately criminalize queerness, I am fine with Harris.
I was going to vote for Biden in the general, but I admit that I felt like my vote wasn't going to do anything. And I could feel everyone demoralized by this process moreso than normal. The candidate changing to Harris, I feel, will bring a lot of that energy and excitement back.
While I want a better candidate, I'm not so childish as to want what some are suggesting and open up the nomination in the DNC convention. All that would do is tribalize voters and get them to stay home when their tribe doesn't win. At least here, we can at least pretend we're unified.

She legitimately does not have a much better position than Biden, but I believe she can actually BUILD on hers.
And I have to say one thing about Israel: I really hope it clicks in Kamala's head how if she adds "But NOT at the cost of every other life in Palestine, and I can't believe I have to say that!" to "Hamas must be destroyed"... She'd win Gen Z and the millennials over right then and there, be exactly correct, and reframe the discussion like it should be. I want to point out, this will matter a lot to some Palestinians. A lot of people are seeking refuge, and we should be taking as many of those people as we can. Right now we’re taking very few, but some. If Trump is reelected, he will reinstate a full Muslim travel ban. We can fight for Palestinian refugees to be here under Harris. Under Trump, there is no hope for us to help them flee here.

Jessie I hope americans realise that Kamala Harris winning would mean the dark cloud of Project 2025 would be gone, and that should be seen as something worth voting on (matt)

It was never about Biden vs Trump. It was about policies and judges. It was about leadership vs chaos. It was about decency vs despicable actions and words. It was about Rights vs controls. It was about economics for workers vs the wealthy and mega corporations. It was about acceptance vs hatred. It was about reality vs lies. It was about civility vs Civil War. It was about progress vs Project 2025. It was about democracy vs fascism. Guess what...it still is. At this point, I'd vote for a paper cup over the orange Menace and the menacing embarrassment that the Republicans have become, because at this point I'm voting for the policies not a person. Vote Blue...No Matter Who! 💙🗳

I say this as a US resident (greencard holder) who comes from New Zealand.... you want change? Get more than two parties. New Zealand went away from a two party system in the mid 1990s. Suddenly you had a choice, and the politicians had to play well in coalitions. We've only had one single party government since then, and that was under extraordinary circumstances (post lockdown pandemic, and a charismatic leader) .
Anyway that would bring some change to your politics. Not a lot, but better than vote Ass or vote Mammoth uh Democrat or Republican

She's such a superhero. In the way superheroes maintain status quo no matter how bad it is and we cheer them for defending the status quo from someone who would've changed it for something a lot worse.

My perspective is while Kamala isn't a great candidate (I don't agree with her policy on a lot of issues, her history as a cop hurt a lot of black and brown people in this country, and she has a lot of the same fundamental flaws as Biden) she's younger and far more exciting of an option and this feels like the "third pick" so many people have been wanting that's not Joe or Trump. At the worst, she's a lateral move from Joe and the fight is about the same to beat Trump, but at best she's going to invigorate a lot more people to come out and actually vote.
I know it's short term thinking but imo the main goal at the moment needs to be not letting any more republicans into office and having an actionable plan to prevent not just Project 2025 but also the Republican agenda for the future so it doesn't become Project 2026, 2027, etc etc. And I hope that her campaign will bring those plans to light and show she's actually going to do something about it instead of constantly "compromising."

so, i'm canadian. i can't really do anything to help with american politics, but right now, we're in a similar situation. as the saying goes, america sneezes, canada catches a cold. it's interesting because a lot of the discussion about kamela up here is her being this "honorary canadian" because she spent her high school years living in montreal lol. so there's a lot of hope of her being a better fit for us because there's that connection, and if she's elected it could help bolster the liberal or NDP party here

    I love getting your take.
I'm still watching, but i think we feel pretty similarly about her. In the end, she's a slightly more liberal centrist with a history in CA that leftists will absolutely have issues with. I don't love her, she's not my dream candidate. I was skeptical of her becoming the new candidate when it was still an "if."
But I am genuinely excited! There's a buzz and i hope we can keep it up. I'm feeling hope again.
It would also be so sweet to see Trump lose to a mixed race, Black/South Asian woman.
