Bal Gangadhar Tilak was born on 23rd July 1856 in Ratnagiri District Maharashtra to father Gangadhar Shastri and mother Parvati bai. He was educated and had a rationalist attitude. He formed the Deccan Educational Society along with Vishnu Shastri Chiplunkar and Gopal Ganesh Agarkar for instilling in Indian students a feeling of nationalism. He wrote Arctic Home in the Vedas in 1903 and Gita Rahasya in 1915. He joined Indian National Congress in 1890 and was very much actively involved in Swadeshi and Boycott of British goods movement and was jailed from 1908 to 1914 in Mandalay Jail Burma. He was jailed for 18 months on sedition charges for provocating Chapekar brothers to murder WC Rand Lt. Ayerst for their activities during the bubonic plague of Poona. He published Kesari in Marathi and Mahratta in English. For further details watch the video.
