    As an army veteran, I love the dynamic between Sam and Steve. The thing about Sam is that he doesn't treat Steve like Captain America the superhero, he treats him like Steve Rogers the soldier. And the whole back and forth between them in the opening scene is typical of how army guys treat each other.

    there's a big difference between bucky and steve, steve choose to be experimented on, while bucky was captured and given the serum without his permission

    - 13:50 Nat asked Steve to kiss her, just as a distraction to not get detected by Romlow who was coming up the opposite direction. She's not romanticaly involved with Hawkeye; the're just best friends.

      @@jaysontin1850 It kinda is though. Black Widow dated Daredevil, Hawkeye, Iron Man and even Bucky Barnes at one point in the comics. Captain Marvel dated War Machine and Spider-Man, Cap dated Peggy and Sharon, and so on. Heroes get around 😂

    I'm utterly incapable of passing up a Winter Soldier reaction - it's my favorite Marvel movie. And because I'm old, I get to always mention an Easter Egg that I've never seen anyone else bring up.
    When Cap and Nat show up at Sam's door, and Nat says, "Everyone we know is trying to kill us," I believe that's the writers putting in a reference to a movie from the 1970's named Three Days of the Condor. The poster for that movie has a tag line that reads:
    "His CIA code name is Condor. In the next seventy-two hours almost everyone he trusts will try to kill him."
    And the reason they put in an Easter egg reference to that movie is because that movie starred Robert Redford. And Robert Redford is the guy who play Alexander Pierce in The Winter Solder.
    Oh, and also, Robert Redford is the guy from the meme of the dude with the big bushy beard looking at the camera and nodding.

    I was so excited to see the winter soldier reaction in my subscription feed then I was like “WOW I can’t believe we’re already at winter soldier”😄 feels like yesterday they were just starting iron man, I’m so excited for them to keep going for when things get really wild 😎

    Dr. Strange was after this (both in chronology and release order), it was just an Easter egg for Marvel comics fans at the time. It does show how good Zola's algorithm was since it predicted him as someone who would be opposition for HYDRA.

    So glad you weren't spoiled about Bucky. Kudos to you for recognizing him early. As I mentioned in the comments for Thor the Dark World Marvel has a strange bit of continuity in Phase 2. Every movie has a character losing an arm. Bucky in this one, look for it going forward.

    “I haven’t even seen Saw.”
    While Jigsaw does say, “I want to play a game” to his victims, I believe the reference here is to the 1980’s film War Games where the AI computer asks, “Shall we play a game?”

    I do disagree with one statement that Steve was used, to be experimented on but it was his choice to be experimented on and do the procedure. However Bucky was forced against his will

    Great reaction guys. Winter Soldier stands out in a lot of great films. It's definitely one of my favorites. FYI, Doctor Strange was just a name drop because he was a person of interest to Hydra. Strange's first movie wasn't until 2016. Like 5 movies after this one. So you haven't missed a thing. One thing to keep in mind in your release order MCU marathon is that the Disney+ shows are relevant to the overall story arcs to varying degrees, and you may want to watch them alongside the movies in the original release order.
    The first show, WandaVision, comes after Spiderman: Far From Home. Then comes The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, the movie Black Widow, What If...?, the movie Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the movie Eternals, Hawkeye, the movie Spiderman: No Way Home, Moon Knight, the movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Ms. Marvel. Some of the shows are pretty self contained with a few connections to the bigger MCU. Some shows are more vital to watch in this order for certain character stories or MCU connections. It's a lot but I enjoy it all. Have fun with it.

      Don't forget the MCU Netflix shows or even Agents of Shield and Agent Carter, not as important but set in the same universe. Agents of Shield does tie in significantly in it's first seasons though, especially Winter Soldier.

      @@VColossalV Absolutely. You're right. I didn't want to overwhelm them with suggestions, even though I listed a bunch of movies and shows. Agents of Shield has some tie-ins to the MCU overall, especially in the earlier seasons, but I would say they are not as vital for the overall MCU narrative. Still great though. Agent Carter is definitely more relevant to the MCU. But it also takes place in the past, so they can circle around to it later I feel. Thanks for the suggestions.

    This movie is still honestly in my Top 5 of best MCU movies of all time, Winter Soldier was still my number 1 until a lot of phase 3 movies pushed it a little further down the list. I need more of these reactions they are sooo good :)

    This was probably my favorite of your MCU reactions so far. I watched the full reaction on patreon and one thing I loved was how you were pretty much in Batmeg mode trying to figure out who the Winter Soldier was. And I give you major detective points for figuring it out too! Batman would definitely be so proud 😂 Guardians of the Galaxy is another one of my favorites so I can’t wait for your guy’s reaction!     The Dr Strange name drop was just an easter egg in this movie. At this time Dr Strange is a surgeon in NY and no more than that. He comes up later.

    I do think part of this film deals with PTSD and some phases of mourning. Survivor's guilt is really common in veterans dealing with PTSD. Seeing Sam work with the VA and leading support groups is beautiful because more often than not it's other veterans that are best positioned to help their fellow veterans. When I left the Army I related to Steve when Sam asked him "What makes you happy?" as both Steve and I didn't have an answer at the time. Also the name winter soldier is a reference to both the Winter Soldier trials of the Vietnam War and a Thomas Pain quote about "summer solider and sunshine patriots". This movie is my number one Marvel movie and I'm glad to see other people picking up what this movie throws down.

    The idea of THE WINTER SOLDIER is a thread that winds it's way throughout American history. It began on December 24, 1776 at a place called Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. The Continental Army under General George Washington was encamped there. It was a hard winter, and the army was severely underequipped. Many soldiers lost toes, limbs, and even lives to frostbite and hypothermia. To lift the spirits of his men, the General gathered them together and prepared to hand out their mail. But he also took the opportunity to read aloud a pamphlet published by the patriot Thomas Paine. "The American Crisis" which begins:
    "THESE are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered"
    Nearly two centuries later, in 1971, three years after the My Lai massacre, the protest group Vietnam Veterans Against the War held The Winter Soldier press conference where veterans gave depositions which revealed a pattern of war crimes, atrocities, and racism so pervasive they could only be official policy. It led to Congressional investigation and contributed to widespread sentiment against the war.
    A similiar conference was held in 2008 concerning Iraq & Afghanistan. The spirit of the Winter Soldier lives on within the American Dream.

    I read online that there was originally supposed to be a scene with Hawkeye. Like he was going to be one of the people sent after Cap and eventually the two would face off, leaving an impression Hawkeye was actually Hydra. But then during the fight he would whisper something to Cap like "make it look good" showing he was loyal to him and only doing it to be a sort of double agent inside Hydra.

    Project Insight recognises future threats, so it knows Stephen Strange will be a threat to Hydra even though he's not a sorcerer yet.

    The directors said that the scene with Steve at Peggy's bedside was something that Steve did, either every day or week (I can't remember which) when he's in town, even though she never remembers.

    Ha! That was so cool that no one spoiled you on who the Winter Soldier was.
    Captain America is never nationalistic or jingoistic. As Erskine reminded him before he died, he always tries to stay "a good man." He's gone against the government and even quit when he disagreed with the government in the comics. They made him leave his shield and they took the name "Captain America" and gave it and the shield to someone else. Steve didn't stop being Steve though, he just didn't do it under the name Captain America. I can't remember the name he went under. Maybe...Nomad? Not sure.

    Fury's full name is Nicholas Joseph Fury. Do not EVER call him by his full name, unless you are a family member, he WILL murder you for it. In fact one of his family members in the comics was a member of a villainous group called the Serpent Society.
    One of the biggest surprises of this movie was
    1. HYDRA being embedded inside SHIELD for the last 70 years, and
    2. Not only is the Winter Solider a tool of HYDRA's, he also happens to be a former Howling Commando and Steve's best friend, Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes!
    Critically and fan-wise, this was one of the greatest surprises in the MCU, and the thrid Captain America movie as well, but we'll get to THAT after you guys have seen it, because......wow!
    Cap has the greatest trilogy in the MCU so far, and that's thanks to the Russo Bros directing and staging and plotting and executing this so damn well!

    Hey, Meg and Caleb! Marvel films hit their stride with "Winter Soldier" and it remains one of the highest regarded films in the saga. The movie represents a tonal shift in the MCU towards mature, gritty storytelling with real-world consequence which roped in many non-superhero enthusiasts. It was made in the style of 1970s political thrillers like "Three Days of the Condor" and "The Parallax View" with a healthy dose of "The Manchurian Candidate". As with all the best espionage films, the story was expertly filled with twists, double-crosses, skullduggery and shocking revelations culminating with an incredible race-against-the-clock crisis. Showing Captain America break faith with the institutions he serves due to his disillusionment with systemic corruption is extraordinary and demonstrates his integrity. The plot is drawn from 'The Winter Soldier' arc of Ed Brubaker's legendary 134-issue run on "Captain America" during the 2000s. Paired with the moody, naturalistic illustrations of Steve Epting, the duo revitalized the character and his supporting cast for post-modern readers. The bold move of resurrecting Bucky Barnes and reframing his legacy was a stroke of brilliance that left an impactful mark on latter-day Marvel comics. The element of SHIELD being infiltrated by subversives is drawn from the 1988 limited series "Nick Fury vs. SHIELD" written by Bob Harras and illustrated by Paul Neary. The Triskelion as the headquarters for SHIELD was lifted directly from Marvel's secondary Ultimate Universe line although the film locates it in DC on the Potomac whereas the comics set it in New York Harbor. Similarly, the technological interpretation of Falcon is a nod to the Ultimate iteration of the character whereas the original Marvel iteration can telepathically communicate with birds and has a glider harness with mylar wings and titanium ribbing.
    Co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo were untested filmmakers who landed the plum gig after Kevin Feige saw their two-episode stint on the TV sitcom "Community"! Nevertheless, the brothers knocked this film out of the park and were tapped again to continue guiding the good Captain's adventures down the line. The action sequences are phenomenally staged but grounded enough that you feel the weight of each impact and only realize you're watching a superhero film when Steve intermittently exceeds human limits. The opening hostage rescue, the Fury ambush, the sniper attack, the elevator brawl, the Quinjet takedown, the freeway chase, the underpass shoot-out and the climactic Triskelion assault are all top-tier set pieces that are thrilling to watch! Despite wall-to-wall action, there is enough downtime to prevent fatigue, to advance plot like Hydra's insidious long-game and to build character like Steve's bedside scene with a senile Peggy. I especially like the use of the real-life 'Operation: Paperclip' in which 1,500 Nazi scientists and engineers were granted immunity and recruited by the CIA's precursor, the OSS, to work for the US government. In the film, Hydra scientists like Arnim Zola use the opportunity of this brain-drain to embed themselves in SHIELD from its very inception.
    The cast is remarkable. Steve Rogers comes into sharp focus here and Chris Evans truly made the Captain his own the third time around. Carrying over from "The First Avenger", Sebastian Stan returns as a grimly resurrected James Buchanan 'Bucky' Barnes, Toby Jones lends his voice to the disembodied digital form of Dr. Arnim Zola and Hayley Atwell briefly appears as an aged Peggy Carter. Anthony Mackie makes a strong, likable impression as Sam Wilson aka Falcon as does Emily Van Camp as undercover Agent 13. They join returning allies Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow, Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill and Samuel L. Jackson as Col. Nick Fury who gets showcased in a hair-raising action sequence all his own! Having an actor of Robert Redford's stature play Alexander Pierce was not only a casting coup but paid tribute to his role in "Three Days of the Condor"! Rounding out the villain roster is Frank Grillo as a pre-Crossbones Brock Rumlow and UFC welterweight champion Georges St.-Pierre as French mercenary Georges Batroc the Leaper, two traditional Cap antagonists. Callan Mulvey plays the itchy trigger-fingered double-agent Jack Rollins. Maximiliano Hernandez as Agent Jasper Sitwell, who was introduced in "Thor" and was seen throughout the saga in films, One-Shots and "Agents of SHIELD" episodes, is revealed as a Hydra sleeper along with Garry Shandling as Senator Stern returning from "Iron Man 2". The head of Hydra himself, Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, played by Thomas Kretschmann, puts in a cameo for the end-credit scene as do the Maximoff twins Pietro and Wanda played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen. World Security Council members leave their shadowed holo-conference screens to show up in person this time with European representative Hawley, played by Jenny Agutter, being the only returnee from "Avengers". North American Councilman Rockwell is played by Alan Dale, South Asian Councilman Singh is played by Bernard White and East Asian Councilman Yen is played by Chin Han. Steven Culp and Nestor Serrano have bit parts as irate Congressional Committee members who grill Natasha. Gary Sinise lends his voice to the Captain America Smithsonian exhibit as narrator.
    TRIVIA:
    1. Nick Fury relates that his grandfather was an elevator operator which is what Samuel L. Jackson's real-life grandfather did for a living.
    2. When Alexander Pierce opens his refrigerator, a jar of Newman's Own sauce is clearly visible as an homage to the two times Redford and Paul Newman shared the screen.
    3. Steve's catch-up list differed by country but had seven fixed items: Thai food, Star Wars, Star Trek, Nirvana, Rocky, Rocky II and Troubleman. The countries for which items were added to the list include the US, the UK, Australia, Italy, France, Spain, Russia, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking countries of South America collectively.
    4. Nick Fury's tombstone bears the epitaph "The path of the righteous man. Ezekiel 25:17". This was Jules Winnfield's favorite verse in "Pulp Fiction", a character Jackson is famous for playing.
    5. The Winter Soldier's moniker comes from the Thomas Paine quote that "the summer soldier and sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman." 'He' is the winter soldier, the inverse of 'the summer soldier'.
    EASTER EGGS:
    1. When Steve and Natasha enter the old SHIELD headquarters at Camp Lehigh, they find portraits of SHIELD's three founders: Colonel Chester Phillips, Howard Stark and Peggy Carter.
    2. Sitwell reveals Zola's algorithm is targeting potentially problematic persons of interest like Bruce Banner and Stephen Strange. This is the first reference to Doctor Strange in the saga.
    3. Agent 13's real name is revealed as Sharon by Natasha. This hints at her familial tie to another MCU character for comic readers who know the implication of the name.
    4. Although corrupt in the film, Jack Rollins is the actual name of a heroic SHIELD agent from the "Nick Fury vs. SHIELD" comics who alerts Fury to the enemy infiltration.
    CAMEOS:
    1. Co-director Joe Russo plays the underground doctor tending to Nick Fury during the scene where he reveals he's alive.
    2. Captain America scribe Ed Brubaker plays the bearded Hydra scientist tending to the Winter Soldier during the scene where Pierce orders his mind wiped.
    3. Stan Lee plays the Smithsonian security guard who discovers that Cap's World War II uniform has been stolen.
    END-CREDIT SCENES:
    1. Hydra leader Baron Wolfgang von Strucker plots to sacrifice minor Hydra cells to the ensuing manhunt while consolidating remaining resources to advance their research on the Chitauri Scepter and the two surviving guinea pigs of their human experimentation, the Maximoff twins, who are seen exploring their nascent abilities to move faster than the eye can see and to manipulate objects telekinetically.
    2. Bucky visits the Captain America exhibit at the Smithsonian to learn about his and Steve's past.
    The next chronological stop in the MCU are Episodes 17 - 22 of Season 1 of "Agents of SHIELD" which complete the first season of the show.

    I’ve watched these movies with family who’ve never seen them before and seen a lot of reactions. Meg predicting every twist in these movies is not normal & im salty 😂. i can’t believe how good you are! bucky being winter soldier, fury being alive, falcon having powers, pierce being the villain lol and you do this in almost every movie. it is really impressive

    No... The first Doctor Strange movie is set after this. But of course, Stephen Strange was still a Doctor at this time. It's an Easter Egg. It's seeding that Doctor Strange is coming. Having the Marvel Comics Universe (also an MCU) to call on means that so much stuff can be pre-planned. They have 60-80 years of ideas and stories from the comics to use at any time. For example in the comics it took them decades to come up with the idea that Bucky was still alive... but in the movies they knew when they killed him that he was coming back (cuz of the comics.)

    Zola's algorithm basically predicts who could potentially stop them or be a hindrance to them at any stage of their world takeover. Stephen Strange even without someone with superpowers doesn't feel like someone who would conform to Hydra's world. Top class surgeon, with genius intellect if not directly, he still would a hindrance to Hydra's world takeover in the medical industry. Zola's algorithm would basically target anyone with potential signs of being a threat with one of the most simple filters being someone aligned to good and genius level intellect.

    Doctor Strange became a Sorcerer after this movie (2016...and has nothing to do with Zola's prediction)...Arnim Zola's algorithm predicted Stephen Strange as a threat to Hydra by examining bank records, medical histories, voting patterns, emails, phone calls, and even SAT scores, so it "evaluates people's past to predict their future."
    After all, Dr Strange was a top NeuroSurgeon with recognition all over the world with a lot of tallent!!!
    The way Tony Stark is to Engineering...Stephan Strange is to BioTech, NeuroScience or Surgeory...certainly he can be seen as threat by Zola's AI algorithm...and we don't know, but its also possible that Stephan Strange must have been SHIELD's secret intrest and might have secretly tried to recruit him sometime in the past!

    This is in my top 5 MCU films. Love it. I mean I'm Team Cap (you dont have to be American to love Cap! Im Scottish)all the way anyway, but I just love how different this is, and how important it is to the wider MCU.
    I actually have phase 1 and 2 in the DVD boxed set, with the art work etc. There aren't many films I buy on DVD now, but the MCU, especially up until Endgame were a 'counting down til it's released ' deal.
    I only found your reactions a couple days ago, and I'm loving them, you 2 are too cute.

    Howdy! I like the software update! When I open the Description Box, the numbers spin! Meg, do you use contact lenses when not using your spectacles? I used to use contacts, but now I only have spectacles. I don't use them most of the time when I use my smartphone. Instead, I prefer to hold it up close to my eyes. 😉

    As time goes by, Cap becomes less "golden retreiver" and more like a stoic Doberman you don't want to mess with if you're a badguy, but it makes him more badass!
    Avengers Cap: We have orders. We should follow them.
    Winter Soldier: If this doesnt feel right, Im gonna rebel. Oh, it's HYDRA! Time to disobey orders and save the world!
    Steve's progression from dutiful soldier to to heroic maverick is legendary! He wanted to join the Army to help fight the Nazis, but because he has a moral compass, there are lines that he knows he shouldn't cross, and that was really how it set this movie in motion.
    In my head, I think Fury sent him to the Lemurain Star boat BECAUSE he knew something was up with Project Insight, and he secretly needed Cap to sort of be a barometer for how to proceed from there, but it's never really obvious in the movie.

    Whiles it’s pretty hilarious, I don’t really think that Cap can be classified as a himbo or a golden retriever lol. He just makes a conscious effort to forego sneaking around and handling issues with lies and deceit like other SHIELD operatives would. If there’s a problem Cap just deals with it straight up.
