I'm going on 75 your little jon did amazing in the rough. I run a 15.5 25hp evinrude with dolphin hydrofoil i installed last week. I took it out in 18 mph winds and the lake with serious chop lake talquin Florida. My boat also stick steer. I could slice thru at 23 mph without any side rocking. I did this speed just testing for about 1/8th mile then cut it back down to 18 mph to make the bow hammering the waves gentler .
Last week I was in my 1436 Jon with a 15hp mercury going full throttle across a big lake paralleling a good 50 feet or so from the edge trying to get back in because the wind picked up. I didn't see some waves coming at me from a shallower area as I approached a cove. A larger boat had probably just left and made a big wake. By the time I realized it, I was almost on top of the wave, parallel with it. There was no way I could hit the wave head on. The wave picked the boat up and tilted it beyond 45 degrees to the right. Luckily I was sitting on the left so I leaned away from it and my weight prevented the boat from going over. I slowly backed off the throttle, and was able to steer away from the wave. I slowed down and had to get my wrench to unclench my butt cheeks. You got a lot of balls being out there in that weather. I can almost feel every jump in your video.
My 1236 12 footer with a 9.9 suziki gets quite hairy on lake champlain when a North wind picks up.....I've had to use the ol but unleashing wrench a few times in the last 10 years
Good job you turned around when you were uncomfortable. I’ve been boating most of my 67 years and it still amazes me how fast water can go to swells in so short a time when the wind picks up.
@@5050fishing thanks bro, bc I just bought the 12v 55lb 48” shaft Minn kota riptide PowerDrive troller motor today and I was worried about the shaft length
Believe it or not I saw some one in Galveston Bay when there was 4 ft seas in the bay in a jon boat this size. I also have a 1436 but was on a 39 ft boat with a guide. I wouldn't have been out there in the jon boat.
If your ever looking into getting skinny I thought this would be a good idea you could get a little 13hp predator mud skipper Thai long tail kit with some gator glide or steel flex slick bottom if your looking to go the chap route plus it makes trailering so much easier
That's exactly what I did. I put a mud skipper twister kit on a 13hp Honda (stage 1) and mounted it to my 1542 tracker flat bottom. I go EVERYWHERE. If the boat floats, it's deep enough for the motor. I have been fishing ceasars creek lately (north side where the actual creek creates the lake). The other night I went to throw out the anchor only to realize I was in about 10" of water. Lol. Tanners creek/lower great Miami/whitewater are all on my list.
New subscriber.. Trying to determine 1436 vs. 1448.... How do you think a 1448 would handle that chop, vs. your 1436 ? I fish mostly a medium ( 800-900 acre) lake, and the wind/whitecaps can really get going (like it's own weather system out there)...I wouldn't want to get hung up on the far end...thanks
Lol had worse conditions with 3 people in the boat on lake Murray in SC right after I got my first little 1436. Have not made that mistake since, thought we were going under for sure
You go in the river this time of year good chance your not getting back in your boat. That cold water will shock the hell out of you and take ur breath away.
I have the same boat, with a Merc 15hp. Does pretty good, but I definitely can feel when the waves are worse or the dam generators are going. There’s one section in an oxbow that the turbulence always seems like it fishtails the boat some.
That's one of those b hole puckering rides that let you know your limits. Had one out on Deer Creek with the pleasure boaters ripping on a Sunday with bad winds.
@@5050fishing M starcraft is more of a modified V. Its a deep V in the front but flat towards the back so once you get up on plane, it's just like a Jon boat. My 16 will do 30mph with a 30 HP Suzuki.
Jon boats are designed for flat, shallow water. That's why almost nobody even bothers to sell them where I live. Lakes tend to be large and open, the Missouri River is a prime fishing destination and the winds can go from 5 mph to 20 mph in just minutes. That's why everyone buys 16' or larger v-hulls with lots of freeboard.

Yeah I wasn’t risking it. Maybe in my deep V lol
the Beach Boys had a song or 2 about surfing, right? I think you may have forgotten a fishing pole at home, eh? lol
I has the poles but it was to rough to fish where I wanted to :( haha.
@@5050fishing I only saw 8. Lol

A 1448 would definitely handle it better but I’ve had my 1436 in some nasty stuff. It really just depends on what you’re comfortable with
I know I do love mine same set up but I fish a real stump filled lake and I've been thrown out twice. Of course, both times I had a few.
That sounds sketch. I hit a stump one time and it wasn’t fun lol

Yea... I couldn’t even go where I wanted because of how bad the one wide section was.
Nice video!!
Thank you 🙏
That's why a v Hull design works better. Same weight/same horsepower. That boat can't take big waves.
A vhull the same size would be less stable and slower
