I trout fish during the colder months and carry two of those hand warmers, one in a side pocket of my coat and one in a chest pocket. Works really well to help keep me warm.
I'm a rain hail and shine motorcyclist, I've used chemical hot pockets in my breast pockets of my leather jacket. I live in Australia, but I forget windchill is a factor, and have found my hands turning blue then purple in the cold winter nights, especially if it rains (my kit isn't waterproof, if it rains I'm drenched to the bone, because I'm low IQ and never learn) - I've been meaning to buy better winter / wet weather riding gear but then I see the price and it never happens. Would this in a breast pocket keep my core temp above hypothermia?
I’ve used these a few times a year for maybe 10 years now. I’ve lit it & had it in my pocket while cross-country skiing, hiking during the winter, & snow-blowing. They work really well & do indeed go for 12 hrs! I’ve filled them 1/2 way & they’ve gone 6 hours, too.
Quick tip: You can actually turn off the warmer by placing it in a zip lock bag, squeezing all the air out and suffocating the catalyst. I do it all the time and It saves me from wasting fuel. 🙂
As far as I can tell, these are for designed for outdoor use and therefore any indoor odour issue is negated. I guess if it where an emergency like highlighted in your opening gambit about power outage issues then a slight smell of lighter fuel might be a inconvenience you could put up until the power was restored.
@@parristx I found out since I run my svea 123R with alkalkyt 4 due to the same reason. I would even with less smell still carry a ziplock so you can shut it down by depriving it of oxygen and also stopping all fuel from evaporating. You can also diy new catalysator pieces if you buy platinum wool which is commonly used for those ethanol inhouse furnances. Pretty cheap. And depending on how much you stuff inside you can increase the heat output.
Well this is a bit outdated and its only been 8 months. But we are now looking at $24 for the hand warmer and $3 for the 4 oz fuel. Fun fact. The zippo fuel and hand warmer fuel is the same thing, and they advertize that the hand warmers will run in both. Additionally 12 oz of zippo fuel was $7 as oposed to the 4 oz hand warmer fuel for $3.
It doesn't look like you lit it properly. You are supposed to hold the flame to each hole individually until lit. Im sure you only lit one part of the wick. I could be wrong but you didn't seem to hold the flame still and it didn't warm up very much.

Great tip- I will give that a try. Thanks!
Oh yes, use a zip lock bag because it's a Zippo warmer.
You didn’t light it with a zippo what a shame
Agree indoor not so great like home because of the fumes. But awesome as a backup. Just make sure to have plenty of ventilation
You would have zero chance of being harmed. A candle gives off more fumes

The smell depends a bit on the fuel you put inside. Alkalyt 4 will almost have no smell
Thanks- good to know!

Could you drop a link to this stuff? I can’t find it!
Great review. I’ve got one of these arriving in the mail today for an extended outdoor trip.

Wow, it has been an expensive year. Thanks for the price updates!
The Coleman camp fuel is also the same and a looooot cheaper than anything labeled zippo. 👌
@@baileymoto I use Coleman fuel in mine too.
Looking forward to the Hot Hands review!
Thanks Samantha! I am testing them out right out during what might be the last cold spell we have this winter.
Another fantastic video, Parris! Hope you're doing well!
Thanks Ross! I am actually enjoying the last of the winter weather here. Far too soon the heat will arrive and will stay till November.
Wonderful review
The pouch also restricts and controls the amount of oxygen that can reach the catalytic
I use white spirits
Where con i get this colour!!
when it's really cold, take it out of the pouch
I think you do need to be careful if your hands are so cold they are numb. You don't want to burn yourself without realizing it.
All ways get spare heating elements, been using these for years,
you do not have to let it run out till the fuel is gone
Get a 6 hour instead of the 12 hour

😄🔥🔥🔥
Glad to see this review. I think I'll pass on this item. Seems like a hazard to me.
