That was mostly the decision of the game show's producers and not Vannas. They would dress her the way they wanted. The 80s looks on tv were pretty bad. Women had much more natural beauty on their own. The tv people probably thought Vanna naturally looked too sexy so they changed her as network tv was trying to be ultra-conservative in the 80s. I would think that Alanis Morrisette would be more suited to this list than Crystal. He really WAS already famous from Soap. During the first season, before I started watching the show, his was one of the only two cast member's names I knew (the other being Diana Canova).
In response to sex money drugs...If that's the argument, then where is David Letterman? He did Password Plus as a "celebrity" in 1979, well before the pinnacle of his career.
I'm calling bullshit on Billy Crystal and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Crystal had a starring role in "Soap" back in the 70's. You state right in your video that he appeared on game shows as a celebrity panelist. As for Arnold, he had already made a name for himself as a body building champion and I believe he had been in two movies by then as well.
Arnold Schwarzenegger had even appeared on a Lucille Ball show as well.....totally with ya on this and on Billy Crystal as well....he was mega famous due to Soap

Future Baltimore Ravens coach Brian Billick was on Match Game, and absolutely stunk! Also, if you count wrestling, Nick Bockwinkel cleaned up as a contestant on Hollywood Squares before becoming a four-time world's heavyweight champion.
I never knew that Vanna White, the hostess of "Wheel of Fortune" (one of my favorite game shows), was on "The Price is Right" (another one of my favorite game shows) three years before she was made into a household name. Behind-the-scenes connections between game shows just amaze me. In fact, after Charlie O'Donnell died, two of the announcers who took over for him before Jim Thornton took over announcing duties on "Wheel of Fortune" were Johnny Gilbert (the announcer of "Jeopardy!") and Rich Fields (the announcer of "The Price is Right" at the time).
Billy Crystal? Billy Crystal appeared as a celebrity on all those shows. He does not belong on this list. "Soap" brought him his initial fame. He was terrific in it. If he hadn't been so popular he wouldn't have been on so many shows.
MaeNoEast...Well, that's not necessarily true. It isn't as if game shows, even back then, were filed with A-list celebrities. They were up and coming celebrities (like Crystal), has beens, and fringe celebrities. Just like today's game show celebrities. Back then, you also had another category of Soap Opera actors. But that sort of fits in with fringe celebrities. Billy Crystal was on those shows because he WASN'T that popular after Soap went off the air, and he wanted to do anything both for a paycheck and to stay visible. (He had to take a tiny role as a mime in This is Spinal Tap. So it isn't as if he was in huge demand between Soap and Saturday Night Live.) That being said...he still WAS the celebrity player and not a contestant, so including him in this video is just plain stupid.
That was Rodney Alcala, not Ted Bundy, and the girl rejected the date with him for being too "creepy" so no, Rodney did not kill her. If you are going to say crap, at least get it right.
@Lloyd Bonafide yes, weird, since when searching anything that might bring up that connection, I get nothing that confirms what you are trying to say. It was a nice try, though.
@Lloyd Bonafide Alcala's episode of the show came out in late 1978. Ted Bundy was captured for the final time in the beginning of February 1978, so there is no way he could have done what you claim. At least check timelines before your inner conspiracy theorist comes out.
Kirstie Alley kissed the father of the current Captain Kirk (Chris Pine), Robert Pine (Sgt. Getraer on "CHiPs") after winning the Head-to-Head Match. Less than three years later, she would be starring with the original Captain Kirk, William Shatner in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." Hmmmmmmmmm.
Jake Roberts Yes, she did. Several months after she did MG. The celebrities during her appearances (yes, she became a champion) were the legendary Lucille Ball and her former TV boyfriend (during the first season of "The Lucy Show"), Dick Martin, himself a TV legend ("Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In"). Here's one that may surprise you. The late wrestler Nick Bockwinkel appeared as a contestant in a 1968 episode of the original "The Hollywood Squares."
Look out! Your youth is showing again. YOU may not remember Billy Crystal prior to his movies and his part in the hysterical sitcom, Soap, but he was already well known as a stand-up comedian before any of that happened. And, yes, at that time stand-up comedians WERE famous. Much more so than today.
How does Kathy Najimy not make the list or even an honorable mention? She was a civilian contestant on at least three game shows - Family Feud in 1981, Wheel of Fortune in 1984, and $25,000 Pyramid in 1985.
Heather Graham appeared as a contestant on "Scrabble," hosted by Chuck Woolery. She appeared even after she had already done a bit part in the last few episodes of "Twin Peaks," but was still relatively unknown.
I second that Billy Crystal shouldn't be on this list. He was on these game shows as a CELEBRITY, not a contestant. Also, Aaron Paul is the right choice for #1, but WM dropped by the ball by not showing the reveal of his showcase amount. He was over by a mere $132.
you could actually make a Part 2 of this: Patty Duke was a contestant on a game show as a child: Mel Harris (thirtysomething), David (police academy) Graf, Bonnie (we've got it made) Urseth, and the Pine Sol Lady were all contestants on Pyramid, Brianne Leary was on Match Game, Oingo Boingo were on The Gong Show, Ally (Breakfast Club) Sheedy was on To Tell The Truth, and I know there were others on The Dating Game, one of which was, tragically, a serial killer!
The Oingo Boingo performance on The Gong Show was the show's finest moment! It was back when they were The Mystical Knights of... and had Danny Elfman's brother leading the band. My last ex, a huge Oingo Boingo fan, taught me all of this.
Now that I've worked in the industry most my life, I can say the title of this video should be "10 people that were placed on game shows to help them become famous celebrities".

@Sarah Hughes, it is, especially when the woman is a couple of stocks short of a portfolio, and just given something to read. That's what I hate about these type of channels/videos, I'd bet if you'd ask WatchMojo to name this woman without looking it up, I think they would fail, as she's probably just a voice actor they hired for this particular video. Or I could be completely wrong, too... 😂😂😂
Omg! I totally forgot about that "I'm Telling" game show!!! Would've never even slightly remembered it until watching the clip of Paul and his sister playing! Wow, I feel so old! Lol
Billy Crystal was a game show celebrity, you were probably not alive then so you don't understand. But I think this distinction would exclude him from your list. Certainly I knew who he was before Soap, and so would anybody who watched television regularly at that time.
Like most game show "celebrities" of that time, Billy Crystal was a "C" list celebrity who would have bit TV parts here or there, but in order to make a living, got paid to be on game shows and be called a celebrity. It was because of this exposure, he got bigger and bigger parts, SNL, movie roles, and became an "A" list celebrity.
@@chag2013 It'd be a stretch to say game show exposure had anything to do with him getting to 'A' list. He was pretty well known from Soap and then being on SNL made him a household name. Erick Horton; Chris H; Stick Man; agree with You living at the time also. Billy was already a known stand-up comedian before Soap, but he became more known in more households through his role on that series. Don't agree he was a "C" list celebrity, though his popularity continued to rise in the early version of SNL [pre-NBC], and then "Harry Met Sally" films. He still is a top known comedian, though many younger people may not know of all of his carrier, especially the game show appearances. :-)
Appearing on games shows used to be a way for young male and female actors to showcase themselves on TV. Most of the them featured in this post were active in showbiz and some were the children of established stars or related to them. They were encouraged by their agents to do so and usually gave a false job description with the full knowledge of the shows' makers. It gave the young actors valuable experience before an audience and being in a TV studio, provided the producers with good looking and presentable contestants and provided their agent swith something to show any future employers.
IDK if that's really the case in America, but I did find it suspect that they described Simon Cowell as they did because he was already an A&R man working for a record company. He was the one who signed Curiosity Killed the Cat with a major label, which means he and the late Andy Warhol (who championed the band shortly before he died) share one thing in common.
This is the first time I've seen Vanna White, and I'm surprised that she looked better on ''The price is right'', when she didn't have a team handling her look.
Olly Murs in 2012 returned to deal or no deal for charity. He done even worse than the £10 he won the first time on the show. he won just 50p for charity.
Kirstie Alley was also a contestant on "Password Plus", in 1979 I believe. When she was on the show, one of the celebrities she played with happened to be none other than early TV legend Lucille Ball. Alley ended up only winning $800 on the show.
I do know that Amanda Holden - the British actress, TV presenter, and judge of Britain's Got Talent - appeared on the British version of The Dating Game, which is known as Blind Date before she became famous.
Michael Horton on Press Your Luck. He would later go on to be Gemini on the original American Gladiators. Jennie Jones on the same show. She would later go on to get her own daytime talk show.
I love the way these videos are edited :) I recently started my own channel and I would love if anyone can tell what video editing software they use. Thank You!
