I change the names of the people in my story time videos because I do NOT want a witch hunt. I'm telling my stories NOT because I want justice or I'm angry. Trust me on that. I'm telling them so you guys can learn from my mistakes. PLEASE do not send hate on to other people because of a hunch. :(

GeneMations is like to know who this “celebrity” is because let’s be honest, nobody likes a thief. If you cheat and scam people, you have nobody to blame but yourself if they call you out and expose the truth. It’s like everyone is afraid to stick up for themselves.

A couple of things should have happened. The first being negotiating the price and how much you would get for the animation. If they wanted to pay you $200 for a 3-minute animation then you would give them $200 worth of quality. Nothing more. The second one being the revisions. On the rare occasions I do animation commissions I always watermark my videos that I send for review with obnoxious symbols to prevent anyone from uploading or using my work without my permission. The most common one being a 25% opacity WIP in the center of the screen.
I'm also curious if the finished animation was a frame-by-frame animation. It seems you use tweens fairly regularly with puppet rigs. But that is only my impression from this video

I can actually understand where the 20k would come from.
3 minutes of animation on ones is about 4300 frames to be drawn. At 30 minutes to draw each, that'd be about 2100 hours of work. 10 bucks an hour. . .that becomes 21,000 dollars of work. Full animation is *expensive*.
It's NOT cartoons and vodka people Den said it was a 3 min video cartoons and vodka is 4 min....
This makes me so furious! Especially how this is a common practice for bigger companies (and smaller). Thanks for sharing your experience!

You could sue them on the basis that the promised exposure was either not delivered or not sufficient to make up for the difference between $1/hr and minimum wage. I don't know if it would work or not, but it's worth asking your local ambulance chaser.

ZenHorakti She would be claiming that they were in breach, that her accepting "exposure" was on the premise that the publicity would generate enough business to offset the below-minimum-wage base price, and that by not adequately publicizing her as the artist, she received zero benefit rather than roughly... well, in 2014 she would have been out 200+hrs @ $8/hr - $200 ≈ $1400+. If they haven't provided at least that value in publicity then they are either afoul of NY state labor laws or in breach themselves.
And they can't sue her for breach unless she's not allowed to publicize her having done the work (which runs counter to the "exposure"-as-payment elements) or she makes public claims about this that didn't actually happen. From the level of interaction they clearly knew how much time she was putting in, and per this she did tell them up front when she was trying to negotiate the deadline. As long as she's not directly asking for a share of the proceeds, and claims are based on inadequate value of the "exposure" she received relative to minimum wage for the work done, she might have a case. If she didn't need money to pay for court fees and a lawyer to argue the case, she could in theory be asking for more valuable "exposure".
The questions for the court would be (1) does minimum wage apply when the contract does not specify an hourly wage, and (2) how is the value of "exposure" to be measured for that purpose? For the first question, it should be noted that when authors paid strictly in royalties do promotion for their books, the IRS considers the time they spend promoting as "employment" rather than "freelance", and considers a certain amount per hour as "income earned from work" instead of "royalties", and taxes that amount at a higher rate.
Then again, the IRS doesn't require filing a 1099 for contractors paid less than $500 in a given calendar year, and also hasn't set any precedents on the taxability of "exposure" or other personal services of subjective value. Since what Den was paid initially was below the threshold for IRS and NYS DoT&F awareness, she might not want to be the one to bring this sort of thing to their attention...

The lawyer isn't for after signing, mate, is for prior consult, to help making clear exactly what that contract is stating and if it's in accordance with how contracts like that are usually written. A half decent lawyer with some experience in the creative market could help her realize the contractors true intentions and help her to make a more informed decision

I am with you on this. While I would like to know which video it is, it is not for the reason some are looking. Ok, I am actually shocked at how much drawing it takes to animate a second. I knew it took a long time with a team of people, but oh my gosh. My respect for animators just increased a lot
