Bic chrome Platinum double edge razor is really good I've currently started to shave I bought my self a nice DE razor and I decided to get lots of Bic Chrome Platinum blades never had experience with anything involving shaving but after one shave using the Bic blades I can already tell they are very very good.
So much about wet shaving comes down to skin types, hair types, and personal preferences. I did as is commonly suggested and got a sample pack. Currently loving Astra Superior Platinum blades, and could see myself using them most often, but definitely gonna try a lot of other blades. It's fun and keeps the hobby exciting to me.
Whoa, I just returned to wet shaving after years of cartridge razor use. I tried the Kai in my Rockwell T2 this morning and it was mind-numbingly smooth and ultra sharp. What a blade! Thanks.

I kind of did what you did with a smaller sample pack, and had my wife do the same since she switched to DE. Luckily, we both agreed on the same blade, and stocked up on Astra Green (from you). Great video.
I've only used Feather, Astra Green, Gillette Platinum and Nacet and I found them the same as you. I'm using a Feather Poplular razor. The Feather blade was sharp but harsh feeling, the Asta green was smoother but less sharp. The Gillettes are by far my favorites, with the Nacet getting a slight nod over the Platinum. They're very sharp yet smooth, no irritation at all. The lightest of touches works wonders ! Of course, like you mentioned, my technique has changed and improved since the original Feather blades.
I’m very close to you. With a Rockwell T2 and a 6C….my favorite blades are 1.) Nacet…2.) Feather. 3.) Voskhod…and 4.) Astra SP. Like you also, I found the Gillette Nacet and Gillette Platinum to be very close to each other….with the Nacet being just a little smoother shave.

Treet platinum is definitely my favourite. There's very few blades to choose from here in Pakistan. It's good to see the treet up there with some of the best. Loved the video, amazing review as always.
Im new to De shaving, i have purchased a Muhle R89 twist & a Gillette fatboy. The Muhle blade that came with the razor felt like it had been used 10 times already, i put a Derby Extra in the fatboy set on 5 and that felt like a plough & got some small nicks. Same blade in the Muhle was awesome, not aggressive, really smooth & close shaving. Now I've ordered a sample pack & and can't wait to see what works best for me.
I love the Kai blades. They are expensive but I find I can get a good five shaves out of a blade without any feeling of tugging or harshness. I also really like that there is not branding on the actual blades themselves. I don't know what that appeals to me. I guess I just admire the quiet confidence the company has in its brand. Any way, love your videos and your store.
When I started shaving 12ish years ago I quickly settled on Astra Greens. I kept those and the same razor for that whole time. Just recently started getting into vintage Gillette razors and am now experimenting with new blades. Gillette Silver Blues are quickly becoming a favorite, especially in by 54' flare tip.
So far, my two favorites are Voskhod and Perma-Sharp. The Konsul loves them both on my skin. But actually, the Konsul is happy with anything I've fed it. 😊

Derby are made in Turkey. I find the premium much better than the normal extra. The Treet Platinum blades are very well priced over here in Thailand, at under $10 for 200. I love Ladas blades for a mild yet very comfortable shave and Bic Chrome Platinum when that extra sharpness is needed without the initial roughness of a Feather. Also, SharpStar are wonderful for my use case. My takeaway from this is that I need to try the German Wilkinson Sword and Trig.
Just tried Gillette Platinum blades based on Matt's rating as the 2nd sharpest blade (Feather being #1). Matt is a shaving genius. These blades are amazing!! They are sharp and so smooth. I have only used Astra Greens before and GP's are sharper and smoother than Astra. I really noticed the difference when I went ATG (against the grain) on my cheeks and mustache. I could hardly feel the blade. Like Matt, the only variable in testing the Gillette Platinum blade was the blade itself. Well done Matt. Your rating system is spot on.
That was a great one as always! My favorites are permasharp, gillette rubie, personna platinum, voskhod, dorco platinumI, astra... it's important to always go back to blades after a while. The technique and maybe your hair have changed. 6 years ago I tried astra and hated, was constantly having the worst shaves... now I decided to check them out again... what a great surprise. Excellent shave. Cheers!
Have a mekur 23c. Which blades would provide a smooth, close shave for a beginner that wont hack the face, between gillette platnum, wilkens sword, and astra green and in which order? I have the derby extras but am afraid to try them. Anyone?
Everyone’s experience will be different bro. Build you a sample pack with those brands and try them. That’s what I do because my mileage will be different from others. Trying new things keeps it exciting lol
Matt, Great video! I would add Silver Star (Lord-Egypt), Bic Platinum Chrome (Greece) and Crystal (Personna-Israel, I think) blades to your offerings. Hands down, Silver Stars are my favorite blades. They have the best combination of sharpness and smoothness, and that is how I rate them on my spreadsheet. One column for each category. I also have a column for whether or not to buy again. When I bought sample packs (which I still need to finish), I used each blade for a minimum of 3 shaves (unless they really tore me up), to see how they performed. Coated blades tend to "sharpen up", after the first shave, for one or two more shaves, before dulling (however, I got 7 shaves out of the Silver Stars a few times). Feathers are sharpest on the first shave (but not smooth) and trail off after that (no coating). Same with Personna Med Preps. Bics are almost as sharp as Feathers, but are smoother. Of course, YMMV, because each person's skin sensitivity, coarseness and density of stubble are different. What works for one, may not work for another (just like aggressiveness of razor). Blade pairing is also very important. A Feather in an R-41 might rip your face to shreds, but a Feather in an AS-D2 might be smooth as butter. Also, some guys with a week's growth might find one pass with the R-41/Feather better than the AS-D2/Feather with 3 passes. Lastly, I like several of the blades you stock: 7 o'clock black, yellow, Russian green (like the Indian green, too), WS-German (like the Indian, too), Wizamet. Astra Blue wasn't bad, either. I need to buy some of those Treet Platinums and Black RK's. Thanks again, and it was fun to see you do this video.
I will usually use a Feather with the mild razors and can conversely use a milder blade for the more aggressive razors, of which I do not favor generally. Offhand I am sure Derby Extras are made in Turkey. They came with my very first razor, the Edwin Jagged DE89, and actually was a while before deciding to add variety of blades to my den as my knowledge and experience expanded. Gillette Nacet, Astra and Wilkinson are my basic go-to blades for most shaving. Over 10 years now in DE shaving and enjoy it more and more.
Blade are like Wine or Beer it’s the one you personally love that make you personally love.🥳 The other sell, and are made because other people love, for many personal reasons.🥰
I just started traditional wet shaving after Christmas 2021 as I got a razor and sample pack for Christmas. First shave was terrible with Astra Greens. Then found your webpage and started working my way from Derby’s up. After trying like 3 more blades and doing much better just reached into the bag and got the Rapira Platinum Lux and was nervous about the sharpness. Best shave ever and still my favorite. Improved technique definitely helps. I mean I’ve gotten nasty cuts with cartridges and Derby’s so anything will cut you if your not careful. What about the Personna made in the USA blades?
I tend to use milder razors with the sharpest blades and I agree Perma-Sharp blades are one of the sharpest out there and a favourite of mine, I think over 3 shaves when I bin the blade they are sharper than Feather blades. Bic Chrome Platinum blades are very sharp and smooth. Polsilver blades in all there versions are just brilliant. Lab Blue /Med Prep blades are above average sharpness and really smooth
Great video comparison Matt! My favorite go to blades are Personna Comfort Coated. The used to be called Personna Lab Blue. Very smooth and sharp, and also made in America! 🇺🇸 I think they are the only blades made in America today!👍🇺🇸
I've been trying out all sorts of sample packs (both from RE as well as Amazon,) and I've been surprised which ones I've found to be my favorites. Of course, Feather is one I liked, especially on shave 3/4; however, I found that Voskhod and Derby Platnium were perfect. The Voskhod one was so good on my first pass I felt like that was enough, but I did my three pass shave anyway since I had a lot of soap made.
I only bought a 50 pack of Gillette Platinum and stuck with it. I am new to Traditional double edge razor shaving since April. It works well in my Vikings Blade Chieftain Jr.
I've been using Derby Extras for the last 8 years, but I wanted to try something new and a bit more aggressive. You're video was truly great and now I'm gonna try the Astra Greens. Thanks for the accurate comparison for all those blades 🙂
I bought a couple sample packs and the ones I remember liking were big ben, lord, Wilkinson sword, Astra green, feather, Gillette platinum. I bought a ton of feather blades but now I wish I hadn't as to avoid the harshness and reduce potential nicks. Using some parker blades that came with my shavette and I feel a lot of resistance. I need to try some different blades in it since it is a different razor type. My Boker straight comes tomorrow. Looking forward to the first shave with that on Monday.
I'm six months into the wet shaving. So far the "Rapira Lux" have been working for me. I did fine some "Personna" (German) blades at the local 99 cent store. They've done pretty good for me as well...
Euromax Platinum is one of my favorites along with Personna Blue and Wilkinson Sword. The Euromax was not included in the list. It may not be readily available in the US. Nice video that confirms something.
Thank you Matt, this was a very informative and honest review. Like you say, what matters most is not necessarily the perceived sharpness rating of a particular blade but how it actually performs for each person - sample packs are definitely the best way to start one’s journey!!!
Just picked up some Rapira Lux blades based on your high rating (though I understand it’s an arbitrary rating 👍🏻). I’ve been using the Bic Platinums a lot recently and think they might have taken over my top spot. Cheers
Wizamet and Nacet are perfection for me, I also enjoy TREET and am testing Personna Lab Blue (made in USA and hoping I can use these to support USA made products)!
I use the Wilkenson Sword and love it. I remember the ads from the 70's and the fact that it can 'carry' its own used blades. I sometime use the Gillette Platinum.
Thnx again on the great quality service I recieve from Razor Emporium.👍👍Could you mention your observation of highest rated blades other than Russian made. I’m making a little transition now. Thnx the best Fred H.
Recently bought a sample pack of about 15-16 blades to try and find a new favorite, but I always shave at least a couple of times fully with each. What's it like on a first shave? Second? Third? Is the overall experience a good one, or is there always some hesitance? Haven't gotten far yet but I think, ironically, that the first I tried, Astra Green, could end up being the favorite.
I was a little disappointed not to see the Personna blue, which is my favorite and also lasts a long time.Made in USA by Accutec they also make the Personna med. prep.
Gillette Silver/Blue has always been my favorite-smooth and sharp. I'll pick up some Kai and Gillette Platinum based on your video and see how that goes. I have to say your shop made soaps make a great lather and slickness that makes a difference when shaving.
I really like the Treet Platinums, they sometimes can't be as smooth as your average Astras but i find them to be a little bit sharper and for a few euros more than what a pack of 100 Astras cost i can get 200 Treet Platinums. And also how can you tell how good a razor blade is with just a swipe or two? What good is a super sharp and a super expensive razor blade if it's only good for one shave?
Hi Matt- Great shave and razor blade ratings; thank you! I would definitely suggest adding Gillette Nacet blades to your stock. They have been my go-to blade for sometime, now. I think you would enjoy shaving with them. Have a great weekend ahead. Be safe and be well. Best regards, as always, Matt!
Nacet Blades are nearly as sharp as Feathers but smoother on my face. Bic Chrome is my next best. Astra SP's is what i started out with in wet shaving but they are not as sharp as Nacet blades or Bic's. I use the Astra SP's occasionally, but they give me face irritation, must be the coating who knows YMMV.
Thanks for the nice video I really appreciate your reviews. I was just wondering if you didn't know what you're shaving with and just tell us the number of sharpness and brands revealed toyou and us at the end of the video. Would it change the result?
I agree with most of these but i would put the astra green and the Gillette super stainless closer to the kai blade. But this is for me using a slim adjustable and a PAA ascension select
I enjoyed the video, Matt. I've found that I prefer platinum coated blades, so my favorites as of right now are Lord Platinum and Tiger Platinum. I'll have to try the Gillette Platinum based off your experience in the video. Another thing I always tell people is that sharper isn't always necessarily 'better'. I'm glad you mentioned that Feathers can sometimes leave your face feeling rough. I hate to see new Wet Shavers jump straight to Feathers because they're not always going to have the best experience.
Gillette Platinum is the first and only blades I bought. I am new to de razor shaving since April. It's a good mix of sharpness and smoothness. It's really good for sensitive skin and a mild razor. I use it in Vikings Blade Chieftain Jr.
@@misterlexx2721 I also too bought the chieftain Jr in july..I bought a sample pack N so far my #1 favorite is wilkinson sword,#2 sharp 7am, #3 lord platinum #4 astra blue and I can go on but yes definitely give more blades a try ;) 🪒🤙
@@misterlexx2721 I have sensitive skin as well! By far my worst blade would be the tweet platinum! That one tore my face up N had my face looking like I was on a 2 week binge of tweaking N picking my face 😳😬😵🤕!! I definitely put those all the way down of my sample pack I won't be using those anytime for a long time! I have yet to try the feather I am saving those for last. The ones I named gave me no cuts what so ever N were very forgiving blades👍just cuz they worked for me doesn't mean they will work for you were all different but best of wet shaving to you my friends 🪒🤙
Perma Sharp are my #1 choice. But I like the Astra Green as well. The new Schick Triple Coated blades are one you should try when able to get them. Just as great as the Perma Sharp from my experience. Also Lord blades (Egyptian made) are worth trying. I like Silver Star, Crown and Big Ben.
Derby Premium being rated lower than Derby Extra was the biggest surprise for me. Also wish you had tried some of the Dorco blades, especially the ones made in their new Vietnamese factory (like the Prime).
Matt, what preshave did you use, and what was the flat square thing you used to put it on with? Never saw those before. AWESOME VIDEO.! Just what I needed to know in my fledgling shaving journey. You da MAN
My razor blades are related to cost. Currently I am using Derby Platinum. I might look at the Wilkerson Sword again, I was new at the time and did not like them. The Treet Platinum looks like a new blade to also look at.
My favorite blade is the Rapira Platinum Lux. I've tried tons of the blades shown in this review (and more) and have found that platinum coated blades are just smoother for me. Stainless steel only blades (or non coated blades) just tug my face a little too much
Interesting comparison! I have tried a lot of these and generally agree with the order you've listed. I also have most of the rest in my stack of "to try" blades. As for other ones to try - of the ones you carry, Nacet and the Dorcos. The Primes are possibly my favourites at the moment - quite sharp yet smooth, and longer lasting than most. Of ones not sold by you (yet), BiC Chrome Platiums and Gillette London Bridge both perform well for me (the latter are a bit milder, but decently sharp and very smooth).
Gillette platinums I find to be great with stubble or even a decent amount of growth. I have a more sensitive neck and used to use feathers but my neck would always be a little gnarly after
Saw a lot of reviews talking (like most user's) that some "good and sharp blades" are (and I tried all of them) derby, Gillette blue and platinum, rapira (shaved with that 5minutes ago... Really awful experience), astra green and blue etc. And I have the permasharp next to try... for soft stubble I think most of it is for sure just fine, BUT if you have hard stubble like mine... For the time being only the Wilkinson sword classic and the muhle cut through it like butter and smooth without irritations, tugging and leaving stubble behind like the all the above mentioned blades. Have packs from KAI, feather and Gillette 7oclock super platinum which I didn't try yet.
I like the Wilkinson Sword blades myself. And yes, the ones you used with the black dispenser is Germany. I’m sure there are sharper blades out there, but they’re good enough for me and they last a while. I pair them with my 1948 Aristocrat and bam, I found my daily driver. I remember hating trying out different blades when I went into wet shaving. The worst ones I remember using were the Shark blades. Felt like I was scraping a shark tooth across my face.
Actually, they are one of the sharper blades out there. Slightly less than feather on the first go, but they actually get sharper on the second use great blades! My favorites forward very closely by feather. I feel like I only get one great shave out of feather and then they dull quickly. But, blades are cheap, so who cares?! I would even say that holds true across most, if not all of my razors, mostly vintage Gillettes. They are both so good in my Ambassador, that I am having trouble making myself try something different.
Thanks Matt for that informative video. I’ve been a wet shaver for about 7 months and have been loving it. I’ve learned so much from your channel. Bought an Amazon sample pack a while ago and it seems as though the Astra Green and Personna blades are my favorite. A good balance of smooth and sharp. I might’ve missed it in the video but what are your go to DE blades?
You missed Gillette Wilkinson Sword Saloon pack blades! They are very economical! For me they are sharp for my coarse hair and smooth! I just received a pack of 110 blades for under $7 on ebay!! Thanks for reviewing all those blades!! A couple of them at the top of your review, I would agree with whole heartedly! Thanks again!
Very informative video! Are the Gillette Platinum (Russia) the ones in the dark blue box and with the arabic lettering on the box? Is there a difference between the Gillette Platinum from Russia that are laser etched vs printed? Light blue box vs dark blue box?
Great video and such a wide variety of blades. You could probably do another one with 25 different blades because there are so many out there. Love the content and hope it’s more Id Lather be Shaving!
This is such a subjective topic, but I think Matt was pretty fair with all of these assessments. All of them are good blades quite frankly. I'd have nudged up the Derby Premiums, the 7 o' Clock Black's, and definitely the Silver Blues, but hey, that's why they say "YMMV." The only one that I raise an eyebrow at are those Derby Extras. Woof..... those ought to be at a 1.5 😆.
Feather so far is the best razor I've used! Even with a good stubble it'll cut through no drag at all! Favorite razor!
Yes they have best initial sharpness no doubt but i still prefer kai and bic
You should do this again as a blind study. You got someone else loading the razors anyway. Knowing what blades are in can only serve to bias you. :)

Agree and yes I love them.
Two blades that I've had really good luck with are Bolanzo and the Gillette Ruby.
Great Job! Very informative and entertaining.
Very helpful for a newby. Thanks for doing this.
Always fantastic feed back
I bought a couple sample packs and the ones I remember liking were big ben, lord, Wilkinson sword, Astra green, feather, Gillette platinum.
HI, Matt; thanks. Dorco is pretty good too!
Feather does feel the sharpest out of the paper. The bic cp feels sharper on the second shave than a fresh feather.
Scary accurate. Rapira Lux and Feather are best for me, too. Funny. Well done.
Thnx again on the great quality service I recieve from Razor Emporium.👍👍Could you mention your observation of highest rated blades other than Russian made. I’m making a little transition now. Thnx the best Fred H.
Kai
This was a very helpful video, Matt! Thanks much!!!
Have you ever tried a blade called Facon? . Supposed to be a Japanese made blade. It was super cheap but worked very well for me.
Knok
I was a little disappointed not to see the Personna blue, which is my favorite and also lasts a long time.Made in USA by Accutec they also make the Personna med. prep.
Part 2
Gillette Silver/Blue has always been my favorite-smooth and sharp. I'll pick up some Kai and Gillette Platinum based on your video and see how that goes. I have to say your shop made soaps make a great lather and slickness that makes a difference when shaving.
Happy to hear thx!
Your ratings were fair in my opinion. I've used a lot of the same blades you were using and I would place them in the same order for sharpness.
I absolutely love the Astra Green
I really like the Treet Platinums, they sometimes can't be as smooth as your average Astras but i find them to be a little bit sharper and for a few euros more than what a pack of 100 Astras cost i can get 200 Treet Platinums. And also how can you tell how good a razor blade is with just a swipe or two? What good is a super sharp and a super expensive razor blade if it's only good for one shave?
Personna Lab Blues/ Comfort Coated is my favorite blade
Hi Matt- Great shave and razor blade ratings; thank you! I would definitely suggest adding Gillette Nacet blades to your stock. They have been my go-to blade for sometime, now. I think you would enjoy shaving with them. Have a great weekend ahead. Be safe and be well. Best regards, as always, Matt!
We stock them - will be in a part 2 video
Thanks, Matt! Great to know this!
Yeah. Feather, Wilkinson sword, Personna and Derby extra are definitely in right order..
I like to say that Feathers are sharp, but they're sharp like a serrated Ginsu, not like a plain edged Henckel's or Wusthof.
@@Sonic_the_hedgehog65 Thanks. I am going to try Wilkinson Sword.
That was pretty cool. So that was sort of a one pass shave with buffing.
Pure science
Perma Sharp are my #1 choice. But I like the Astra Green as well. The new Schick Triple Coated blades are one you should try when able to get them. Just as great as the Perma Sharp from my experience. Also Lord blades (Egyptian made) are worth trying. I like Silver Star, Crown and Big Ben.
Wow, great piece. And I learned a new word... "Jaggedy". That's a technical term.
The Wilkinson swords are my favorite and the astras greens
Derby Premium being rated lower than Derby Extra was the biggest surprise for me. Also wish you had tried some of the Dorco blades, especially the ones made in their new Vietnamese factory (like the Prime).
besides amazon and other online places.........any physical stores in the USA where you can buy some of this DA blades?
Some very nice blades! I’m really a fan of the Feathers and Gillettes!
Matt, what preshave did you use, and what was the flat square thing you used to put it on with? Never saw those before. AWESOME VIDEO.! Just what I needed to know in my fledgling shaving journey. You da MAN
A new RE pre shave that we will have out soon!
4:30 Feather
8:00 Wilkinson
9:39 Gillete platinum
My razor blades are related to cost. Currently I am using Derby Platinum. I might look at the Wilkerson Sword again, I was new at the time and did not like them. The Treet Platinum looks like a new blade to also look at.
You need to try BIC and Shark blades. My top are Feather, Gillette Platinum, Astra Green, Tweet Platinum, and Voskhod Blades.
What was the point of the re-lather if you were going over areas with no lather that were already shaven?
at what time code did this occur? thx
My favorite is feather , with Wilkinson a close second
What to do to prevent pimples? After shaving?
If you're getting pimples this is called razor rash or ingrown hairs. You're shaving too close or with the wrong products.
Been using Personna Lab Blue that's made in US and think it good as Voshkod : IMO. But thanks for testing out those blades
Most underrated and unknown blades are the Eddison and Royal blades by Personna in my opinion.
Pol silver. Perma-sharp. Personna
If you like Astra Green - try Astra Blue.
@@Mvendrel thanks for the recommendation!
He is only doing the ones he has on his site
More blades in a part 2 video!
Pretty accurate rating. I’ve been looking for Polsilver for years. If anyone can help me, please let me know.
Very informative video! Are the Gillette Platinum (Russia) the ones in the dark blue box and with the arabic lettering on the box? Is there a difference between the Gillette Platinum from Russia that are laser etched vs printed? Light blue box vs dark blue box?
Same as far as I know
@@RazorEmporium Thanks!
I'd have nudged up the Derby Premiums, the 7 o' Clock Black's, and definitely the Silver Blues, but hey, that's why they say "YMMV."
The only one that I raise an eyebrow at are those Derby Extras. Woof..... those ought to be at a 1.5 😆.
The PAA Strangelets actual shave better after the first shave. something about the blade smooths out it seems
Doesn’t also depend on what type of razor you choose?
Nice Video. Astra all the way
