Steely Dan - Brooklyn Owes The Charmer Under Me

- The surreal soundscapes of Steely Dan.
Brooklyn owes the charmer under me
A race of angels
Bound with one another
A dish of dollars
Laid out for all to see
A tower room at Eden Rock
His golf at noon for free
Brooklyn owes the charmer
Under me
His lady's aching
To bring a body down
She daily preaches
On where she wants to be
An evening with a movie queen
A face we all have seen
Brooklyn owes the charmer
Under me
A case of aces
Done up loose for dealing
A piece of island cooling in the sea
The whole of time we gain or lose
And power enough to choose
Brooklyn owes the charmer
Under me
It is encouraging to see young people getting off on Steely Dan and appreciating the music as I have for 29 years
Still the ONLY cover of this great classic Dan song on utube that's worth a damn.
Nice performance moony, beautiful moving song by a beautiful woman.
This is one of my hidden SD classics. With that said, I have listened to Gardenia's version about a dozen times. AWESOME
i absolutely love this song, and i agree with you Wherethefunk, young people who have the ability to appreciate the genius of the Dan is a very encouraging thing.
awesome. such a great song.
wow loved it
Another wonderful cover. Brooklyn Owes is one of my favorite SD songs, and you are a charmer in this version. So talented!
What a lovely cover
Add another appreciative comment years later. Great rendition!!
Great song the Dan rocks
Beautiful and fragile. Classic song.
you have a real feel for this!
Very Carol King-ish treatment to a great Steely Dan song. Thanks for sharing.
"the whole of time we gain or lose, and power enough to choose"
Thank you for your inspirational version of a magical song:)
more and more beauitiful
Well done
beautiful voice brilliant tune
another sweet rendition from the sweet 'shack!
And remember, the Weeping Camel was healed by the sound of a sweet violin. If music be the food of love, then play on!
Fabulous my dear. Thank you.
cool to hear such an old sold done by someone so new
This song has to be high on the list of tunes that Don & Walt aren't proud of.
My favorite Steely Dan song. Your voice sounds beautiful.
i love you :)
Delightful Gardenia! Keep up your pursuit of great music. Courtney Barnett is doing the same. Thanks for your appreciation of a classic buried within a legacy debut album of 44 years ago!
this song is about a struggling actor that livedd in the apartment below fagan in brooklyn. He was a guy that was very nice and everybody liked and was drawn to but he could not make it as an actor. The things that fagan wrote about were all the things fagan felt the actor deserved instead of struggle and heartache. "Brooklyn owes the charmer under me".
⭐⭐⭐⭐style & heart
Steely-Dan-girl... you have made my day. You have charmed me, that's for sure! Thanks for even caring to play this.
I liked your take on the song. Thanks for posting.
great song to cover, very cool, and a very good job!!!
Loved it ! You have a smashing voice. A new angle on an old song. Thank you!
This was fantastic!
Very good! Was looking for the Steely Dan song when I came across this. Nice cover.
NICE!
nicely played, you have the sweetest voice ever : )
You always pick great tunes to play and you always make them your own. You're putting together a fine body of work ( and it's only the beginning!)and that makes me very happy for you. 5 STARS
So beautiful, the singing and the lady :D
Beautiful. I'm going to try it on acoustic and harmonica soon.
Another gem Moon! :) Please let us know where your touring next!
Que Coisa Linda !😍💫 emocionei
Great singing and keys, 5 stars from Frank.
i o could listen to this for ages this is sooooooo good!
can u please do razor boy for me?
Yeah i got that becker and fagen collection on vinyl in 89 when i was at school. The soundtrack to my exchange trip to Spain. Becker does quite a bit of singing on it. Funny, you dont hear him sing on any of their albums proper.
oh yeah, sweet rendition MS, a lot of feeling .
you really are asd fan. the most i can push it wiyh most girls is don's solo stuff. if i'm lucky.
across the atlantic different music culture. america's heritage. nicely sung. love the demo. my sentry trembles.
this is from another planet come on! are you new yorker?
It so sad is she blind.simple and nice.
From the first LP. Obscure lyrics, even by Becker/Fagen standards.
check out You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It LOL!
"I'm about to cry and I don't know the reason.."
Interesting SD choice -
This wasn't a single!
Their best album I think, nicely played I feel
Gorgeous! Absolutely gorgeous! This is one of my favorite SD songs and I think I like your version better than Palmers. People around our age just don't get the Dan. Marry me? Or at least pretty pretty please do Pretzel Logic?
I love how you sing, your whole delivery, the playing & singing works really good.
Do you ever sing Laura Nyro?
Yeah, this young lady's style and delivery seems influenced by Laura.
Yeah, do stuff from "More Than a New Discovery".
She even resembles the young Laura.
yeah... i see your point... Laura Nyro indeed.
Nice job. You probably know this by now, but the first line of each verse has a C where a G chord should be ("for all to see....").
Wish I could play like you do on Parker's Band!
did he go to Bard?
I LOVE YOU?
i am in Brooklyn if u want to get together and play the Dan
i think this was written after Fagan graduated from Bard. So I would guess no. THe dude was a bartenbder trying to make it in acting
But forbidden nonetheless.
8 Thumbs down. Really?
Their thumbs down get my middle fingers up!
yah, flip the deaf dummies off!, you did very well, thanks for sharing.
Really nice... ffs, clean your apartment.
haha, this was 13 years ago
You have a great voice, but you should spend a little more time learning this tune's chord changes.
