The royal mother, the actress who plays her I’m not sure. I don’t think she gets enough credit for the role that she played. This woman is outstanding! She I couldn’t imagine anyone else playing that role. As an American, I am so enthralled with this entire show, I’ve watched it probably 5 to 6 times from beginning to end and I never get tired of it. Even with the subtitles, I don’t care. The acting is so magnificent. The storyline is so heartbreaking and the music is so haunting that I’ve never had an experience like this, watching anything on television in America in my life. I so wish that this cast could come to the states for a tour there many of us who watch this.
She is Vivian Wu / Wu Junmei in Chinese. She is also an American actress and starred on films such as The Last Emperor, Joy Luck Club, Netflix 's Away. Her rival Ruyi's Aunt (Joan Chen) is also an American actress and she is also her rival at The Last Emperor too. Imagine if these two actresses deliver their line roles in Ruyi in English that's a bomb!
They live in a palace wearing silk clothes and eating delicate dishes yet always have to be on toes, falling into schemes or plotting schemes against each other. Living such stressful life. I wish they didn’t have to live for their clans. Imagine them sitting together and just enjoying a cup of tea like sisters.
Ruyi’s last conversation with Rongpei at the end of the series kind of echoes this sentiment. It’s so heartbreaking they were pushed to try and clamber over each other to win power for their clans.
Empress was cruel and evil. Hailan was right, Empress was eating her own bitter fruit. I think she did have something to do with the death of 1st prince's mother and sister. That woman spent every day scheming against others. She never even enjoyed the position she most coveted.

In the novel, it was Consort Jia who got rid of first prince's mother and sister. But it's never shown in the series, it's rather pointed that the Empress is the one who did it.
This Queen reminds me too much of my mother. Even when both my brothers were arrested, tried, convicted and sent to County Jail for 4 months, she never would accept their guilt and culpability. To the day she died and breathed her last she clung firmly to their innocence and told anyone who would listen about how "they were set up to take the fall by THE MAN!" What Man? Who Man? Where Man? Why Man? WTH are you tripping on/about?
I really don't like this Empress. Instead of being grateful for the children she still had, she literally told her daughter that her daughter was worth less than a lump of coal, only good for burning. HaiLan was right- Empress was eating her own bitter fruit. The actress did a good job here.
