In fairness to SMU, the NCAA did a massive investigation on the entire Southwest Conference, and they found that all schools had committed recruiting violations except for Baylor and Rice, the two worst teams in the conference.
How do free shoes and money for autographs provide a competitive advantage? They don't. Just because it's against NCAA rules doesn't mean it's cheating. The NCAA blows.
@E S It's simple, dude. If players were allowed to sell their autographs, it will quickly become clear which schools could provide the most lucrative autograph signing events. Schools with the biggest and most supportive alumni would have an advantage in recruiting. USC, Michigan, Texas, Alabama, etc. would land all the on the fence recruits...especially ones from poor families. Same with free shoes. Alumni would simply gift shoes and gear to every player who would then sell them. Most FBS schools would not be able to keep up with the mega universities.
@@tosht2515 Fair enough. The "mega universities" would still get the best talent as is now. A roster can only hold so many guys. Most cheating in college sports could be solved by allowing players to benefit financially from their name while amateurs and giving them unlimited meals and a stipend. Either that or the NFL and NBA can stop forcing their players to go to college when no other sport does that. That way, they dont have to put up a facade that athletes who barely attended class in high school are ready to get a college education.
