I became obsessed with these guys when I was 17. I’m 45 now but when I first got into them, these dudes had me running for a dictionary to look up meanings of words. What a journey it’s been. Still my favorite band with Radiohead in a close second. And wouldn’t you know, somehow both bands pulled off some magic trick and are still active and making music. Also the first time I saw Tool, System of a Down opened for them before anyone knew who they were. Before any of their success. Had no clue what I was witnessing. ✌️
Very cool reaction. You highlighted something that I've always thought about Maynard. He is a master of melodies. It has to be hard putting vocals to the rest of the bands insane time signatures. I'm going to check out your other tool reactions
I think the song is about the duality of man. The idea that there are 2 sides to every person, good and evil. The Deceiver being the evil side of yourself. The poison is all the crap around us that influences our choices. By the end of the song, he's gotten rid of his fear of self and chased the Deceiver away.
I love the FI ALBUM so much. It's just as much a masterpiece as their other albums with Pneuma, Invincible and Descending being S tier. Also, I don't like Dream Theater, not even a little.
Pretty sure Tool and SoaD played together at the 97 or 98 Lollapalooza i was at. Best live band I've seen, only Floyd came close. I was at senior in high school when Undertow was released, I wish I had a video of my reaction watching the Headbangers Ball episode with the Sober debut.
Just a suggestion about this format...This is a reaction channel, we wanna see your 'reaction'! The shot of you should dominate the screen in my opinion. I have a hard enough time seeing these days, squinting to see what your face says ain't helping!! LOL ..Love your insight and energy man, this channel needs a lot more Tool!
There's no "correct" way to interpret Tool lyrics. They are whatever they are, for you. If you listen long enough, some songs will take on entirely new meanings for you as you get older. Maynard is a fantasic poet 🤘
Your tool reactions are probably my favorite. There's just so much to unpack. I will also donate a kidney if you check this out. ua-cam.com/video/gu-_kyU4dWk/v-deo.html I can't think of a more complex and completely insane metal band
As a conspiracy theorist, and given the time this album came out, it has always lead me to thoughts of the Covid 19 plandemic and one world government trying to take us over, but my mind is immune. I'm sure it will mean something different to me in a few years.
This album came out in 2019. Considering the time frame of mixing and mastering before the album release, Maynard wrote these lyrics in 2018 or earlier. While I understand the ease of relating it to the times we were in, it just doesn't line up with the timing. Maynard is the only one who truly knows what the actual meaning is, so any meaning you or I take is what it is. But if I were a betting man, I think its really just about the band members fear of coming back after 13 years and trying to make more music living up to the hype. Ignore all the negative doubt from yourself and others around you, trust your instincts and push through to make the art you want to make. Once you identify the source of the fear and face it, you are immune to fear.
It would have been totally prophetic to be about the covid experience. But yes Maynard has made his opinion known several times over the years of his opinion of Mr Trump. He is definitely the deceiver. The video for Puscifer the arsonist is a great example.
Danny Carey indeed plays the tabla
For someone who claims they can't interpret Tool lyrics well, you do a great job
Hahah why thank you. I feel like they are so open to interpretation so I never know if I’m on target
The “swelling chellos” at the beginning is Adam and Justin.. Bass and guitar!

Same brother! What other art will have you research a dead comedian, Carl Jung, two different languages and math sequence rabbit hole.
My greatest wish is to be able to hear Tool for the first time again.
This whole album hits hard. "Descending" is epic.
IMO, it's their best song.
Epic????? You call that epic???
It’s a gift from god….. lol
This album is immaculate live too. Seen this tour 7 times.
@@50NewEyes all their music is epic ❤
Def my fav on this one. Can’t wait for the new album!
You should totally go see them in concert - a most amazing experience, like no other.
It’s on my wish list haha
Can confirm. Saw them in Milwaukee, Halloween Night 2019. Phenomenal performance.
Greatest band ever!

exactly! complex time signatures + changes must make the vocal melody writing so much harder, but they do it anyways

Do-more tool. It's the only reason why i use UA-cam
hahah, more tool will come!
Loved your reaction! Long live TOOL!🌀
... and the fact that this was released mere months prior to the lockdowns, some called it prophetic.
It destroyed Taylor S. in the charts

He says mitosis exactly 1/2 way through the song.
wow good catch
@@Sohum no hate but it's well known amongst Tool fans
@RosettaStoned462 you are why tool fans get a bad rep
@@chriskoszyk4255 Because I'm clarifying that person isn't the one who discovered it? I can see your prospective though.
Fun fact: 10:14 when a cell divides into two identical pieces, it's called "mitosis".. so that word just divides this song right from the middle
I believe if you asked Maynard what his lyrics mean, he would say, "Whatever you think they mean, that is exactly what they mean.".
Sounds like Friedrich Nietzsche🤣
Amazing song 🎉
its incredible
If you haven't listened to it, you should listen to Hi Ren, by Ren. It's lyrically amazing as well.
Oh I definitely have, I did an analysis of it on my channel a while ago. It’s a masterpiece
Tool an SOAD would be epic!
This has been their show opener
What do they close with?
It freaks me out a little that this was released 7 months before the pandemic hit. This song seems quite prescient in an "allagorical" way.
Really enjoy your reactions to Tool. Do you have a backlog of song recommendations?
I do have a big backlog, but I adjust my reaction list based on donations and the popularity of request

Thanks for the feedback. I was trying out a different style, but this is helpful

Subbed for more Tool please
thanks for your sub!

Trump was president for 2 years once this came out. It's who I think of when I hear this. It came out a bit too early for it to be about covid.
