Bhai I've been driving automatics for several years now, the issue you are facing is very common for automatic transmission, most automatics get confused in hills and ghats sections, so try switching gearbox to manual mode and then use paddle shifters for gear shifting, it'll definitely be much better, you can also use sports mode along with manual transmission mode to reduce initial lag you are facing.
Instead take a manual car, It will be much much better than any kind of mode and switches and all that stuffs of automatic transmission. (Conditions Apply - Manual is not for everyone as nowadays we at RTO are seeing - 60 to 70% vehicles are automatic and they don't know how to drive manual car and most of automatic car fails at the hill hold stretch as hill hold or any kind of assistive features is not allowed during test)

Automatic cars is not meant for steep hilly roads trust me .
Darjeeling has very narrow roads and is an extremely crowded city.....without being locals of Darjeeling you can't drive on that safely without any trouble...We from other parts of West Bengal don't risk to take our 4 wheelers to Darjeeling or we take a local driver from Siliguri to accompany us. We take our cars to other offbeat tourist areas like lava lolegaon rishap, kalimpong, etc., where not much taxi mayhem is there.

I drove to Darjeeling one week back from odisha, I exactly faced same issue from those rogue sumo drivers, they use filthy language and one of them harshly applied the break right in front of me after overtaking, expecting me to hit from back, but my vehicle was slow , I was able to control it. They drive very recklessly on those narrow lanes , always honking unnecessarily. I just didn't have a good impression at all.

I know exactly why they do in Darjeeling, because if we take our private car they lose money, up and down in reserve cars cost between 8000-10000 from Siliguri. But that doesn't mean, cab drivers should harass other state vehicles. These cab drivers always think the rest are noob drivers with zero skill, but we also belong to areas with ghat road, with longest is the Salur and Sunki ghat of koraput spanning around 50-60km with heavy traffic rush and very accident prone roads. I sometimes think these sumo drivers should drive in this terrain, I bet they will drive beyond 20 kmph with 16-24 wheel heavy duty trucks and that too in a single lane.

I own 2 automatic cars, 1 cvt and 1 ecvt hybrid, the lag in cvt is not ignorable in mountains but in hybrid ecvt, there is no lag at all. But TBH, for those who are not regular mountain drivers, automatic is best specially cvt, the driving pleasure is amazing

The toy trains and other artificial attractions...the well maintained gardens and forests are all due to constant efforts of the CM which were not so good, established and attractive before the last 10-12 years.
Bhai i am from Kolkata my vehicle rto code he WB06 lagta he, i also went to Darjeeling by road they completly treat you differently when they see the vehicle is not a local number Darjeeling ma wb74 he they literally dont give spaces to park in public spots all are filled taxis and local residents same state ke he phir bhi differently treat karte he we had a fight with bolero guy since he side swiped our car
