I Always feel like it was more of a coming-of-age theme for James because although he's a kid he has to face the fact that sometimes a girl doesn't show up doesn't matter why she just won't and you gotta move on
This is my favorite scene in all of anime. The music, choreography, sound, backstory, it all rolls up into a beautiful melancholy. Can stand on it's own, but the contrast in watching with and without the story context is what makes it so good

This was such a turning point in the series. Up until this point, The Torarato represented everything the Outlaw Star dreamed of becoming as a battleship. They finally realized that the whole of their group was better than the sum of their parts. As a kid, I was so wrought with emotion watching this. Proud of them for finally becoming a cohesive team despite knowing that they could only achieve this by literally destroying Jim's love interest. I'm 34 years old now, and this scene still makes me a bit emotional.
Poor Jim If she had knew that Jim was Gene's technical support, she would have killed him on the spot. Don't overlook the fact this little girl was a Tao master. Meaning she's probably killed a lot of innocent people.
Not really Leilong already showed he relied on skill with weapons instead of magic. The Anten 7 aren't all Tao Masters but masters of differnt trades. Leilong is a jack of all trades, Iraga is a master of hand to hand combat while Hanmyo is a master of space combat.

Still very sad as her interactions with Jim seemed to definitely soften her. The pirates are evil, but still human in some cases.

Probably for the better. If he knew, it would mess him up and questioning himself if he murdered an innocent girl. But that is a Kei Pirate with the intent to kill anyone that stands in her way and their mission. Her body count on taking innocent lives are far greater than Jim's.

It's sad because I think they barely knew that it was a member of the seven they were dealing with, and Jim never finds out the reality of the situation. Still, this was probably one of the most impressive victories over a member of the seven next to the mercenary "leader" that Gene faced. They faced a numbers game head on and won.
That's the sad thing about life. Sometimes, you'll never know the full story behind someone who popped into your life and then promptly vanished. And in a fight to the death, you dont always get the chance to learn about who you're about to kill.

It's also where we learn that Jim is attracted to personality instead of gender. probably the most accurate fururistic cultural character to the genre's enviroment/setting. Hanmyo is another example of character build solidarity- She's a grappler warrior pilot, and dies like a true warrior without hesitation or regret, right til the end...

The only thing that gets me, and this is a nitpick: When Jim describes the combat system settings to the rest of the crew; the grappler arm response percentage increase, cutting external monitors and the single pilot control scheme, Gilliam says, "This system can only remain operational for ONE MINUTE" which REALLY drives the make-or-break tension of the scene to white knuckled heights. However... the fight lasts for 77 seconds, 17 seconds longer than Gilliam said the system could remain active in said configuration. Why?
Interesting, I never noticed that. I suppose he might have just given an approximation? (Which doesn't sound very likely for an AI but I can't think of much else.)
Maybe Gilliam meant 60 second/1 minute TOTAL, as there were several instances of a "pause" in the grappler combat where evasive maneuvers, missiles and beam weapons were used, giving the arms/system a kinda "cool-down".
I believe it's explained in the show, when grappler arm technology was developed, pirates adapted it into their tactics, and in turn other parties did the same to counter it.
This was always the most heartbreaking moment of the entire series.

In my opinion, Nina’s death was worse than Hanmyo’s. Why? Because she was much younger than Hanmyo, and she was completely innocent.

As far as cyberpunk classes go, Jim is a tech, Aisha is a melee solo, so is Suzuka, and Gene is a ranged solo, and Melfina is a netrunner!
I figured Gene as a Nomad with his piloting skills, tech repair, and pistol skills. But, you still have a fair point

One of the best episodes from this show. It was sad how Jim ended up killing his girlfriend without knowing it was her he killed.
And he was quite brutal in the attack as will.

in the later scenes the outlaw star uses a lot of missiles so its not in grappler combt mode then
