Thank you so much for a very clear instruction. Now I can learn other chords and learn to strum...
Thanks Justin, I finally bought a ukulele today and your video was so tremendously helpful. Really appreciate the time and effort you put in to making this tutorial and I can't wait to watch the next lesson. Cheers!
I did the same exact thing, lol. I used to play the clarinet back in middle school (don't care much for non-rock instruments now) but there's something intimidating about the harmonica. I want to learn how to play it so bad though.
GREAT VIDEO! THANK YOU! Picked up my old Flying V ukulele that I got in exchange for a bag of doughnuts at Download about 10 years ago and has been sitting in my little girls bedroom for decoration. Given me a strum rhythm to practice to make it less boring, taught 4 chords and an easy sequence to put them into to make a song I recognise. And teaches you how to tune. 3 hours later and I already feel like I can play a song I sort of recognise. I can’t wait to show my little girl in the morning. She probably won’t be at all impressed by my new talent. Really handy video though.
Hailey-loves-phan you have to really press down on the string on the fret board thingy. It hurts at first but that's how you get the desired sound of the chord :)
Thank you for sharing. I'll be 50 this coming June and I think learning new things doesn't require age. I hope I can play simple songs for my KG3 pupils.
This is really helpful! I'll be returning to this video when I get my first ever ukulele in a week - I'm sure it'll be ideal for my nonexistent skill level. Thank you so much, Justin!
cool, I went to Hawaii once and got a ukulele at Walmart and never played it and then my father sat on it XD. so I got a new one from an actual music store that I never touched until now

Thanks so much for this great video. I am a music teacher in schools and have been asked to give a ukulele class tomorrow! In all my years of playing guitar (over 30), I am ashamed to say I've never even picked one up, so your video has been mega helpful as a starting point. Many thanks!
Another thing I should have said, it really helps being able to play guitar as well. I found the transition really easy as a result. The key is to have patience and perseverance. It will come.

I just got a new ukelele for christmas and I have never played a string instrument at all before. My mom's boyfriend got me some kind of electric tuner to go with it, and I'm pretty sure I have the basic idea down: You select a chord/note you're trying to match, then keep tuning it until the thing on the screen meets in the middle, and you do this for all of the strings. But, whenever I tune it or just move the knobs at all, nothing happens on the screen. I'm sorry if I sound dumb, but again, I've never played ukelele or any kind of string instrument so I'm trying to learn how to tune it from the instructions. Can anyone help me on this?
Without knowing the exact type of tuner it's hard to give advice. I haven't got a uke yet, but I have been doing a lot of research and saving before I purchase my first uke. There appear to generally be two types of tuner, those with a microphone built in and those that clip on to the uke and tune by vibration. The second seem better for the beginner, plus you can tune up in a noisy area. The only thing I could suggest with your tuner is to read the instructions or check the specific model on the Internet :)

Thanks for the video. I'm a lefthanded guy that has never played an instrument. I have long thin fingers. I am having problems getting my fingers on the strings without hitting the other strings. Any suggestions? Thanks Harold.

I bought a ukulele years ago and started to learn but for some reason I stopped. Now during this lockdown I have decided to learn again and I'm enjoying it already :)
Hi Justin Just bought a cute little Uke today at a Cashies store. Mint condition and very cute. Found your great video and have it all tuned up nicely. Sounds great and now learnt my first 4 chords😊👏👏👏👍💕Yah. Heaps of fun. I play guitar also so was puzzled at first by the tuning of the uke, but followed your instructions and all worked out well. You are awesome. Thank you 🙏
Hey Justin, Thanks for these tutorials. I just started to travel longer on the road. I wanna use my ukulele that I got yesterday to basking. I am stoked by the way you explain staffs. Cheers!
Yes and no. You wouldn't be able to tune the instrument Justin is using to the same notes as a guitar, but there are other options. Of the two larger size ukuleles he alluded to, one of them (called a baritone ukulele) is tuned like the highest four strings on a guitar (DGBE, low to high). Baritone's have a really rich sound that I like, but if you wanted that same tuning with a slightly more "classic ukulele" sound you could have the D string an octave up (dGBE). You'll need a special string set for that, but the folks at your local music store can help you put that together. I hope this helps you!
actually it is tuned the same as a guitar... with a capo at the 5th fret it's the thinnest 4 strings!! all the usual shapes and scales work, just have to pretend the thickest two strings are gone!!
***** ooh, so do you mean that we can play the same things in each of the two in that way? like a guitar with 5th fret capo and a std tuned uke playing? Are there alternatives like the guitar open and the uke playing at the same time?
This was wonderful! I've never played the ukelele or guitar or anything. I just tuned our ukelele and gently played the four chords in this video over and over again. Our little kids loved it and my wife said it sounded like her native Hawaii.
yoyooyasmin YAS TO EVERYTHING YOU JUST SAID I’m absolutely smitten i’ll never let you go my smol uke She asked me son when I grow old will you buy me a uke of gold And often I am upset that I cannot play very well but might as well get used to it Ooooh Ooooooh I’ll cut my pineapple :)
I'm left handed and I got a normal ukulele for Christmas a few days ago. I'm learning on it just fine. I've never played any other string instrument before though and I'm sure if I learned lefty guitar I would have a really hard time learning normal uke.
I would really suggest learning either guitar or ukulele the traditional way, I'm a lefty too and I'm getting a ukulele soon as well. I've played guitar for quite a while, and I learned it as a right handed. Changing the side of the strings would be a complete mess and a problem when playing a borrowed instrument. So maybe you should try learning as a righty, plus I believe the left hand learns easier the chords when you're a lefty. The only actual problem I can figure is just struggling with the strumming right hand (which in the case of a left handed person is not as talented) but with enough practice it won't be a problem! hope this comment might be helpful for all the cool lefties our there!!!
***** oh man, i was sweating bullets there...i am new to the ukulele and i was getting frustrated tuning it...i had changed the new strings...gads, i wished i read your post before doing all that...thanks for the tip...i will try it the traditional way...
Thank' so much this is great I'm over 70 and I can play a few songs. Its a nice to be able to play in just a few lessons and a little practice. Thanks so much.
Nice. Helped me a lot. The only question that arises is, am I using the tip of my first finger to play, or am I gliding the the nail of my first finger over the strings? Thank you

*HOW TO TUNE:
-Recommend a clip on tuner so you can tune it rly quick
-There are built in tuners on some ukuleles
-sopranos have same tuning but sometimes they tune the smaller ones up a tone from this
-the tuning is:
4th string = G (high sound) [the string closest to the ceiling]
3rd string = C (lower sound)
2nd string = E (medium sound)
1st string = A (highest sound) [the string closest to the floor]
-goes from ceiling to floor
*HOW TO HOLD IT:
-hold the uke w your forearm and press the uke against your body and hold the neck with your other hand for a little support
^^Balance the weight of it between the forearm (arm w the hand strumming) and the hand on the neck
-OR you could rest the body of the uke on your lap and hold the neck w your other hand
*HOW TO STRUM IT:
-Usually strum with your 1st finger (there are techniques tho,, like finger styles and stuff but 1st finger is best for beginners)
-usually you strum around where the neck meets the body
-practice: do 4 down strokes w 1st finger then 4 up strokes to get used to it (make sure finger isn't getting caught on the strings)
-practice 2: 1 down stoke, then 1 up stoke repeatedly
-practice 3: (this is a common pattern) down, down, up, down, up, down
-smth you should study is different kinds of strumming patterns and different ways of playing it
-don't stress

This was immensely helpful. I've watched it through about eight times already, making improvements each time. Thank you Justin
Thanks!
Thank you!
@@justinguitar thank you😉👍🙏
Please keep on doing these videos, I dont have a guitar anymore, just a uku, and I would love to learn with the best mentor!
The best Tutorial i've ever seen !
i think i have had my ukulele for about four years or five and just now i feel like learning how to strum an ukulele CORRECTLY 😃 thank you for the clear explanation!
Had a ukelele for over 3 years never played it as I didnt know how till I UA-camd how to play the ukelele and your video came up and I watched it and immediately learnt to play the chords you used here... with the chords I can play quite a lot of songs that I like...
Cheers!
thanks mate. Impulse bought a uke even though I've never played a stringed instrument.. Can't wait to learn
great! picked it up real fast
+Rad Berries i did the same and i have a really hard time strumming =/
+Rad Berries you say you picked it up real fast. How fast? Did it sound off when you strummed it for the first couple days?
I bought a harmonica (key of g) and haven't learnt how to use it. A lesson on that to get me started would be awesome!
I should be studying for my math test? WHAT AM I DOING HERE!?!? I mean I have a ukulele, but seriously what the heck am I doing here?
I believe that is called stalling. lol
+Hawaii Girls..... yeah...
+Sarah Ong dude same!
+Sarah Ong SAME i dont quite have a ukulele yet cause i just ordered it but I have a maths test tomorrow and GUESS WHO HASN'T REVISED
Ssssaaaaaammmmmmeeeee
thank you for going slow and explaining well.. A lot of others move so fast and there are no close ups of where your fingers go!
WHen I try to play chords I keep like muting the string I have my fingers on how do I stop that
Hailey-loves-phan you have to really press down on the string on the fret board thingy. It hurts at first but that's how you get the desired sound of the chord :)
Hajra Bibi Essa thank you
Hailey-loves-phan you have to lift you finger and only hold the chord on the fret. it doesn't necicarily hurt but yeah
Hailey-loves-phan pham
Thank you for sharing. I'll be 50 this coming June and I think learning new things doesn't require age. I hope I can play simple songs for my KG3 pupils.
This is really helpful! I'll be returning to this video when I get my first ever ukulele in a week - I'm sure it'll be ideal for my nonexistent skill level. Thank you so much, Justin!
DID YOU GET YOUR UKULELE
cool, I went to Hawaii once and got a ukulele at Walmart and never played it and then my father sat on it XD. so I got a new one from an actual music store that I never touched until now
Ellie Lou I can't understand this
Ellie Lou yup, same with me
Update after 6 years?
Is anyone else suffering because they can't play g chord for the life of them
I'm A Gøner me
I'm A Gøner just bar out the 3 bottom strings with ur 1st finger and 2nd fing on the 2nd string 3rd fret. Complicated stuff but its so much easier than playing with 3 fingers
I just got it... keep practicing.. your get it 👍🏻
Yup I am struggling so much with the g chord oml
Grace Haynie - Haha, very true. So much much so that I almost went full out Pete Townsend last night while trying to 'master' 3 Little Birds. 😤😋
You’re a fantastic teacher !! It’s like you answered the questions I had in my head before I even asked it🙌🏾 Subscribed
Which strumming pattern are you using?? It's so good
Eddie Vedder inspired me to want to play ukulele. Im 54 and play a bit of guitar most my life but eddies style and great song writing just makes me want to express myself threw this fun and exciting instrument. Thank you Justin for such clear and easy direction.
going to find eddie veder uke music.. for inspiration too
Ayo what he just say
Any suggestion on a good ukulele to purchase?
yeah, a Maton!! :)
dont forget to be realistic - you'll have to put in a bit of work whichever method you decide on for learning to play the uke I've been researching into different systems and discovered an awesome website at Arthurs Uke Blog (check it out on google)
+homelesswhale After wanting for years to learn the Ukelele I discovered Arthurs Uke Blog and this appears to be the best home study method (google it if you're interested)
+homelesswhale Soprano
you can get a mahalo one it's cheap and really good if you're a beginner
Thanks so much for this great video. I am a music teacher in schools and have been asked to give a ukulele class tomorrow! In all my years of playing guitar (over 30), I am ashamed to say I've never even picked one up, so your video has been mega helpful as a starting point. Many thanks!
Another thing I should have said, it really helps being able to play guitar as well. I found the transition really easy as a result. The key is to have patience and perseverance. It will come.
btw, that first chord song set sounds exactly like intro to "somewhere over the rainbow" by izzy.
Just ordered one online! I'll be back once I receive it! Cannot wait :D
Did you ever played ukelele ?
WolverinesNation92 I also just ordered mine. So exited!

Your uppermost string should be tuned to G, then C, then E, then A at the bottom.

Thank you! Playing the Uke for the first time today and have never played any musical instruments. I was able to catch right on with this video! Very helpful!!!
Thanks for the video. I'm a lefthanded guy that has never played an instrument. I have long thin fingers. I am having problems getting my fingers on the strings without hitting the other strings. Any suggestions? Thanks Harold.
practice more. and more. .
This is a common beginner issue and will improve with practice and time. Can I recommend you visit the community - there's many good folk in your position and you can share tips and help there: community.justinguitar.com/

Google a super snark. You clip it to the top of your instrument and it helps you tune it.
Hi Justin
Just bought a cute little Uke today at a Cashies store.
Thank you 🙏
Awesome! Thank you!
Just started today and can play first four strings pretty well after watching your video. Top notch! Thanks
Tuning is very important. Develops the ear fingers will follow
Amazing video. Didn't take me long to figure out that chord sequence was also used for I'm Yours by Jason Mraz
I just wanna learn from this dude cause he seems great.
Hey Justin,
Thanks for these tutorials. I just started to travel longer on the road. I wanna use my ukulele that I got yesterday to basking. I am stoked by the way you explain staffs. Cheers!
Just got my first ukulele for Mother's Day!!!! Great video!!
Wow, youre a really good teacher!❤️
is there any way to just cheat and tune it like a guitar, especially for going to a party and jumping into whatever everyone else is playing?
***** perfect!
***** ooh, so do you mean that we can play the same things in each of the two in that way? like a guitar with 5th fret capo and a std tuned uke playing? Are there alternatives like the guitar open and the uke playing at the same time?
+frankbraker If you have a baritone uke, then the chords are the same as a guitar. It's has the last 4 strings D,G, B, E on a guitar.
At the end how do you strumming? Down Down Up?
This was wonderful! I've never played the ukelele or guitar or anything. I just tuned our ukelele and gently played the four chords in this video over and over again. Our little kids loved it and my wife said it sounded like her native Hawaii.
You are an amazing teacher! Love your personality as well!

great tutorial thanks!
You're awesome. I have no experience with guitars. I play violin and some piano, but I think this will be fun. Thanks for a great little video.
I can't wait to have my first ukelele! I'm a lefty, is that a problem if I got the normail ukulele? :)
I'm left handed and I got a normal ukulele for Christmas a few days ago. I'm learning on it just fine. I've never played any other string instrument before though and I'm sure if I learned lefty guitar I would have a really hard time learning normal uke.
Rachael Allen Thanks for the answer, I just got my ukulele. Glad that you said you're learned it just fine. Makes me more excited to learn :))
The only actual problem I can figure is just struggling with the strumming right hand (which in the case of a left handed person is not as talented) but with enough practice it won't be a problem! hope this comment might be helpful for all the cool lefties our there!!!

oh man, i was sweating bullets there...i am new to the ukulele and i was getting frustrated tuning it...i had changed the new strings...gads, i wished i read your post before doing all that...thanks for the tip...i will try it the traditional way...
Thank you
lllt in in
My ukulele is coming in next Tuesday. It’s Friday where I live. 🌺
Great video, man! I LITERALLY just started playing the ukulele and your videos are very helpful! Thank you :-)
