At this time, Akira Jimbo had been a member of Cassiopeia for less than a year and had drummed for less than five years. He is nothing short of a genius.
One thing I really like about this era is I feel Tetsuo Sakurai really showed amazing growth as a bassist from the first two albums to this point. I think the licks he plays here are very tasteful, and he's not overwhelmingly notey or formulaic. This is, in my opinion, the beginning of him becoming the virtuoso he became, and I think Akira Jimbo's drumming was a major part of that (with absolutely no disrespect intended to Takashi Sasaki, who's incredible to listen to!). This is tied for my favorite version of this song with the original on the 1979 album (the Brecker brothers were phenomenal on that album!) Thanks for uploading, this is amazing.
My favorite Casiopea song. That 79' debut album of theirs is constant in my playlist. Akira Jimbo's drumming really gives that fairly strong vibe in contrast to the studio version which had Takashi Sasaki on drums.
This is one of the things about music. People change and grow older, and the sound of their music changes with them. I enjoyed every era of Casiopea, but this is a monumental peak. Not just for them but for all of fusion music. Let’s just be thankful these recordings exist so that we can relive their peak, perpetually.
These musicians didn’t just master their instrument, they knew how to arrange and write a song. Young people today are more easily satisfied and want to sound cool, but don’t know the specifics. There are amazing lead and rhythm guitarists, but how many know how to write an amazing song?
there's a good handful of videos of casiopea performing in 1979! my favourite would have to be their performance of 'time limit' at the roppongi inn, check it out :)
Pretty much once or twice a week I come back to this, so raw and powerful. Their sound here is so untamed, if I had to pick a favourite era for Casiopea, I'd pick from their debut to Thunder Live, it's just such a classic Funk Fusion sound that I adore too well. God would I love to cover this with a band or play it live :D
@@fatheroftwo852 true but when you compare this live rendition of ‘Black Joke’ (not the Thunder Live one) and Time Limit live (with sasaki on drums) it gets difficult to choose the better drummer.
The final chord!!!!!! Listening to the Eyes of the Mind version it always bugs me off that they didn't play the final chord, but here it shines in all of its glory and then some :D

Holy… I never knew that, goes to show the hard work these guys put in
Hardly a year, at this point (Feb 1980) he was the probably just past his first month or into his second
HUHH only 5 years?? Did he play an instrument before that or is he just that genius
@Cucumber Cat Yea he started drumming there at age 18
Akira played the drum just for several months at age of 14 or 15 and quit.
He started playing again at the age of 18 inspired by Steve Gadd.
This is the best stroke ive ever had
noro issei's hair during early casiopea is so wild lol i love it
it’s lowkey hot tho
like if you look at him in the mint jams live recording he’s honestly looking fire
As a guy I could say it is hot.
tetsuo sakurai was a beast in the solo, he is unstoppable, incredible musicianship and skills, he is in another level
I like this earlier Casiopea style , 'Thunder live' performances. this is raw material of their 20's age. full of passion.
Totally, Minoru's playing in these early years is just so good
Full power of youngsters.
The moment when the bass solo ends and blends flawlessly into the main theme 👌🔥

Pretty sure it was Takashi Sasaki back then

Even at the early days they had such a huge, big, sound. Legendary

The beginning of Casiopea's greatest lineup. To claim that any one member stands out would be doing him a disservice.
how does this not have over a mill views

Wow this is the earliest live video I had encountered with this band. They are so young and more jazzy... LOVE them at any era!

Jazz rock , softly & cool , nice to hear it so again !!!
The bassist sounds like Billy Sheehan and Stuart Hamm and Bernard Edwards got mixed together in some strange experiment. Awesome!

Really, the first year Akira Jimbo entered the band, that year he proof himself superior in drums
Fuck yeah man!
He is much better then the other dude they had with not rhythm and tempo
@Hampus Blix No its Akira Jimbo. His kit sounds much different than Sasaki's and his rendition of Black Joke is a bit rougher overall.
I wouldn't call it superior in terms of skill, but more fitting to Casiopea's digestible sound

The intro to this song goes so hard!
Especially the outro. With this band, the outros are mostly a no holding back version of the intro which I find enjoyable.
The whole damn song goes hard

It's on the original studio version from their self-titled debut album back in 1979.
