  • We explore the intriguing battle between Dolby Vision and HDR10+ and shed light on Samsung's decision not to support Dolby Vision, opting for their own HDR10+ format instead.
    Both Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are competing HDR formats designed to enhance visual quality on compatible screens. We discuss the advantages of Dolby Vision's widespread support from content creators and streaming services, while HDR10+ has been primarily exclusive to Samsung TVs, with limited support from select streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video.

    I'm looking for an OLED TV and fancied a Samsung purely because of their QD-OLED and all the reviews saying how good it was & I can get one at a very good price. I only noticed the lack of Dolby Vision when comparing the specs with other TVs. I didn't know anything about the different video formats and that HDR10+ was a Samsung thing or about the 'war' with Dolby Vision. I don't know it it's made my OLED TV selection easier or harder!
    Thanks for the heads-up, Buz!

    If I want to play content from Netflix or Disney that only has the Dolby version, will I see it in SDR?

      In my experience with my Samsung set I am given an HDR10 (non plus) version when playing from either platform that has Dolby Vision titles

      @OhBove Interesting video.
      I'm looking for a new TV, preferably a Samsung as I have the Samsung q600c 3.1.2 soundbar which I have paired up rear surround speakers 🔊 to, for a 5.1.2 audio.
      However, some of the content I have is in Dolby Vision which appears in Green and Purple as my current TV doesn't support Dolby Vision, just 4k uhd hdr, so if I played the same content on a Samsung TV, I would have the same issue wouldn't I, as Samsung TVs aren't in Dolby Vision?

      You will probably have the same issue. Dolby Vision should have an HDR10 fallback layer, not all content does, most streaming apps do.
      Also even if it does fall back HDR10 is not as good as Dolby Vision, HDR10+ is as good but that's mostly just Amazon content (there is a few other bits out there)
      If you really want a Samsung TV you have to write off Dolby vision support, if you really want Dolby Vision you have to write off a Samsung TV.
      Maybe in about 10 years or so Samsung will relent, but it doesn't look like that will happen anytime soon.

      @BuzStringer I'm just wondering if it's worth putting aside the Dolby Vision and going for the Samsung TV (for the Q Symphony sync with my Soundbar) or not bother about the sound sync and go for a LG with Dolby Vision.
      What would you suggest or go for if you was in my position?

    • @BuzStringer
      @BuzStringer  2 місяці тому +2

      It's a very personal decision, but I always treat the sound system and the display separately. I think Dolby Vision is only going to grow and content is going to keep looking better as studios get more familiar with mastering for it.
      I would choose Dolby Vision over Q Symphony, BUT what I would do if I was you, I Would turn off Q Symphony for a week or so, if you really notice the difference and can't live without it, there's your answer :)
      Also as a shameless plug, if you are getting a new TV on Amazon, using my affiliate link really does help out ;)

      @@BuzStringer Thanks for your advice. As for trying the Q Symphony for a week. I don't have a Samsung TV already to try that. I have recently bought the Samsung q600c 3.1.2 soundbar and the rear speakers along with it, which is why I wasn't sure whether to get the Samsung TV for the Q Symphony knowing I'll lose out on the DV or just get another Brand with DV and use the soundbar in 5.1.2 without Q Symphony like anyone else without a Samsung TV.
      I'm actually leaving now as we speak to go and get a TV.

    You said we’re SOL are you saying that if I want to watch a movie that’s on Disney that is in Dolby vision that it’ll just not let me watch it?

      Most of the streaming apps should fallback to HDR10 or SDR. Most of the time it will just be SDR

    I kind of Regret buying my S95B, It's a great TV. No doubt about it. Thin, and Very Vibrant. I do love a lot of things about it. But it's lack of Dolby Vision while not the biggest downside personally for me though it is a bit of a pain, my main issue is the Audio. The Speakers on the S95B Absolutely Suck. Like Seriously. It is Flat. No Punch at all. I had to go out of my way to buy my first surround sound system in order to resolve that. the Samsung Q800B. Now that has been brilliant, and can sync with the TV Speakers so their still used but now act more effectively as a whole.
    But... The fact I had to do that at all was ridiculous.
    Compared to my Old TV the Sony XE930 it didn't have all the bells and whistles, hell Dolby Vision came later on as a Software Update however, it had Very Respectable Audio, like it was quite clear and had some punch in bass too so I didn't need to buy a Surround System. That and it was one of the last TV's to have Component and Composite Support, So I could plug in my Modern Hardware as well as my Older Stuff like my PS2 and Original Xbox.
    I've now given that XE93 to my Mother as she required a much needed Upgrade,
    But still if I could go back to the day I was Buying a New TV. I think I should've gone with the Sony A95K instead of the Samsung S95B.

    Will players like DP-UB820-K allow Dolby Vision content to be played on a Samsung TV (QN85C) or am I misunderstanding the application of having a player support both?

      Both player and TV need to support.
