Hope yall enjoyed these daily dose of Muppet reviews! We'll be finishing off this series next weekend and getting back to more game reviews. Stay tuned for more junkieeeeee!
Now, wait a minute... I don't remember ever dissecting a live frog in science class... they were all long dead and preserved in formaldehyde by the time they got to the school, so, unless that's a 1950's thing, what the hell, Disney?
This was long before Disney bought the Muppets. I believe it was around the time the Henson Company was owned by a German company & their movies were produced & distributed by Sony.
We were supposed to dissect a frog in school. My class really wanted to dissect frogs but the class was so poorly behaved that we never dissected a frog. One of the only times I was happy with my class being poorly behaved.
This was the first Muppets film I ever watched (I was a baby, so I didn't have a good sense of what the rest of the franchise was like). It has a special place in my heart because of that and I watched it all the damn time.
On paper, the idea of a origin story for Kermit's childhood years in the swamp actually sounds kinda fun after seeing the opening of The Muppet Movie, but the execution is just a mess. I blame it on the script and Sony not giving a shit about the small budget. Even the DVD cover shows a large city landscape in the background but in the actual movie, it's a small Midwest town, which kinda defeats the purpose that Kermit's in this new and dangerous environment that they're aiming for but you don't really get that in the actual movie. Like if you were to even do a prequel to Kermit's life, I would want to see something about Kermit finding his banjo and maybe introduce the family a different concept of making music in the swamp. (And yes, make it a musical!) If it's set in the 50s, you should make it feel like a classic 1950s musical. And I guess somewhere down the line, he meets a celebrity or a actor/actress with a struggling career and this would lead Kermit to understand what Hollywood, movies and showbiz is. And you can have that scene where Kermit goes to the theaters to understand what movies are but here, he brushes it off because he's so focused on making songs instead in his town. So in the end while his musical career becomes a disaster of not what he really desired, it could lead him to instead be a movie star and make millions happy with his kindness to the world in the beginning of The Muppet Movie because of that one friend he made early on inspired him to follow a new dream. And i guess the message is that we all have to start somewhere, even if it isn't the dream you really wanted and that you can find other opportunities instead, and how it's never too late to inspire people. Idk, something like that. (I also wouldn't make the Muppets something nobody knows about, so here, everyone knows frogs and animals talk and they're already living together. So maybe the cameos in the movie could be younger versions of other famous Muppets and where they were before they met Kermit.)
Funny enough, I own the DVD of this, and I did get it from a double pack...well, triple pack. It had this, Muppets From Space, and The Muppets Take Manhattan.
It’d have been smart if the boy (that totally isn’t Jim Henson) was into playing with puppets, he helps Kermit, Kermit accidentally reveals that frogs can talk and scurries away. (Not really) Jim picks up a frog toy and does an imitation of the Kermit’s voice
It took me some time to realize the ending was a stand by me spoof and I absolutely lost it at that lmao. Actually so funny, props on you for that joke LOL
8:41 I genuinely thought that this was real until the end part with the “It was pretty awful just like this movie” It was so funny that I didn’t realize they’d never allow this
I thought you meant Muppet Christmas Carol for a second, but I forgot they did a Christmas TV movie based on It's a Wonderful Life. And in the alternate timeline where Kermit never existed, the Twin Towers are still standing! (This was due to using an old backdrop and not intentional, though.)
The reason why it looks like it was probably rushed was because Disney needed films to be shot at Disney’s mgm studios and probably green lit this one just they can still call the park a working movie studio
If this movie was taking place in 1958, then that Henson cameo makes even less sense than it did before because Jim Henson already had his own puppet TV show during that time called Sam and Friends, and Kermit was in that show.
Your video popped up in my recommended and i clicked it cuz i was looking for something to watch. Really glad that happened cuz you got some funny videos and you're genuinely really entertaining. Can't wait to see what else you make. Subbed and got the bell on.
You're Kermt impression had me double taking. Great series Junko! I've hear your first 10k subs are the hardest and I see you surpassing 100k this year! Just do what you love and well be watching every step of the way!
I consider myself somewhat knowledgable on the Muppets, but l've never even heard of this movie. That's the "direct to video" aspect of it, l suppose. Kermit's friends strike me as not fitting in well with the designs of the other Muppets. Like someone's imitating a Henson designer with less skill. I wouldn't pick them out of a crowd and go "That's a Muppet!"
That "let the frogs go" chant has been echoing in my mind for 20 years 😭That's literally the only thing I remembered about it, this movie is such a fever dream
I was obsessed with this movie as a kid, and I remember literally NOTHING about it other than the scene when they almost dissected one of the frogs. I remember that scene being the most horrifying thing my little child-self had ever seen. I'd forgotten this existed except for that hazy memory, and seeing proof that this is a movie that existed is really bizarre. Great video!
i remember getting this as a kid at some local thrift shop when i was like 7. i remember loving the ever living crap out of it, i kept replaying the bloopers in the credits for some reason? it got to a point where the tape started to fade
This movie was my introduction to the Muppets, so it will hold a special place in my heart. I actually got to talk with Steve Whitmire at a recent convention about this movie. It was so cool.
I feel really fortunate to be old enough to have been around when Jim Henson was alive. I never got to meet him or anything, but I got to see him in interviews and things. I feel kind of bad to hear younger commenters writing that THIS movie was their first Muppet thing they ever saw.
Yeah, this was definitely one of the worst, if not the worst Muppet movie. It just so happened to have been the only non-Sesame Street related Muppet thing I owned as a kid & I was rather disappointed & confused by it even back then. Because I grew up watching reruns of the older Muppet shows & movies on the Disney channel, I knew what a good Muppet content looked like & this didn't look or sound like those movies.
If this is Kermit's origin tale do they explain what happened to his eyes to give him those weird pupils that no other frog has? Or if the thing around his neck is clothing or some weird skin flaps?
As far as I'm concerned, the true Muppets died alongside _Muppets Tonight_ . At least everything before and during that period felt like they were still running on Jim's fumes.
I miss Muppets Tonight so bad, it was the best and most iconic reboot of The Muppet Show ever from the late 90s. The 2015 Muppet show is nowhere near as good as Muppet Tonight but it was still way better than Muppets Now and The Muppets Mayhem

@@StonerWaifu ours was turds from an owl. It was cruelty free, and it was kinda cool pulling out bones and unknown objects. One kid found a tiny mouse skull in one.
Considering how dark the latter half of the movie is, I'd argue that it's a film for no one. Also, as much as I'm a fan of Cree Summer, having her cast as both the dog AND Kermit's mother was just confusing, especially since she basically uses the same voice for both characters.
Weird fact: I've only seen this movie once, the only part i remember is that let the frogs go chant, i remember laying there and seeing this scene and being like "what the fuck is going on?" 💀
Despite how bad the film is looking back, Kermit's Swamp Years will hold a special place in my heart as it was the movie I watched while I was in the hospital recovering from brain surgery when I was a toddler.
kermit telling stories about his childhood way before he became where he is now is honestly interesting, i hope it's just as interesting as this movie, damnit.
Seeing it right now and sadly it’s not really doing it for me. That said I actually like Croaker, Goggles and Blotch (and the subplot of the last two I think it’s mostly okay from what I’ve seen so far), to the point I wouldn’t mind seeing them in new Muppet projects with tighter writing and less boring pacing
