    Something about age of mythology's choice of music is a little mesmerizing in a good way. It's thematically ethnic but played from a modern perspective, and it has this sort of calm jazzy thing going. Fun fact, the name of the heroic bombastic main menu song is "A Cat Named Mittens," and the rest of the songs are similarly given silly names like "Eat Your Potatoes."

    Fine with this being a remake.
    Lots of people have been calling for a sequel, however what I'm always wondering: What would you want from a sequel, that can't be achieved in the remake? For better graphics, new civs and units you wouldn't need a sequel.

      Totally agree that if you just want more content, you don't need a sequel.
      A sequel could act as either as a reboot, or a continuation of the story, with totally different core gameplay.

      New civs are far more likely for a new game than for a remake, unless said remake does extremely well. Also his suggestion of making age-ups come from landmarks is the sort of thing they can do with a new game, but would likely not go down well with such an old and established game. Also a new game can introduce other new mechanics, like unit abilities, that would disrupt a remake.

      @@ArawnOfAnnwn Disagree about the new content being not likely. Have you seen the AoE 2 and 3 Definitive Editions? It's full of new DLC :D It's fairly likely to happen here, too - doesn't really matter if it's a remake or a remaster when it comes to that.
      I agree regarding the shrine stuff - that's much more likely for a sequel. At the same time, reusable god powers are already a massive disruption and if they actually do that, there's clearly little to no inhibitions already.

    There s unlimited storytelling potential. I do hope there is gonna be a sequel or more. There are a ton of stories to be told from greek, norse, atlantean, egiptean mythology, not to speak about mayans, asian and other mythologies that werent even touched

      They created a single campaning including all 3 civ with a powerfull missions development where i really enjoyed so im really hot to see how they gonna add more stories. Even if they will add new civ i really wish to see more links to the original lore. The chinese campaning was the worse event i even have in this game, atlanteans had medicore campaning

      @@williamwilson1870 Well Aoe DE started whit alot of bugs, which took some time to fix.
      And most important part is that the quality of campaings diped in terms of voice over's and music.
      Aoe3 also feals like a downgrade in some big parts like sound and grafics.

      @@stefankatsarov5806 most important part to some. Overall it’s been amazing and lets be honest no one thought we’d have this 20 years ago so regardless of how it was at the start or if some parts aren’t perfect, we have continuous high quality development on a game we love.

    Is this being made by the same development team as the Definitive Editions for the AOE games? If so, I have high hopes for a remake. They've done a good job modernizing the other games and adding new content for them that feels fresh and also similar to what came before. Plus I'm fairly certain a lot of old Ensemble employees still work there.

      Nothing has been confirmed yet. I would assume so though.
      Then again, remakes do have some different implications and carry risks that the remasters didn't. We'll see!

    That sounds definitely interesting. Although such improvements can also backfire as we saw the "improvements" on Warcraft 3 e.g. I'll definitely stay tuned to see if they do AoM good or dirty.

      AoE2 DE is a remake - and it plays and feels pretty much identical to the old aoe2. I trust them.

      @@kurrwa yeah, Reforged had some irrational deadlines and multiple instances of rotation by the staff.
      All 3 AoE Definitive Editions delivered, there's a really good presedent from FE 🫡

    2:33 yes but aom is filled with these asymetric design philosophies. It doesn't make then unfair because there is a larger picture to it. For instance, norse factions don't have to use their villagers to build which equates to more resources and they can build on the front more conveniently. This is absolutely a big advantage over other civs but it doesn't make them unfair. I personally aom civs being so different from each other. It feels a lot more interesting to me than AOE series.

      Thanks, it's something I once prototyped along with purchaseable/reusable god powers. It can definitely work, just a matter of design direction.

    I honestly can't wait to finally play Retold! Loved all the Definitive Editions of Age of Empires (I'm currently playing AoEII DE), and can only imagine how amazing Retold will look and play too!

      It will be very hard to accomplish this, but sounds like they are trying. Atm I have no confidence that it will feel like OG AOM. So, the only option forward imo is to make this superior.

    Something that bothered me is the attack move. Sometimes, units didn’t start attacking until they move to my attack point. Sometimes, they go wild on walls. They had to fix that as well as giving a mechanic to capture the walls or smart attack the gate section.

    this is kinda interesting, original aoe 3 used a modified version of the aom, but now mythology is gonna use an aoe 3 engine, I find that kinda cool
    also I hope that they will keep the original voice lines (at least sound similar) without the "acuracy" of the voices they did with the AoE 3 The WarChiefs units voice line

    The Atlantians only required a third of the workers, but they cost 3 pops and were more expensive to build. I always felt the powers were balanced in that you only had a limited use, even with no cost. But, the non Titan ones should allow for multiple uses. I'm more interested in the remake, as the game was already remastered once and there are areas that need improvement. But I guess what I really want is AoM 2. Most likely not happening, I know, but I can dream.

      I'm aware that Atlantean vills are "balanced" in terms of pop and cost. My point is more about the difficulty of controlling these tanky, near automated workers (there are no drop off sites to refresh). It's far too easy. I can actively chat during the Atlantean Archaic Age, there's basically nothing to do.

      @@NakamuraRTS well, non gaia atty also has weak economy to begin with and has a putrid late game to balance the easier macro. The value of citizens also means ur less likely to have walls up without losing alota gathering time and more difficult to protect towers without wall segments

    What I hope is that they aren't too shy about giving what is specific of AoM weight in the gameplay,
    I hope the myth units will have a good spot in the meta, I hope it's not going to be just the unit you get for free when you pass an age and that we will be able to see more than just colossi, and fire and ice giants..

    I had a mod where god powers where use with faith. I don’t know if they would do this kind of things but that could a way to do it.
    On the other hand they are a lot of very good mod I would love to see upgrade to that new game.
    Finally thx to give us news on this new game. It will be a buy from me I think because Age of Mythology was one of my three first rts with war3 and age of empire 3

      I could see them using favor as the cost, but imo it isn't enough, and honestly would take away from myth unit usage too much. There are often cases where competitive matches are played with minimal myth unit use, and we really don't need god powers to take away from that even more. Probably will make a vid on this topic.

    It would be interesting if you could gain recharges of god powers by spending resources. So maybe you can build shrines to minor gods that gradually get more expensive and they give you recharges.

    I had an idea for restoring god powers by paying a favor cost, that increases in price every time you pay for a charge. Furthermore god powers should be on cooldown when aging up, so opponents have time to prepare. Lastly, paying to restore a god power places it on a cooldown, before it is charged.
    With those 3 changes to god powers, the developers are able to change favor cost, recharge time and power level to balance god powers.

    This is the best RTS ever made. Period. If they don’t do anything to screw up the gameplay, I will be buying and playing this a lot. The game is so perfect that odds of a sequel being as good or better are low. They should not tweak anything from the original releases. It was perfect by the end. You are wrong about the god powers.

    I love that they putting so much effort in redo this game.
    It's an amazing opportunity to do justice to mythology.
    They need to do so many changes for making this game competitive but always keep the essence, of course.
    In my honest opinion, I don't care if the mechanics of the game are all new. If they change the things that don't work and replace them to make a good RTS AoM, I'm sold.
    The music is one of my favorite things about AoM, if they can polish the sound of it, it would be amazing.

    btw did you link to the correct podcast?
    The one in the description is from last October. They do talk about AoM, but no confirmation of Remake or the used engine. They talk about engine maintenance, but nothing I would see as a confirmation of anything.
    And most you talk about is your assumptions and opinions, which is not based on any official annoucenment.
    Seems like either a mix up or a missunderstanding.

      This is a podcast that has gone under the radar - very few have been aware of it.
      Adam Isgreen has confirmed that they are remaking the game in AoE 3 (and everything else I pointed out) - it's a very rapid fire interview and he doesn't go into detail, but he's throwing around MASSIVE pieces of information so it's kind of sad that they didn't discuss it any more.
      And yes of course I do add my thoughts, concerns and ideas, that's the whole point of making videos on my own channel.

    I'm so confused. Unless I'm missing something, the podcast has been out since last october? (so basically the announcement date). Yet it's treated like a new info, and even I don't remember seeing these infos anywhere. I just don't understand what happened xD

      I feel like the podcast kind of went under the radar because the Age community saw the release of the console versions, AoE 4's anniversary and the AoE 2 DLC as more important.

    Honestly I can't wait. I'm a big AoE2 nerd and want to pick up AoM when it gets remade.
    That said, I think everyone should be happy about the remake decision - it drastically increases the likelihood that the game will be supported going forward.

      Well I agree there is a chance of this being a superior choice to a normal remaster, there is an equal chance of the game feel being not as good.
      Remakes can be extremely hit or miss, we just have to see where it lands.
      Imo seeing as a major motivation of using AoE 3's engine is maintenance savings, we should be vary of the decision makers' (un)willingness to fully invest into elevating AoM itself into a Definitive Edition.

      @@NakamuraRTS I understand the concern but from a business perspective this makes future upkeep more likely which I think is a net good even if there is a risk of losing a bit of the soul of the game. That said I think the studios handling the old Ensemble Stuidos IPs have shows themselves to understand the importance of keeping the souls of the games so far. Especially after the problems with AoE4 where pretty Much every modernization-feayure was seen as a bad thing from a community standpoint.

      There's a lot of risk, and a lot can go wrong/get cut. Hopefully they won't totally squeeze the soul of the game out, and can capture its essence well.

      I'm always afraid of remakes. Just see jow they ruined Resident Evil 4 with that remake they did. And I'm pretty sure AoM will feel weird with the AoE engine, there is some magic on AoM that you cannot replicate when playing other RTS like 0 A.D or the AoE series, so I'm pretty afraid, but let's see.

      @@NakamuraRTS Back when EE and the DLC where released, I read that the devs had a really hard time adding chinese and their god powers to the game, as the codebase for AoM is a big mess. With AoE3DE and the (hopefully) cleanup and moderization done there, its not a bad idea to use that engine. Similar with what Hidden Path did back with AoE2HD, which was ultimately used for AoE2DE.

    I think God powers are by default extremely hard to balance out. They're so many and so diverse and it's proved that only a few are universally useful. You can check many youtubers god power tier list to prove that point.
    Given that. By removing god power finite uses, you're adding one more variable to balance out god powers, that is cool down. Having more variables available to balance is better in my opinion

    3:00 This is what I was hoping to hear. God powers were a lot of fun, but them being so limited, I ended up never using them when they would have made a difference.
    I'm willing to see them nerfed hard if I get to use them more often.

      It can be good - I think the powers don't need that big of a nerf for it to work either. Though things like Forest Fire and Ceasefire sound particularly problematic in a longer match.

    For God Powers, I think a combination of cooldown and Favor could work, and each should be scaled with the strength of the God Power.
    It's good to know that they are going to make some changes to the Chinese Gods and that they are keeping them around. I only hope that they do a good job at it, and that the myth units don't visually look like slightly modified versions of other myth units.
    I personally am fine with them going the remake route, mostly because the AI for Age of mythology was outright terrible, and would break on many custom maps - notably custom naval maps, or maps that were too large. That said, I'm also hoping that they give us Giant and Ludicrous map sizes, especially for the sake of scenario building, and that they implement some of the triggers that modders had made for the original game.
    Overall, as long as the balance is good, the overall quality and feel of it is good, they completely re-write the AI system to work better and add more map/editing options, I'll be happy. I'd also like to see some Mesopotamian civs added in future expansions, as well as the Japanese, Indians and South American gods. One thing they better not change though, is the Arkantos campaign, because that shit is epic! They also better do the OST justice, or in the least, let us switch to the classic OST.

    I am not going to lie, I saw this and my only thought was *Concern*
    What made OG AoM special was its gameplay, and how everything worked together to make Age of Mythology it's own special niche in the genre. And the two campaigns what really sold the game.

    I like all new info. Prob if we get multiuse for gods powers its gonna be weaker then before to balance it. Also interesting if more changes are planed, tbh i dont mind as long there will be mode or sth to let players play new and old way.

      I think they could just add a cool-down timer on Godpowers once you research an endgame tech. As it stands now, if your match goes for an hour or so, there are no godpowers at all for the second half of your match. This would make long matches less boring, and require very little balancing.

    single use god powers were fine to me. I cant imagine doing it with cooldowns so everyone will just wait to have all and then do something. Maybe possibility to use god powers multiple times will require some additional actions etc then maybe this would be an option. For now for me waiting and judging whether its the right moment to ask god for help was the best solution to that

    Looking forward to it.
    The only thing that the game needs is better pathfinding, and to improve the graphics(only to be considered modern i guess). The rest in my opinion is ice on the cake

    The OG AOM engine already seemed like a AOE 2.5 with the wall and gate placement of age 3 but the unit power cooldown of age 2, by transitioning the whole game to the AOE 3 DE engine I hope the devs can implement some changes like AOE 3 style naval battles, units powers and pathing, maybe even the natives mechanic as minor pantheons you can ally with granting you a human unit, a myth unit and some unique techs

    Hey, sorry if this is a dumb question; but didn't AoM already get a remaster with "Extended Edition", or is that what would be considered a remaster? If it's not, then I think I'm confused as to what a remaster is, and by extension what a remake is. Some clarification would help. Thanks, sorry if that's a stupid question

      Not a dumb question, in fact I think I didn't clarify this enough and now am planning a follow-up video. But short version:
      Re-release: you take an existing game, slightly improve it, and make sure it runs on modern hardware. The Extended Edition fits here on the scale.
      Remaster: you take an existing game, massively improve it, remake the assets to look and sound more modern and extend the feature set. The Definitive Editions of the other AoE games fit this.
      Remake: you literally re-create a game in a different engine. In this case, AoM would be rebuilt from scratch in AoE 3's engine, which is fairly similar, but definitely requires tweaks.

    With regards to the god powers rework, how about this: only slight nerf, while making subsequent use of each power cost progressively more resources, on a progressively longer cooldown.
    E.g.: Pestilence cost 500 × (times used) total res and cooldown of 4min × (times used), but something like Nidhogg be 4000 x (times used) and 12min × (times used)

    Hopefully a remake means that several things can happen:
    -Rebalancing of god powers so that Atlanteans aren't the only faction with multi-charge powers
    -Redesigning of some problem missions in the campaigns (The Titans campaign needs some special attention, you don't get to make Atlantean myth units until mission 3, and can't even age up and choose your gods (as Atlantean) for pretty much the entire thing.
    -Improvements to pathfinding and attacking logic (when ordered to attack a moving enemy units will move to where the enemy was when ordered rather than following the enemy, patrolling and attack move don't work at all since it doesn't prioritize units, just what's closest)

      For point number 2, that’s not a problem. The Atlanteans can’t train myth units in Mission 1 as the Greek Gods have abandoned the Atlanteans. You would have to have favor from the Gods to train Myth Units. You can’t gain favor from the Gods if you don’t have any Gods to Worship (Prayer, Monuments, Gardens, Battles, and Colonialism.)
      By Mission 2 you just started worshiping the Greek Titans, so it makes sense you can’t train any myth units (Based on how Atlanteans gain favor through having more than One Town Center.) from the overgrown and abandoned Temples to the Titans. Not to mention you just found these new Gods to worship, but you wouldn’t know how to gain their favor outside of rebuilding temples and being gifted with Myth Units.
      By Mission Three, all you’re doing is taking Plenty Vaults which produce Food, Gold, Wood, and Favor from the Gods. As such, the Atlantean Army now has access to enough favor to start training Myth Units. Not to mention the Atlanteans spent who knows how much in-game time learning how to build the Titan’s Temples after rebuilding the Overgrown Temples.

    A remake suits me just fine. As for animations have the cyclopes just grab with their left hands, first switching club to left hand and then grab with right takes too long. And the elephants should only be slapped by their mahouds/riders during "running"(when forming up ranks), if AoE3 DE running animations are utilised.

      The way you should think about it is that the AoE 3 engine is a vehicle for feature support. They have no need to take gameplay features from AoE 3 into AoM, but will rather recreate AoM's features with the AoE 3 tooling.
      What is concerning is that things could be forgotten or cut. Such as the formation features that you mention.
      And yes the Cyclops anim is far too long. AoM has a huge amount of extra slow anims that they should really make more snappy. Turma or Siege Tower attacks feel especially slow for example.

    My take: 3x lightning. Each of which does equal to half of the damage of the 1x lightning power, so now we have 1.5x lightning power. Each of the 3 kills any animal. I would really like to see this in order to snipe the rhino on savannah for some advantage.

    It's been 20 years since I first played this game. I bought it again a couple of years ago on steam and have played quite a lot in the last months. It's part of my life story, something a dedicated thousands of hours on different occasions, through multiple decades. That said, I wonder if this news hasn't come too late for me. At this point of my life, however fond the memories are, Can't help but feel like I'm too old for this, or that I should use my time for something else. These devs really took too long.

    AoE II HD's (2013) "The Forgotten" campaigns and civilisations were also kind of bad, not as bad as the "Tale of the Dragon" but close, and in the DE all of it got rewoked for much better (two totally different campaigns even), to the point where only "Bari" remains the same garbage - therefore I am confident that the Chinese here will get the same treatment.
    I would love the powers on a cooldown for the non-Ranked games, as a lot of players who play the campaigns and such have the "too good to use syndrome" and if someone wanted to play with the rechargable powers in the PvP as well - there could be like a setting in the lobby for that (DEs have that).

    Very much money and time went into the Remaster of Age of Empire de. However, in the launch it did not convince the people due to pathfinding and ai issues which were somewhat dealt one year later.
    So, if the use of the already finished Age 3 engine lets them develope Age of Mythology cheaper and faster-they could have more time to implement much needed depth into it.

    Other than the tier 4 god powers most others are reasonable. Just have God Powers have a cooldown and a favor cost per use. I think that balance most other than the Mythic Age powers. Though some of those aren't OP either.

      I will cover all the GPs in a separate video for this discussion. But this is not the case at all. Imagine a team game with recurring Ceasefires from multiple players. It's going to be a treaty match and likely an all Zeus/Poseidon match could be permanently Ceasefired.
      Likewise, repeated use of Forest Fire could starve a player of wood completely.
      Great Hunt can't be used once you consume all huntables.
      Redesigns will be required, there is no way around it if they actually go for this.
      As for Favor costs, that would hugely devalue myth units and create imbalances between the different civs due to the disparity between favor gathering methods. I'd say every resource type needs to be involved.

    I was sort off dissapointed when I heard about that. I was specting some kind of rpg elements in heroes since the game relies on heroes and myth units, i was expecting the relics to become something like items that can improve your heroes. Not a copy of warcraft 3 but indeed an inspiration.
    Anyway, hope the game goes well.

    Awesome! Super excited to see what they do with it! I loved aom back in the day altho I remember thinking it wasn't as balanced as say aoe2 (isis and Loki seemed op to me, but maybe I was just bad 😅.. the Asian gods were buggy af tho). Overall I understand why they'd choose a remake over a remaster as I think the game had more issues than some other titles making it less popular. I hope they do well!

      There's not much to be improved within trigger scope. Because you can actually make your own triggers that extend features that the original triggers can't (given that you have some programming basis). Also custom triggers work even without having the triggers on the client. They already nailed it in that regard. Let's hope they keep it that way

    Nerfing God powers would be a terrible idea. Using your ultimate power and watching your enemies base crumble is a huge part of what makes this game fun.
    Or using your economy boost at just the right time and pulling ahead in the eco game.
    Hope they tread very carefully with that.

      This is the Extended Edition (with some visual mods). So yeah you can play this already, but it's not the Retold game being discussed - that one is still in early development.

    Im glad they're bringing china back in order to fix them up. In the DLC they just felt like a tacked on mod without the same vibe as the main game. Hopefully they'll fix that and make them feel more integrated and intentional in the design this time

    The other definitive editions are also remakes since they were remade from they made from the ground up, with new engines and everything. A Remaster is more akin to increasing screen resolution, fixing bugs, and sharpening textures, much like the AoE2 HD Edition, Resident Evil 4 HD Edition (2014) and Dark Souls Remaster.

    -I think Atlantean citizens should cost 85f/15w, take up two population slots, and work almost twice as fast as the other workers.
    -God powers should be usable for free only the first time, then they go on cooldown, and a shrine must be built for them to be used again, although for powers that are too destructive you should necessarily have to build a shrine to be able to use that power the first time (you might even get a message to all players saying "Player X has built God Y's shrine"). You could also save up to 2 charges of each power, so you don't have to be forced to use them as soon as possible. For all these reasons some powers can be nerfed a bit.
    -It also occurs to me that the powers of the gods can work in a similar way to the nukes in Starcraft 2 (Replacing the Ghost with a Hero, and the Ghost academy with a sanctuary, and the powers can be "bought" at the sanctuary), but this is just an idea that should be elaborated better.
    -[Optional] In age III you could build the shrine of the god you didn't choose in age II, so you can research their technologies and train their mythic unit, but this doesn't give you access to their god power. The same could happen in age IV with the god you didn't choose in age III.
    -The gods that are less chosen should also be improved or changed as necessary.
    -Chinese civilization should be reworked, changed, improved or something like that.
    -Adding expansions or DLC with new civilizations would be great.

      @@MarshallTheArtist I think the Chinese civilization should be more unique, and better reflect their culture, for example the Chinese can generate favor by constructing buildings and producing units (Like the experience in AOE3), and they can train some units in batches or in groups that combine two types of units like in AOE3. All this reflects the Chinese culture of work, so that for example, if the Norse generate favor by fighting, the Chinese generate favor by producing. They can also build some Gardens to generate favor, but less. Immortals can be a bit more expensive but they revive on death, with a cooldown. I'm not sure which is the best path, but I know that the Chinese also need a lot of rebalancing work and better ideas.

    On one hand I was hoping it would be a remaster, since I like the game so sooo much and I am afraid they will change it too much and make it worse. That's why a remaster seemed to me like the safer option.
    On the other hand, remaking it on a better engine would open up new possibilities. For example I very much like the Community Plaza ceremonies mechanic they have in AoE 3, so it would be really nice if they added the Aztec civilization in AoM Retold with those ceremonies in place :)

    So I'm happy to hear about the remake maybe this will draw in new players I have been playing this game since I was a teenager sadly getting off to the picture of prostephone I feel Terrible know that she the keeper of the dead now also I would love the idea of an engineer unit as in if you get it in an enemy building that building is now yours to do what you will like making units of that facton

    I hate the fights in AOE. Mythology is so unique in terms of mechanics and fights. I hate how not crowded fights in AOE are. I know many AOM pvp players who play AOE once a month maybe which shows how different they are . I wish it was a remaster too

    I would personally love it if they completely delete the Chinese campaign and give it another go with a new and appealing story. Up until the Atlantean campaign, the story was fantastic.
