I was expecting a condescending video and have been postponing this one for a while. But to my surprise it's quite on point and refreshing. I think of science fiction a bit higher though :). Enjoyed the video, thanks!
That whole "own voice" movement in the trad publishing world actually sort of ate itself after so many literary agents were strongly vocal about only seeking marginalized LQBTQ, bipoc, etc authors. Basically, a few young authors who wrote a story about say a trans main character ended up having to come out of the closet just in order to query a project because otherwise some dream agent wouldn't take a look at their manuscript.
I love you because you are litterally always saying exactly what iv always wanted to hear. Gotta hit up your office hours sometime. Thank you Captain Ian.
Hey there, Ian. I just took a look at your Murakami list, and off the top of my head I know he mentions John Updike's The Centaur as well as Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain in Norwegian Wood (didn't see them on the list, so I thought I'd share). Thank for leading the revolution, brother!
Soon as someone says how to properly make art, you tell that person to suck shit. Ain’t no rules to this here. But also, learn all the rules so you can break em. Fuck it all, but also, respect the legacy.
That is one snazzy t-shirt 🤩 I want to buy one for my current self and also one for my 11-year-old self and maybe also one for each of my sorority sisters 💫
Yes 1Q84 has been great. Some of his topics are a bit touchy but it’s in there in a way that doesn’t distract from the story and makes it so easy to read. I’ve been flying through it. I started handwriting my own first draft last week and it is soooooo rough I’m almost disappointed but I’m trying to realize that by the time I finish writing the first draft I will already be a different writer and can go back and look at it with fresh eyes hopefully and add more meaning.
great video as always, I'm writing a novel and im at 8k words. I'm Italian so my plan is to translate the book after finishing it, using a professional obviously. I think my story and my stile are great, so we will see if im the next J.K.R. . In the meanwhile, I need to write at least another 72k words. So wish me good luck. There are three big rules of writing, unfortunately nobody knows them.
What do you think of Tim O'Brien? Another author who writes from first-person perspective and about his own experience during the Vietnam War, yet, I find his The Things They Carried one of the best works of the modern literature.
I think the key to writing a great science fiction book in this bleak environment is to tap into the feeling of wonder you get from reading 'Godel, Escher, Bach' and then applying that feeling to an oddly specific analogy for one of the major events most people will experience in life. 😂🎉❤
with the same time invested in a discipline and the same effort, a person is superior of another. In sport can be genetic or understanding , ability to collect more skills than other etc.. In writing can be write without effort, write great story without too much planning, find a way to express thoughts in a way that touch the reader.

I dig how your shit all spot on for our time. Enjoy your life, man! Fulla twists and changes in perception.

If you want to break rules create something original and new instead of making clueless rubbish rules are discipline and discipline is key to success
Thanks for the insight, Ian. Love your vids.
Good wisdom and insight. Thanks again for your passion.

Quali sono queste tre regole, amico?
@@giovanniscagliusi9006 "sfortunatamente nessuno le conosce", è un battuta :)
Rule 1 is don't stop writing.
Where did all the other shoes to put ourselves to walk a mile in go?
Wow. This is the message I needed today. I’m on the cusp of a slump.
I recommend Float Therapy over psychedelics. Safer and cheaper.

Dude.
i beg you someone tell me what is "talent"?
Game recognize Game. It's a tautology. All famous people in history end up knowing other famous people.
