  • I just finished building my first strip-built sea kayak. It is Nick Schade's microBootlegger Sport design from Guillemot Kayaks. Before this, I have only done a few small woodworking projects, but Nick's videos were really inspiring. I got a lot of my material from Chesapeake Light Craft. Four days after finishing the boat, I took it to their Big Little Boat Festival.
A big thank you to Cathy for letting me take over the basement, front porch, and the dining room table! She helped me move it around, cut strips and served as the project's videographer and launch-day safety officer ;-) Thanks also to our daughters, Grace and Morgan, for their production assistance.
    Nick's playlist was very helpful.

Beautiful boat and job. With that carbon inside must be about bulletproof too for rum running, wow!

Hi Chad, could you let me know how you did your recessed deck fittings?

Sorry for the slow response, @chrisgrainger4792. I read about Moroske deck fittings and then found a good video of a guy doing it and took a chance that they would work and they did. I documented my steps with photos from my build. They have worked great, able to fit both bungee and perimeter line in the same fitting. I use the perimeter line running through these with much of my weight so they are strong. Anyway, here's the guide I created. I give credit to the folks who showed me how in the guide. docs.google.com/document/d/1bUtL72IaEKQMHTgr7hll1ensANbk2sORYuHdbHIID3A/edit?usp=sharing

I put wood "hooks" on the bottom of the hatch and 2 padeyes on each side of the hull below. I put a loop of bungee cord on both sides that pull the hooks down. I've had waves wash over the deck and it's dry afterwards.
