  • Paul Verlaine Tears in My Heart by Paul Verlaine - Analysis Explanation and Reading - Tears in My Heart by Paul Verlaine
    Tears fall in my heart
    Rain falls on the town;
    what is this numb hurt
    that enters my heart?
    Ah, the soft sound of rain
    on roofs, on the ground!
    To a dulled heart they came,
    ah, the song of the rain!
    Tears without reason
    in the disheartened heart.
    What? no trace of treason?
    This grief's without reason.
    It's far the worst pain
    to never know why
    without love or disdain
    my heart has such pain!

    By the way it was quite close to the original poem which title can be translated from French (non poetically) as It's raining in my heart.

    Hi Alex. Thanks for the video. What a good idea to analyse poetry. It would be good if you go through the difficult words rapidly first and then give your analysis. Your "students" have different levels so this is a superb initiativ. You could alså do short english og ammerican poetry.

    I'd perhaps use a more literal translation, rather than this "ryhymed" version. For example, a good translation for the beginning would be, "It's crying in my heart, like it's raining in the city." You could maybe just take the original text and put it into a translator to get more of the author's meaning.
